1. Quick Presentation Skills Tip

DOORS AND WINDOWS by Tom Antion
When deciding how to set up a presentation room when you have
full control of the logistics, pay close attention to these two
major distracters . . . doors and windows.
DOORS CAN BE A PROBLEM IN SEVERAL WAYS.
A. They may have squeaky hinges -- Solution: ask maintenance to
oil them.
B. They may have really loud latches -- Solution: use the masking
tape in your accessories bag (you do have one right?) to tape the
latch so that you don't hear it engage when the door opens and
closes. Also, make a sign and have it with your notes that says,
"In session. Please enter quietly" or something like that.
If possible you want to face the doors so that every time someone
enters or leaves they are not distractingly in the line of site
of the audience. If you are a humorous presenter, you may deliver
pre-planned ad libs to people coming and going because you will
see them instantly.
WINDOWS (not the computer kind although we know they can be
trouble too :) )
Windows can cause lighting problems when showing visuals and be
extremely distracting especially if there is beautiful scenery or
other distractions outside. I try to close the curtains if at all
possible to knock out both of those problems at once.
If there are no curtains, you may have to really scramble to
rethink your visuals which in bright daylight might be impossible
to see. In desperation circumstances I've taped up , flip chart
paper (it's not that good) wrapping paper, and news paper, but in
every one of those case things still weren't that good. One time
I hung my overcoat over a window. The more you know about the
room in advance, the better you'll do.

VALENTINES DAY LOVE CONTEST WINNERS
Last issue we had our annual Valentines Day contest. Readers
were supposed to count the number of times the word "love"
appeared in the 2/14/02 issue.
I issued the following warning / hint when I announced the
contest:
"TRY TO TAKE THE EASY WAY OUT AND YOU ARE GUARANTEED TO LOSE"
and sure enough hundreds of people took the easy way out by using
their find command and putting in the word "love." I put in two
instances at the end of two separate lines. One read lo-
ve and the other had the word wrapped to the next line with lo
ve. Maybe next year they'll heed my warning.
SUPERTRICK
Only two people even mentioned the supertrick I put in to through
you off. This did NOT change the total count. In the humor
section there was a line by Joan Rivers:
=>I hate housework! You make the beds, you do the dishes and six
months later you have to start all over again."
EXPLANATION: "all over again." has the letters l ove in a row,
but the instructions said the "word" love, not the "letters" "l"
"o" "v" "e"

2. Advanced Presentation Skills Article

INTERPLAY by Tom Antion
I love to interact with the audience. It is much easier now that
wireless microphones are so readily available. I can go right
into the audience, I can sit in one of their chairs, I can sit on
an audience member's lap if I want to (by now you should have
realized that I am inclined to be totally irreverent if I know
the audience can handle it).
You don't have to be as wild as I sometimes am to get the job
done. You can calmly go into the audience with a wireless
handheld microphone. Let the audience members ask their questions
directly to you while you hold the mic to their mouths so that
everyone else can hear. (Don't forget to bring the microphone
back to your mouth for the answer.)
Another technique I use frequently is to speak directly to one
audience member. It goes like this, "Sharon, this is just between
you and me." Whenever I do this, I can see out of the corner of
my eye everyone else killing themselves to eavesdrop on Sharon
and me. They feel like they are getting to hear something secret.
One-on-one interplay is also good when you are teasing or doing a
little roast humor on someone in the group. "Joe, lots of people
believe that you are one of the top sales managers in the
company. . . . Lots of people believe in the Easter Bunny too!"
I'll go right up to someone in the audience and touch them on the
shoulder while I'm talking (don't do this in Asia). I might say
(reading their nametag to get the name) "John here may have the
highest sales volume, but if his net income is no good, John is
not a happy guy."
Some speakers make up skits and give the audience members easy,
but funny, parts to play. This is just an advanced form of role-
playing.
Don't be afraid to get right in there and get your audience
involved, physically, mentally, and emotionally and you will be
on your way to becoming a NO ZZZZZs presenter.

3. HUMOR TECHNIQUE

MIC THE AUDIENCE by Tom Antion
You may have killed! You may have had them rolling in the aisles!
You may have gotten a 3 minute standing ovation! . . . but your
tape of this event might stink.
I have seen so many tapes ruined (including my own) because the
presenter didn't make sure there was a microphone recording
audience reactions. This isn't really a humor technique but it is
really important for humorous presenters for two reasons. 1. They
can better critique themselves after the event because they can
clearly hear what material worked and what didn't work. 2. They
can get good demonstration materials or make salable products out
of their recordings.
Nothing sounds worse than your funny line delivered and then
muffled or non existent audience reaction to it. This is because
of the fine noise canceling microphones that many people wear on
their lapels. IT'S DESIGNED TO CUT OUT BACKGROUND NOISE!
I guess a really good sound engineer/editor could doctor the tape
up with canned laughter, but what a hassle to do a perfect job at
this! And what if someone finds out which they will if the
addition of laughter isn't flawless. It's much easier to do it
right the first time and put a microphone(s) in the audience.
EQUIPMENT
If you are taping yourself, you'll need a portable mixing board
(any time you have more than one microphone going into the same
device, you'll need a mixing board). You'll also want an
omnidirectional microphone that pics up all the laughter and
comments people are yelling at you . . . .(well maybe not if
they're heckling you :) ) Visit a music store that caters to
bands for help picking out your equipment.
If you are being paid to be there, you need to nicely inquire
about the A/V and depending on how much clout you have see if you
can jockey for the extra microphone(s) in the audience. Even
offer to pay for it yourself if it means you'll get a better
tape.
This little bit of extra effort will mean a big difference in the
quality and usability of your recordings . . . and hey . . .if
you bother with all this you better be funny.

TEN TOP REASONS SPEAKERS/AUTHORS NEED A GOOD WEB SITE

You may think, "Why not let other Web sites sell my book?"
That's a good plan to get started, but one of the dangers is that
Online publishers or book-selling sites may not pay you on time,
pay you enough, or just go by the wayside because of low profits.
They pay around 30% royalties for print books and 50-70% royalty
for eBooks, and send you checks periodically through the mail. If
you have your own Web site for your informational products, you
will get to keep all of the money after expenses--always a great
advantage, and you will be seen as a market leader in your field.
1. Enhance your Online and brand presence with your particular
"branding"--why your product or service is the right choice--why
you are the preferred expert over your competition. For instance,
the one who says I can help you make your book dream a reality,
faster, cheaper, and easier. How? Through designing every part of
your book to sell copies--before you write a single chapter
applying the essential "hot selling points," and how to write
each chapter much faster with less editing using the "fast-
forward" technique.
2. Enhance product awareness. When your targeted visitors come to
you site to see your free articles and tips, the will become
aware of the products you offer. They may not buy the first time,
the second or even third time, but if you keep your site updated
your visitors will keep coming.
3. Boost your leads fast. When you entice your reader with a
testimonial or a free bonus report to leave their email address,
you will be able to continue to stay in touch with them. Allow
them to download a free chapter or excerpt of your eBook.
Illustrate with benefits and a testimonial why they should sign
up for your free ezine.
4. Reach new customers worldwide. Once you get up on the Web,
many people will come to your site from all over the world. Your
ezine or teleclass can connect with people outside your area
because your subscribers or participants think so much of you
that they forward the good news to their friends and associates.
Only targeted buyers come bringing a much higher rate of sales.
5. Add a new sales channel. Maybe people know you or your
products offline through networking groups or other business
ventures. A Web site makes you even more respected, and Online
people expect you to have a Web site because they love the
convenience and speed of Online ordering.
6. Increase your existing sales channels, such as post cards,
talks, book signings, or radio interviews where you do business
with an 800 free order telephone number. Offer improved customer
service and support because so many people like to buy Online.
7. Reduce support costs. You would spend far more on rent for a
real office and need more equipment and furniture plus more
support staff. Online marketing is far easier, cheaper and more
effective than the mail, telephone or fax.
8. Reduce the cost of doing business. In your home-based virtual
office, you will have much less overhead. For eBooks, you won't
have to spend time or money on postage, packaging, or mailing.
You reduce your dependence on other sales channels such as the
brick and mortar bookstore, which only take your book through a
distributor or wholesaler. All of these folks take a hefty
percentage to greatly reduce your profits--up to 90%. Online
bookstores will accept your eBook or print book readily by your
filling our a few forms and agreements.
9. Increase your profits up to ten times. When you sell your
eBook or product to an Online Book-selling site, you may receive
a commission up to 70%. When you sell your print books Online,
they will give you around 30% royalties delivered by check every
few months. These monies support the author, not the unwieldy
publishing monolith who spends most of its time and money on big-
ticket authors.
10. Reduce your marketing time because email communication is
short, fast, and gets to the point quickly. You don't have to
spend time buying stamps and special envelopes and stationery.
With a virtual assistant, you can look like Barnes and Noble
reaching many thousands of Online buyers by putting ongoing
attention and maintenance on your site.
If you are like me, you will enjoy keeping track of your
increasing sales each month. You will enjoy staying in touch with
your buyers. When they order on your site you can keep track of
them, put them in your address book, and send them follow up
information, free bonuses and requests.
