1. Quick Presentation Skills Tip
=====================================================
OLD PROPS by Tom Antion

If you want to grab some attention to make your point, bring
something really old to the presentation that means something to
you (no "take my wife please" jokes here).

It could be a toy your grown child played with as a youngster, or
it could even be one of your toys from when you were a child. A
visit to grandma's attic will probably give you tons of
choices. Have grandma or grandpa tell you stories of how you used
to love that doll, toy truck, etc.

You could even record one or both of them telling the story and
play a segment during your speech. (Get proper releases though
because it would be pretty embarrassing to get sued by your
grandmother for violating her intellectual property rights)
hehehe I can see the court docket now, Nana vs. Little Binky

I have a pair of cufflinks and a tie clip I had as a boy. It
could be just about anything. Use your normal prop handling
techniques and relate the object to a point in your talk and the
fascination with old props will work for you.

2. Advanced Presentation Skills Article
=====================================================
CELEBRATE TODAY! by Tom Antion

One thing audiences appreciate is if you are current. A great way
to be current is to mention something in your speech that is
directly related to the actual day you are speaking.

For instance as I'm writing this article on August 25th I happen
to know that it's "Be Kind to Humankind Week." I could say
something like, "since it's "Be Kind to Humankind Week" I'm going
to be kind to you and cut 15 minutes off my presentation so we
can all get out to the golf course sooner."

I also know that today in 1875 Matthew Webb became the first
person to swim the English Channel. I might say, "If he could
take 22 hours to swim the English Channel, then we ought to be
able to take two hours to swim through this material we have to
cover today."

How do I know all this stuff? Because I have the book "Celebrate
Today" by John Kremer who is one of my favorite authors. His
other book "1001 Ways to Market Your Book" is another one of my
favorites.

Another book that I really love is "Witty Words" by Eileen Mason.
You may have to search for it on used book searches, but it's
definitely worth it.

In "Witty Words" I found out that on this day in 1819 Allan
Pinkerton was born. He was the gentleman that founded the famous
Pinkerton Detective Agency. So today is detective's day. Eileen
did a good job of throwing in other background information like
the fact that France's famed Surete, founded in 1812, was
entirely staffed by ex-convicts. I would bring this up in a
speech and say,"It's kind of like airport security" which I can
assure you would get a big laugh.

Other ways of being current are to find things in the newspaper
from the day you are speaking and relate them to your talk. It's
pretty much guaranteed if you practice at this, that you'll be
able to find something in the paper that relates to your talk.

Note: John Kremer is also the Editor-in-Chief of Book Marketing

3. HUMOR TECHNIQUE
=====================================================
RECORD EM by Tom Antion

In the quick tip above I mentioned recording your grandmother and
playing the recording during your presentation. Let's expand on
that a little and see how that can work for many of your
presentations.

How much do you think the crowd would love it if you did an
interview with the CEO and fed him or her funny lines to use as
answers? The same would hold true for anybody you record who was
well known to the group and generally liked by them.

The opposite of that would work too if you made up a recording of
you interviewing the "supposed" CEO of company that competes with
the one you are talking to. In this case you would use dumb
answers to make the fake CEO look stupid. Make sure it's really
obvious that it's a spoof because I'm not taking the
responsibility if the other CEO hear's about it and sues you.

You could do the same on video and it would be even funnier. I
saw a guy one time asking dumb questions to audience members
before his speech and recording the answers on video. The boss
had told the participants that the speaker wanted to interview
them so they should give him good answers to his questions. The
entire thing was a set up and the people being interviewed didn't
know it was a joke. They attempted to give serious answers to the
ridiculous questions. The recordings were played back at the
event and it brought down the house.

4. SPEAKER MARKETING TIP
=====================================================
VEHICLE MARKETING by Tom Antion

Drive by any small strip shopping center and you're likely to see
a van with a big ad on the side for one of the stores in the
center. Vehicle marketing, although not a new concept, seems to
be gaining a resurgence.

I recently got a solicitation from someone who wanted $500.00 for
a bumper sticker sized ad on a vehicle that was going to tour the
country to promote them and their cause (they supplied me with a
complete ad cost schedule for larger sized ads too) Although I
didn't bite, I did think it was a cool idea.

Here are some other ideas:

=> Use a very tiny vehicle (like a clown car) to ride in parades.

=> Use a large motor home type vehicle with your ads on it.

=> Travel in a custom bus like John Madden. Maybe you could have
a picture of yourself with a microphone.

=> Vanity license plates.

=> Vanity license plate frames (easily found on the web)

=> Use 4 wheel pedal power with advertising.,
http://www.rhoadescar.com/showroom.htm
I was thinking about doing this one myself for parades and
special events.

=> Decals. Here's a place that will make custom car window decals
for you http://www.tnl-ink.com/

=> Magnetic signs can be custom made at any sign shop or order on
the web.

=> If you regularly park in a high traffic area put your ad on
the side of a van.

Send your unique speaker marketing ideas to tom@antion.com. If we
use your idea, you get your website and email address mentioned
and you can pick a free tape from one of our Kick Series

5. SPEAKER HUMOR
=====================================================
=> Diets are for people who are thick and tired of it.

=> Do you think that when they asked George Washington for ID
that he just whipped out a quarter?
-- Steven Wright

=> I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman where the "Self
Help" section was, she said if she told me it would defeat the
purpose.

=> "OLD" IS WHEN..... Your friends compliment you on your new
alligator shoes and you're barefoot.

=> We don't devote nearly enough scientific research to finding a
cure for jerks.

=> We childproofed our home 3 years ago and they're still getting
in!

=> A three-legged dog walks into a bar and says, I'm lookin'
for the man who shot my paw!

=> Heart attacks ... God's revenge for eating his animal friends.

=> A doctor gave a man six months to live. The man couldn't pay
his bill, so he gave him another six months.

=> Promises are like babies. Easy to make, but hard to deliver.

=> Why isn't phonetic spelled the way it sounds?

=> How do they get a deer to cross at that yellow road sign?

=> My mind works like lightning. One brilliant flash and it is
gone.

=> There are three kinds of people. Those who can count and those
who can't

=> Change is inevitable . . . except from a vending machine.
