HOW TO RELAX FOR YOUR TALK By Patricia Fripp CSP, CPAE
We've all heard that the fear of death is second only to the
fear of public speaking. That may be true, but if you're
looking for one of the cheapest and most effective methods
of promoting your service or product, concentrate on the
positive results of doing a presentation. Think of the
contacts and prospective clients you'll be generating with
just 20 minutes in front of an audience.
In case accentuating the positive isn't enough to keep the
butterflies in your stomach in line, before you step up to
the podium, take time to work through these exercises to help
you channel all that nervousness into energy.
Physical Preparation: Warm up and relax your body and face.
a. If you're wearing high heels, take them off. Now, stand
on one leg and shake the other. When you put your foot back
on the ground, it's going to feel lighter than the other one.
Now, switch legs and shake. You want your energy to go
through the floor and out of your head. This sounds quite
cosmic; it isn't. It's a practical technique used by actors.
b. Shake your hands...fast. Hold them above your head,
bending at the wrist and elbow and then bring your hands
back down. This will make your hand movements more natural.
c. Warm up your face muscles by chewing in a highly
exaggerated way. Do shoulder and neck rolls. Imagine that
you're eye level with a clock. As you look at 12, pull as
much of your face up to 12 as you can; now move it to 3,
then down to 6 and finally over to 9.
All of these exercises serve to warm you up and relax you.
Those exaggerated movements make it easier for your movements
to flow more naturally. Now concentrate on the potential
customers you'll be cultivating with your talk. Aren't you
getting a warm feeling just thinking about that?
Go on--step up on the podium and profit from the experience.

3. HUMOR TECHNIQUE
=====================================================
Caricature, Cartoons and Comic Strips by Tom Antion
When certain prominent features of something or someone are
highlighted and other features are diminished, that is
called caricature. Studies have found that it is easier to
identify a political leader from a caricature than from a
real photograph.
You can use caricatures of yourself in your own promotional
material or in your programs to make fun of yourself. You
can do the same thing to make fun of your competitors or
your competitor's products by amplifying whatever feature
you want to emphasize.
Caricature artists are not too hard to locate. Many times
you can find them by looking in the yellow pages under the
categories of entertainment or party planning because they
frequently perform at parties.
Cartoons and Comic Strips are the most universally accepted
formats for humor across cultures. There are three ways to
use cartoons: first, you can tell the audience about a
cartoon you saw; second, you can cut the cartoon out of
its publication and show it; and third, you can make up a
cartoon yourself.
I saw a cartoon once where a lady was holding a gun to her
purse. The caption said "Give up the keys!" I use this
example in my Business Lite Seminar when I want to illustrate
the use of humor to help ease the tension in embarrassing
situations. (I have also used this line many times when I
am with a woman who is fumbling through her purse.) When I
tell the audience I saw a cartoon, it helps them paint a
mental picture of what I am describing with words.
Describing a cartoon is an easy method for using cartoons
without having them physically available or needing
audio/visual equipment to show them. Showing a cartoon is
a more powerful way to convey its humorous message. This is
especially true in international audiences where the visual
aspect takes on a greater significance. In a very small
crowd I might hold up the cartoon or I might pass it around.
In larger audiences, the cartoon should be projected
don't forget to get permission from the copyright holder) so
everyone can see it clearly. I like this method better anyway
because I can control when it pops up on the screen. I want
everyone to see the cartoon simultaneously so their laughter
will be cumulative. Try to fill the frame of the visual with
your cartoon or comic strip. You will create a greater impact.
(see example at http://www.antion.com/visualsample.htm )
The third way to use cartoons is to make them yourself. When
I first started teaching this subject I could not take
advantage of this method unless I hired an artist. Things
are different now. There are a number of inexpensive computer
software programs available which can be used, one of which
is Corel Draw. This program has 25,000 pieces of electronic
clip art, many of which are cartoons. I can make custom
overhead cartoons for my speaking engagements. All I do is
pick an applicable cartoon, add a custom caption for my
audience.

KILLER COPY: WORDS THAT ARE LIKE MAGNETS TO MONEY - Part 1
By David Garfinkel
I'll never forget what my accountant said five years ago
when he saw the ad I wrote for my services: "How many
scotches did you drink before you wrote this?"
He was kidding about the scotch. But he just couldn't
believe anyone in their right mind would write such a bold
and outrageous ad for their own writing, consulting and
speaking services, as I had.
Well, I spent $300 on that ad -- $200 to run it in a local
trade association directory, and $100 to have it reprinted
as a flyer.
The following year, that $300 ad turned into $12,341 in
new business for me. And $12,341 was just a tiny fraction
of my total business that year.
Why did I make so much money myself while there were so
many thousands of "starving writers" in the world? The
answer may surprise you. You see, it's not because I'm a
better writer. It's not my schooling. Not my resume. Not
any talent I was born with.
It's all because I learned how to write "killer copy."
How do you write killer copy?
You start your killer copy with an emotion-packed opening
statement that will get the attention of your reader. This
opening statement may be:
* a headline
* an opening sentence
* a subject line on an email
* the header on a Web page
or for that matter, the opening words in a telemarketing
script, radio commercial, or TV spot. What's important is
that you understand - your first words count for everything
because you must captivate peoples' imagination with those
words in order to keep their attention.
Here are examples of opening statements from actual
successful marketing pieces:
a) "Take the luxury vacation of your dreams at a reduced
cost because of this special offer" (from a travel
agency's letter to business owners.)
b) "How to stop overwhelm before it stops you" (from a
personal coach's ad aimed at stressed-out overachievers)
c) "Why almost every financial statement in family court
may not disclose the full net worth of the opposing spouse"
(from an investigator's sales letter to divorce lawyers.)
Then, after your emotion-packed opening statement, you just
a) Make a promise
b) Back it up with convincing proof and
c) Ask for action.
In part two, we'll look at how you do each of those three
techniques.
