1. Quick Presentation Skills Tip

NON HOTEL EVENTS by Tom Antion
When you are speaking at an event that is NOT in a hotel setting,
you must pay particular attention to making sure you have
everything you need to make a smooth event.
Here's a brief checklist of things that may not be available if
you aren't in a hotel:
Projection Screen
Flip Chart
Extension cords
Power strips
Ice
Refreshments, coffee, juice, water, etc.
Lunch
Cups
Napkins
Pens
Pencils
Microphone and sound system
Adapters
Signage
Copies
Add to the above list any items particular to your event that the
hotel usually supplies. Pay close attention to every detail
because there may be no time to head to Radio Shack or some other
outside vendor before your event starts.

2. Advanced Presentation Skills Article

INTRODUCTIONS (advanced Part II) by Tom Antion
TEST HUMOR
Professional level speakers don't leave too many things to
chance. That's why I use test humor in my introductions when
speaking to unfamiliar groups.
Test humor is used to gauge the receptivity of the audience prior
to the speaker hitting the stage. Here's how I use it.
I insert a line into my written introduction that is mildly funny
and easy to deliver. You must remember that most introducers are
not professional speakers so don't try to make them deliver an
intricate line. I might put in a line like this:
"The last time Tom spoke the audience was glued to their seats .
. .(pause) Tom did this to make sure no one left." (pause)
While the introducer is delivering the mildly funny line, I am
closely watching the audience members. If they laugh or chuckle
at the line, I know that they are already going to be receptive
to humor. If they sit there stonefaced, then I know that they
will need additional warming up before I deliver any humor.
Many speakers I know -- even some seasoned pros -- don't use this
technique and try to deliver their opening funny line whether the
audience is receptive to it or not. This is like playing Russian
roulette with your reputation and critical opening time of your
speeches.
PLAN MORE THAN ONE OPENING
I always have more than one opening planned. Although I don't
believe you should always open with humor, I may have a humorous
opening ready along with a serious opening. If the audience is
stonedfaced, I deliver the serious opening. If they laugh at the
test humor, I now have a choice of a humorous opening or the
serious opening.
Either way I have just given myself an insurance policy against
the pitiful opening that would have occurred had I forced a
humorous opening on an audience that was not ready to receive it.
On my website I have quite a few lines you can pick from to use
in your introductions. I suggest using the same one over and over
(as long as you are speaking to different groups). That way you
will really get a feel for the reaction even if the introducer
flubs the line a little.

3. HUMOR TECHNIQUE
=====================================================
LYING by Tom Antion
Lying can be fun and a great learning experience too. One time I
created a program based on the Jim Carey movie "Liar, Liar."
My job was to lie my way through the program. I designed the
program so that my lies coincided with learning points that the
sales people were already responsible for. The first person that
caught me in each lie won a prize.
I can't really explain all the laughter that occurred, but there
was lots of it. People were jumping up out of their chairs trying
to be the first to catch me. They were running up and grabbing
the prizes out of the winners hands (good naturedly of course).
They were screaming FOUL if my lie was too close to the truth
which made it a half lie or half truth whichever way you looked
at it. It was a blast!
The method was also applauded by the sales manager who never
dreamed that all this new information could be emphasized in such
a fun manner. The sales people really came away with a great
learning experience which was far better than simply quizzing
them on the material.
I used lying in a different way during speeches I gave as an
impostor. I was introduced as some big guru from Europe and made
up a bunch of ridiculous stuff that again coincided with
information the audience should know. The difference in these
cases was that no one told the audience it was a joke. You could
just see the cogs in their heads turning as I told them things
completely opposite of what they knew to be true.
Oh, one note of caution. If you are like me and have the
imagination to get really bizarre with your comments, make sure
no
one gets out of the room thinking you were for real. Believe it
or not, their are people out there so gullible or oblivious that
they don't even realize you are pulling a joke.

INTERVIEW MARKETING by Tom Antion
Is this sneaky? Well, maybe. Is this ethical? Absolutely . . . as
long as your interview has a legitimate purpose besides marketing
yourself.
I'm talking about reaching high level people that you want to
meet and that could hire you by asking them for an interview.
Have I ever done this? No, but I would if it made sense in my
marketing plans.
One of the most prolific people I know that uses this technique
is a guy named Mike Litman http://www.mikelitman.com This guy has
a self promoted radio show and co-authored a book called
"Conversations with Millionaires."
Mike has done an excellent job of contacting many powerful and
influential people that can do business with him. He gives back
good value to them because he interviews them live on his show
and then rebroadcasts their interviews on his website giving them
the publicity they desire.
The same idea can be used if you don't have a radio show. Let's
say you are writing a book on management. You can contact pretty
large name CEOs and executives in an effort to Interview them for
your book. Some will screen you heavily and others will invite
you right in, while others won't even respond unless you're
already a big name writer.
Even if you only land a phone interview, you have now opened the
door. The next contact would be to have the person check what you
have written before publication. On one hand this is thoroughness
on your part, but on the other it is another contact with the
person. Your next contact might be sending them a copy of the
book and then asking for a personal follow up interview.
All of these contacts could lead to work if you have impressed
the person or referrals if big shot CEO doesn't need your
services.
When you use this idea, just be extra careful not to pitch
yourself. Let the pitch come from your insightful questions and
brilliant conversation. Don't forget to massively research the
person so that you WOW and flatter them with your knowledge of
their positions, successes, failures and philosophy.
Do this enough and you'll be on a first name basis with some
really powerful people that can open doors for you or give you
business directly.
