yo yo yo the AMRC METALHEADz came to our hood this week to answer some questions.
H8ZiNE feels the terror already so here we go ->
<Lord_h8r>
1.- hello AMRC, tell us, how long have you been releasing in the scene?
<AMRC>
A: AMRC was officially 5 years old in May 2004
<Lord_h8r>
2.- What genres do you like to concentrate on?
<AMRC>
A: We are a group that focuses on releasing most subgenres within the metal/hard rock genres,
but also sometimes release some industrial/fusion/gothic/ambient, etc.
Metal and Hard Rock are definitely our main genres though with some occasional exceptions.
<Lord_h8r>
3.- do you think that the number of people listening to your music are growing or decreasing
<AMRC>
A: I'm not sure really, I try to stay within the scene and not deviate too much in terms
of going to other IRC networks or finding out who has our releases outside of the scene.
I think that there's a real problem with security in the scene and our releases getting
into the wrong hands. I think that we're fairly respected for what we do and the metal/rock
fans in the scene definitely like us and what we do. We don't focus as much on the mainstream
artists that you would normally hear on the radio or whatever, there's nothing wrong with
those groups at all, but it's just not what we release really or listen to much for the most part.
There are some groups like FNT/ESC/PMS that focus more on those type of artists and do a great
job with it but we prefer to do our own thing. I'd like to think our releases expose more people
to some of the bands we like and increase their fanbase.
<Lord_h8r>
4.- What do you think about those new groups trying to fool people with fakes n shit?
<AMRC>
A: I think it's really lame, I don't want to sound like a prick... but there are way too many new
groups forming all the time and I don't know that their security standards are that high.
I would really like to see less new groups in the scene and things to become more difficult
for getting into the scene. The last thing we need is more lamers and insecure people, I'm not
saying that everyone who's new is insecure but it definitely leaves the possibility of people
who work for record labels or even government agents to infiltrate the scene much easier.
I think that groups should try to have quality control, and if they don't have a valid source,
don't release the shit they have... it's better not to release something than to release a
fake/bad version of it, I've learned that over time. We had some rips that people thought were
questionable so I have required certain questionable releases/rippers to produce scans if there
is any doubt now, it's better safe than sorry.
<Lord_h8r>
5.- What's motivating your group to keep releasing music for free?
<AMRC>
A: Well, all of us in AMRC are into metal music and it's as much about sharing with each other as
it is the scene. To us, this is a more secure means of getting what we need than using some P2P
network or other methods like that. I really hate the fact that the RIAA and government is so against
trading mp3. I can understand their position about protecting the copyright of the artists and there
are some people who just download EVERYTHING and NEVER buy cds, you know the whole "Why pay when we
can get it free" attitude, that's what really ruins it for everyone else. We're not making a profit
out of this either, so why should we be arrested for it, I dunno... I don't really see it much
different than listening to the radio, especially if people buy CDs often. Without the scene and
mp3 trading, there are SO many bands I never would have found out about that I love now.
The scene has actually caused me to buy MORE CDs than I would have instead of less, so I think their
whole rant about losing millions of dollars a year because of us is bullshit. Though I do think if
people are SELLING warez, they should be fucking locked up because it fucks things up for everyone else
and it's just not right to make a profit off other people's work.
<Lord_h8r>
6.- How do you keep yourselves secure, memberwise and sitewise?
<AMRC>
A: Good question... Security is important to us and I think it should be for all of the groups in the
mp3 scene and other scenes as well. It is even more important for the older groups who have a much
higher probability of being targeted in any future busts. Personally, I never connect to sites using
my home IP, I use proxies and other methods of hiding my IP, also I encourage our members to stay off
Efnet completely if possible and if they go on to ALWAYS use IRC bncs.. with no exceptions.
I also encrypt my site lists, ftp programs, and other scene related materials so that they will be
much harder to find if an unwated party obtained access to my computer through hacking/arrest/other means.
Last, but definitely not least, AMRC does not use Efnet/Linknet or any other public server for
communication, we use a private SSL enabled server which requires authentication.
In terms of getting members... We are basically closed now, luckily we are in a position to have a stable
and solid foundation and do not need to recruit more members to stay fairly active. We could of course
get bigger and bigger/release more and more, etc.. but where do you draw the line between security and
the need to be a bigger/more "elite" group if you will? I think we are fine the way we are for the most part.
With that thought in mind, it's very difficult to get into AMRC now, nearly impossible, normally we only
will take someone if one of the current members has known them for some time or they are referred by another
group we trust such as RNS/CHR, or other oldschool groups.
<Lord_h8r>
7.- Wich groups do you think are keeping the scene alive?
<AMRC>
A: That's hard to say, I think there are definitely bigger groups in all genres that keep things active
and interesting but there are also some smaller groups that contribute to the scene as well. I don't
think you can single out any one group and say that is what's keeping the scene alive but there are
definitely some that contribute more than others. For my personal tastes/listening preferences,
I like AMRC/PMS/FNT/QTXMP3/BERC/ViC/cnmc and other groups that tend to gravitate toward metal and
hard rock releases. ESC also does some cool metal promos sometimes. RNS/CHR/XXL/BPM/TWCMP3 are among
the other oldschool groups I have a lot of respect for though I don't listen to their releases much.
There are more groups too but these are just some of the main ones...
I think there are a lot of groups that keep things active and some aren't doing so much these days like
they used to.. I guess it's just the way the cycle goes, just like life, some things are born and
others die. If AMRC was to die today, would someone take our place over time... probably.. but it
wouldn't be exactly the same I think ;)
I dunno, I guess over time, you respect the groups more and more that survive and stay together
for a long time and keep doing a great job with things...
<Lord_h8r>
8.- Wich groups should be SCENE BANNED because of the shitty rips?
<AMRC>
A: Well, I don't know if I'm the best guy to ask this question too but mainly the groups that are
accused/caught all the time of putting out fake releases or releases which don't meet the quality
standards expected of the mp3 scene. I don't mean a group that has 4 or 5 bad releases, but a group
that does it on a regular basis and doesn't fix their mistakes/learn from them.
The groups who constantly release dupes should be banned to... at least until they can find some
sort of dupechecking mechanism so that they aren't constantly releasing dupe after dupe. I've seen
groups release like 30-40 dupes in a 2-3 day period, that's just fucking horrible...
Also I think that any siteop or person reading this watch out for a user named m8 or T8 in their
sites or site channels. This is a known seller who has threatened to narq RNS and also sites that
I staff on. People like this are a security threat to all of us and they need to get the fuck off
sites and away from them. Rumors are that this person is known as "Big Mike", a DJ from NYC...
keep him away from your sites. Last time I knew, he was using optonline.net as his provider and
had an IP mask of 67.86.68.*, he was in the group SWE at the time, so it's not sure whether he
bought the slot from them or they were not aware of his actions, nothing is for certain.
I definitely think sites should be aware of such things though.
<Lord_h8r>
9.- Wanna send greetz/hate to any grp/friend in special?
<AMRC>
A: Greets go to all my friends and the siteops who have supported AMRC and believed in us over the
years and now, they know who they are so I won't name them all, but they definitely make things in
the scene a lot cooler for me! In terms of groups, I guess I really should greet AMRCMPG, ZzZz,
CHR, and AMNMP3 because I'm also in those groups and they deserve to be mentioned.
Oh, and as far as hate, All the siteops who have dropped AMRC/AMRCMPG or told us we were shit/not
worth their sites... they can fuck off
<Lord_h8r>
10.- Do you think this mp3 zine will make it and survive? Wanna suggest any question, section, whatever?
<AMRC>
A: I think that if you make the magazine interesting and most of all secure then it could be really cool,
I know sometimes it's interesting to know what other groups are thinking, so I like the interviews like
this a lot. Maybe if a group does a really nice job in a week, you could mention them and also mention
any big/good releases that you think people should check out! If you keep it interesting for all of us,
then I'm sure it can last!
<Lord_h8r>
11.- Define scene friendship, eleet, otto
<AMRC>
A: Well, I have a lot of friends in the scene. In some ways, it's like making friends with someone on
an airplane or at a resort somewhere far away from home. You talk to a lot of them on a daily basis
and get to know the person that they let you see, but is that really who they are? It's the Internet
in general, it's hard to tell if someone is sincere or not or if they're just using you in order to
get what they want...
There are a lot of guys in the scene that I talk to quite often and have a lot of respect for that
help me out with certain things on a regular basis and are just fun to talk to, I guess if you can
find scene friends that are willing to help you out when you need it, that's about as good as it gets.
I think some people are too much into their status though to help out their friends, I know siteops
who have talked with people/been scene friends for 4-5 years and still won't add them on their sites.
To me, that's just a really lame way to be, to care more about status and traders than people who are
there for you and help you out with things. I'm not saying that every siteop should add a zillion
friends to their site...
Friends should however take priority over status/eliteness/traders/rank, etcetc... but what do I know?
Eliteness to me is when someone thinks they're a lot better than other people and treat them like
shit/act like they can never do anything wrong or are perfect. There is NOBODY in the scene that is
perfect or even close to it and NO groups that are even though some think they are. It is tempting to
sometimes be like that with people but I try to be nice with most people when possible unless they
really just annoy me or piss me off in some way.
There are definitely people who are like that though and have the tendency to be pricks to groups
they don't like or know... I'm not going to name any names but there are definitely siteops and people
who are like that with others and sometimes it kind of pisses me off... it even gets directed
at AMRC sometimes.
As far as autotrading, I'm sure a lot more people do it than we know about, and it makes things less
interesting and fun for others. It's great for the sites because they get all the releases really
fast and shit and it's even good for the affils on those sites, but it's bad for morale and it takes
all the effort out of things which makes it kinda lame IMO.
Half of the fun of trading is talking shit to others when you win and stuff like that... when you
auto it's just cheating and no effort or skill is required, it would be like playing basketball
on 10 foot stilts where nobody else had a chance to guard you... just lame
Comments: What a wonderful interview, AMRC have some interesting points of view about security and
mp3 scene in general. Learn from that fags, a good group is not only releases or how
many sites they have. FUA SUT TS4L etc etc etc... if you ever read this, think about it
and disband, you have no chances of competition against REAL groups, please DIE and go
back to your kazaa trading, we dont want you here (well some of us yes, because we
need to get some fun nuking your crap). Thanks AMRC for your time, and keep it up m8's.
