According to the brochure, the church of St. Nikolai was first erected as a small chapel near the harbour dedicated to St. Nikolai, the patron of sailors and travellers. In the 13th and 14th century, it was developed into a hall church with a steeple. The 'Great Fire' of Hamburg destroyed the church in 1842. Donations of Hamburg's citizens facilitated the construction of a new church from 1846 to 1874 by the design of the British architect George Gilbert Scott. When the neo-gothic construction was completed in 1874, its 483 feet church steeple was the highest in the world. During the air raids in the Second World War, the steeple served as a point of orientation for the Allied bomber pilots. The church burned down in the Operation Gomorrah firestorm in July 1943.

In the past must have been an amazing church.

It is very sad to note that also in this case not much has survived to the present day.

There is an empty space, a sort of square, without roofing, exposed to the elements
