BALLOONS Part II by Tom Antion

Last issue we talked about Air Filled Balloons and how to use
them in presentations
(http://www.antion.com/ezinebackissues2001.htm vol 3 num 11 ).
This issue we'll address ways to use helium filled balloons and
several special concerns with regard to helium and balloons.

WARNING: Do not under any circumstance inhale or allow anyone to
inhale helium. There are many documented cases of people inhaling
helium and dropping dead on the spot. The helium replaces the
oxygen in the lungs and you are gone fast.

WARNING: Do not release balloons into the air. The balloons have
been found inside dead animals. You don't want to kill an animal
and you don't want animal activists picketing your event.

=> Obtain really small portable helium tanks from party stores
(they won't blow up many balloons, but they are fairly easy to
carry)

=> Use strings and weights to line the entranceway to your
seating area. You can use different length strings to make
interesting patterns.

=> Put prizes in the balloons before you blow them up. Put long
enough strings on each balloon so it can be retrieved if someone
accidentally lets one go to the ceiling. (Here's a sneaky way to
retrieve a balloon if the ceilings are really high. Get another
helium balloon and tape a tack to it with the point facing up.
Attach a long string to it and let the balloon rise to the
ceiling where it will puncture the stray balloon causing it to
fall back to the floor.)

=> This takes more skill, but you can create a balloon arch which
makes a really pretty backdrop for the stage or you could have
people walk through it as they enter the room.

TOUCHING by Tom Antion

Touching audience members physically can occur at three times:
Before, during and after a presentation.

Before the presentation many savvy presenters spend the entire
time (after they have checked their equipment) shaking hands with
audience members for the purpose of increasing their connection
with the audience. Don't do the "politicians handshake" where you
are looking for the next person to "attack" while you are shaking
a person's hand.

Depending on the nature of the crowd, you might hug someone, or
touch them on the shoulder. Watch out in "politically correct
areas and businesses.

During the presentation you might have someone on stage with you.
You may have to touch them to position them for a demonstration
or put your arm around their shoulder while someone takes a
picture. You also might go out into the crowd and shake someone's
hand, or touch them on the shoulder while you are talking to them
or other audience members.

After the presentation (if you were really good) people may want
to come up to you and have their picture taken with you or
actually hug you.

There are several issues at play and they change depending on
your age, gender, demeanor and atmosphere. The first thing you
don't want to do is send the wrong message with your touching. I
have heard women complaining that a male presenter was just a
little too friendly. With women presenters, you probably don't
want to cast an image of being a little too available.

Ideally the touching you do should be used to create a closer
connection with the audience members so they listen more to your
message. Here are some guidelines:

MEN:
=> Be set up early so you can shake lots of hands before the
presentation.

=> Don't concentrate on approaching only the physically
attractive audience members.

=> Don't be rubbing necks and shoulders (unless that's what your
presentation is about) on women. It could easily be construed as
looking for "cheap feels."

WOMEN
=> Same as above. Be there early and shake lots of hands.

=> Be very careful of your attention to both the male and female
audience members. Too much attention to the cute guys will have
all the females and most of the guys against you.

=> Realize that you can get away with things that a guy couldn't.
And use it to your advantage. An example of this is Jeanne
Robertson who held male beauty contests and pulled up mens'
pant legs on stage.

3. HUMOR TECHNIQUE
=====================================================
NUMBERS by Tom Antion

Most businesses have numerous uses for numbers, both written and
oral. Some numbers are funnier and more interesting than others.
A number like zero has other names that are funny that aren't
even numbers.

Goose egg, nada, nil, zip and zilch are all funny ways to express
the number zero. Even zero is funnier than the word none.
Although none is funny when you talk about the two chances of a
hostile takeover as slim and none. A hundred dollar bill is a C-
Note, a five-dollar bill is a fin. If someone is outrageously
rich, they could be a zillionaire.

If you want to exaggerate a little bit, or if you have some tough
news to deliver that involves numbers, add a touch of levity to
help soothe the sting.

One common rule of humor that does not apply to numbers is
brevity. In all other types of humor you should conserve the
number of words you use. Normally you want to use the fewest
words possible to get to the punch line. When using numbers in a
presentation, pronounce them using the longest version possible.
This gives them more punch. The digits 1,500 should be recited as
one thousand five hundred, not fifteen hundred. The time of 8:15
should be a quarter past eight, not eight fifteen. 6'2" should be
six feet two inches not six-two.

4. $$$$$$$ SPEAKER MARKETING TIP $$$$$$$$
=====================================================
POSTCARDS by Tom Antion

Ok OK I know this isn't the high tech stuff I'm always using, but
the truth is that hitting someone with a marketing message in
several different fashions will get more results than depending
on only one. I still love email because it is the cheapest and
less risky of all, but post cards come next.

I sat in on Nancy Miller's mailto:nancy@roundsmiller.com session
at the National Speakers association and got my first taste of
organized post card promotions. She showed me really innovative
and inexpensive ways to get your message across with postcards.

I then got a course from Alex Mandossian
http://www.marketingwithpostcards.com/ that filled in all the
details.

I haven't done anything fancy yet, but I got immediate results
just by sending out a plain black on blue cardstock postcard. I
made it by cutting a regular sheet of cardstock in half which
gave me two postcards per sheet. I had it duplicated at Office
Depot.

It immediately generated seminar attendees that just don't use
their email as much as I do and at least one joint venture is
coming out of it.

You can also use post cards to get the email address of people on
your database. You could offer some incentive to sign up for your
email newsletter so your marketing to that prospect is free from
then on. Tapping your database is always valuable and postcards
are a great way to do it.

If you would like to be on the snail mail list for my post card
mailings leave your name and address at
http://www.public-speaking.org/snailmail.htm (As always your
information is never sold or rented.)
