1. Quick Presentation Skills Tip
=====================================================
WATCH OUT by Kathie Thomas

I have lost count of the number of times I see speakers look at
their watches when presenting. Something I learned not to do when
first starting out. It immediately prompts the audience to look
at their watches too. Best to either seek out where there is a
wall clock before getting up to present, or take your watch off
and place it on the lectern before starting, therefore being able
to casually pass by it during the presentation from time to time.

This is a simple technique I was taught several years ago that
has helped me considerably to ensure I am on time without making
the audience aware of it.

SOURCES OF MATERIAL Part II by Tom Antion

In the last issue we taught you to keep your eyes open for new
material and to record it immediately.
http://www.antion.com/ezinebackissues2001.htm
(antion.com/ezinebackissues2001.htm)

Now let's see how you would turn a seemingly insignificant life
incident into usable speech material. Let's go back to the
incident I mentioned in the last issue where I talked about your
electricity going out.

Here it is:

". . . your electricity going out in the middle of the night,
which caused your alarm clock to malfunction, which caused you to
be late for work, which caused you to run in late to your
presentation that morning."

Let's see how you might use that in a presentation. But first
let's apply some story telling questions from the "Wake 'em Up
Video Professional Speaking System"
http://www.antion.com/speakervideo.htm
(antion.com/speakervideo.htm)

QUESTIONS

IS THE STORY CLEAN? Yes it is clean.

WHAT POINT DOES IT ILLUSTRATE? It could mean that there was a
malfunction in the house which caused a short and the main
breaker prevented the house from catching on fire.

Point: Have fail-safe mechanisms in place to protect your
business not only from physical damage, but from business
breakdowns too.

WHAT OTHER POINTS DOES IT ILLUSTRATE?

Point: Electricity is something we take for granted. When it's
not there, we suffer.

Undoubtedly more points could be made, but let's look at how
taking electricity for granted could be used to help make a point
in a presentation.

HERE'S WHAT YOU SAY
"A few weeks back my electricity went off in the middle of the
night. I awoke the next morning thinking I had just had one of
the best night's sleep I had had in a long time until . . . I saw
my digital alarm clock blinking at me. I jumped up and ran to
find my wristwatch. 9:30 a.m. (heavy emphasis) I still hadn't
buttoned my pants as I jumped in the car and raced to work for my
9:30 a.m. (again - heavy emphasis) presentation.

Luckily, they waited for me and I got through the day. But after
everything settled down, I got to thinking about how we really
take electricity for granted. It's just supposed to be there.
When it's there all the time, we sometimes forget what a disaster
it would be if it wasn't there."

From this point in the story, if it were a business audience, you
could talk about long-term customers and how we might take them
for granted, or if it was a keynote speech about balancing home
and work you could talk about taking our spouses for granted.

You can see that the tiniest life incident can be used to help
reinforce points in your presentation.

3. HUMOR TECHNIQUE
=====================================================
EVALUATION FUNNIES by Tom Antion

You can have great fun by telling people what to write on their
evaluation sheets. Of course you have to make sure that the
people reading them have a good sense of humor. If they do, here
are some ideas:

Patricia Fripp tells the audience, "If you like me, write on your
evaluation sheet, 'bring her back and pay her double.'"

I've had them write all kinds of bizarre stuff like:

"I didn't like his green spiked hair." (I'm obviously corporate
looking with short black hair)

"You give me great hope that I can also be a speaker because you
are obviously illiterate."

"There are three things I liked about today's speaker . . . I
just can't think of any of them right now."

Think up a bunch of your own and have fun when evaluation time
comes.

4. $$$$$$$ SPEAKER MARKETING TIP $$$$$$$$
=====================================================
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE YOU TITLE YOUR NEXT BOOK, SPECIAL
REPORT, OR SPEECH By Yanik Silver
http://www.instantsalesletters.com/al/af.cgi?3556
(instantsalesletters.com/al/af.cgi?3556)

A good title is a work of genius...

That's what Emanuel Haldeman-Julius said about changing the title
of a book to increase sales. And he should know, he's the guy who
single-handedly sold more than 100,000,000 "little blue books"
during the first part of the 20th century (Yes, I said 100
million copies).

The most remarkable thing is that Haldeman-Julius simply
advertised his books by title alone. There was no selling copy,
only the title of the book. That's it.

So before you decide on any haphazard title for your next book,
special report, or speech you might want to take advice from this
savvy marketer.

Haldeman-Julius had a policy in his business - if a title didn't
sell over 10,000 copies a year it was sent to a place in his
office called "The Hospital". Inside the Hospital he went to work
coming up with a new title for the poorly selling book and re-
releasing it.

He tells about a book originally being titled "The Art of
Controversy" which never really sold until it was changed to "How
to Argue Logically" and then it leapt up to 30,000 copies. The
amazing thing is that nothing else was changed inside the book,
just the title.

And from this in-the-trenches research, Haldeman-Julius
discovered certain title words that could increase the sales of
almost any book when applied.

For instance the words "The Truth About" increased sales for one
book starting its publishing life as "Patent Medicine". This book
by Dr. Arthur Cramp only sold 3,000 copies in 1925 but when the
title was changed to "The Truth About Patent Medicine" it rose up
to a respectable 10,000 copies.

Therefore the words "The Truth About" are magical.

Next, he found the words "Life" and "Love" to work well. Followed
by the worn, but still very powerful phrase "How To".

Books with "How To" in the title were almost always placed at the
top of his sales list. Take for example, the title "How to
Psycho-Analyze Yourself" sold 43,000 copies while a similar title
"Psycho-Analysis Explained" sold 5,000 less copies. And the title
"How I Psycho-Analyzed Myself" managed to attract only 13,500
buyers.

What's more, Haldeman-Julius discovered the public was (and still
is) clamoring for facts. So the words "The Facts You Should Know"
proved a big winner.

So how can you apply this information?

Easy!

The way you should use this wisdom from the ages is by applying
it to speech titles, ebooks, ezine articles, free reports and
your headlines.

5. SPEAKER HUMOR
=====================================================

=> Congratulations. This is the earliest you have ever been late.

=> An angry boss yelled, "YOU SHOULD HAVE BEEN HERE AT 8:00."
The reply, "Why? What happened?"

=> A ten minute coffee break a day equals over 43 hours over the
course of a year . . . hey that's a week's vacation.

=> Sign: When everything else fails, why not try what the boss
suggested?

=> Administrative assistant test:
Can you say the following? If so, you're hired.

"She hasn't come in yet."
"I expect her any minute."
"She called to say she would be a little late."
"She came in, but had to leave."
"She's gone to lunch."
"She should be back from lunch any minute."
"She's not back from lunch yet. May I take a message?"
"She's in the building."
"She's away from her desk."
"I'm not sure whether she'll be back or not."
"Sorry. She's gone for the day."
"Sorry. She's left the company."

=> Boss: "Don't discuss your paycheck with others."
Employee: "Don't worry. I'm as ashamed of it as you are."

=> Sign: We are asking that somewhere between starting time and
quitting time . . . without infringing on lunchtime, coffee
breaks, rest periods, ticket selling and vacation planning that
each employee find some time that can be used for a work break."
We believe this will be an aid to steady employment and regular
paychecks and that each employee will give it a fair trial."

=> Salesperson: On my first day out I got two orders. . . .Get
out! and stay out!
