1. Quick Presentation Skills Tip

ADAPTERS by Tom Antion
More and more people are using sound from their laptop as part of
their presentation. It is a really good idea to have an adapter
set with you because you just can't depend on A/V setups in many
places to have what you need.
Sure most hotels with an A/V department can usually handle your
needs, but what about the church, community center or chamber of
commerce meeting center? You don't want to be stuck.
This quick tip section can't really tell you all the adapters and
cords you need, but here's a short list and bare minimum.
Male Stereo Miniplug is usually what plugs into your laptop.
You might have to convert to:
1/4 inch male mono
Canon male or female
RCA male or female
If you don't have a clue what I'm talking about, then you may not
be competent to save yourself when no one is around to help. Make
a trip down to Radio Shack and take a copy of this article and
have them put you together a small array of adapters so you'll be
covered when the time comes.

2. Advanced Presentation Skills Article

A POWERFUL PRESENTATION DESERVES A POWERFUL INTRODUCTION
by Michael Hart
Whether you are speaking to inspire, educate, or motivate, you
have one primary goal, to convince your listeners to agree with
your point of view.
The most effective way to accomplish this goal is to open your
presentation with a strong compelling opening statement. However
before you begin, you must establish your credibility, that is,
to tell your listeners who you are and what you, an authority on
the subject, plan to discuss. In other words, what gives you the
right to be speaking on this particular subject in the first
place?
Your introduction should be the first step in creating this
needed credibility. Unfortunately many presenters have no idea
how to create a compelling, emotionally charged introduction or
why they should introduce themselves at all.
Keep it to one or two paragraphs. For example, lets assume you
are about to address city leaders on the virtues of your firms
new cast iron pipe product line. Perhaps you have vast experience
working with or for municipalities. In your career you have seen
the pit falls associated with making a major purchase with
taxpayers money. Be sure to make this information available to
your audience before you start talking about your firm, its
product merits or any potential solutions.
The members of every group you address have some issue, dilemma,
or concern they must handle. Before you can attempt to help them
solve their problems, they need to know you understand their
situation.
Thus your introduction should include more than your name and who
or what you represent. It should convince your listeners that you
understand what they are going through, and that you understand
their needs.
You will be amazed how much more they will understand and agree
with your presentation, which should be structured to back up the
ideas you expressed in your compelling opening statement. No
amount of whizbang technology and PowerPoint slide shows can make
up for what you fail to declare in your introduction. Take the
time to craft one worthy of your expertise and the presentation
you are about to make.

3. HUMOR TECHNIQUE

BABY PICTURES by Tom Antion
Showing a surprise picture of you as a baby or small child almost
always gets a laugh.
I show a brief segment on my multimedia CD product

audience that I'm going to insert a graphic into a website. The
graphic is a picture of me when I was five years old. As soon as
the graphic shows I get a laugh.
Then to get another bigger laugh I make a comment about my hair
lick which is reminiscent of the character "Alfafa" in the old
"Spanky and Our Gang" series. (Note: if the audience was too
young to remember the series they would not understand that
line.)
A very funny guy Steve Kissell uses his baby picture (I'm not
really sure it is him, but I suspect that it is) in his
professional listings and on his business card. He's telling you
right away that he is going to be fun and funny.
Go through your scrapbooks and pull out all your youthful
pictures and don't limit yourself to baby pictures. There are
probably many cute, funny and embarrassing pictures you could use
in your professional presentations.
When you make fun of yourself, people really fall in love with
you and will be much more likely to laugh at your other funny
lines.

PARALLEL TRACKS by Tom Antion
This is a fairly simple and extremely powerful concept that is
not well known to speakers who must write their own promotional
copy. It has to do with the fact that some potential buyers like
to skim and make quick decisions. Other potential buyers are more
analytical. They read every word.
THE SKIMMERS
To take care of the skimmers you brainstorm a bunch of good
headlines like you normally would for any ad. You pick what you
think is the best one and make it the headline of the sales page.
You take the best of the leftover headlines and make sub headings
out of them. Make sure that jumping from headline to subhead to
subhead tells your story. Make the subheads intriguing and
provocative.
Along the way put "Contact Me Now" links if this is on a website
or your phone number in printed material so the skimmer can make
a decision to get in touch with you and do so (many times before
they get to the bottom of the page).
ANALYTICALS
Just fill in the blanks between subheads with your normal good
copywriting techniques.
