The Great Flood according to the Maya
The most solid tradition is found among the Maya, particularly in the Popol Vuh, or Book of Council (of the Chiefs). This is the sacred book of the Maya-Quiché and serves as a heroic and historical collection as well as a record of the legends of this people. In the book, the gods are mentioned with their various names, and it explains how they created the heavens, the animals, and humanity. The men multiplied but lacked soul or intellect; they did not remember their creator and crawled on all fours. Failing to meet the desires of the gods, these men fell into disgrace, and the gods decided to destroy them through a flood caused by the heart of the sky.
