1. Quick Presentation Skills Tip
=====================================================
BE THERE AND BE FIRM by Tom Antion

Do not let people with other things on their mind mess up your
presentation! If you are in your presentation room early and have
real reasons for doing what you are doing, you will have the best
luck at commanding your stage.

I was the opening speaker at an event recently and was in the
room way early to set up and test everything. It was my job to
kick off the event and WOW the crowd in my half day presentation.

Thirty minutes before start time one of the harried meeting
organizers wanted to change my entire setup around to accommodate
the introducer. I was gracious and polite, but I was not about to
ruin my opening to accommodate the introducer. So here's what I
did:

=> I politely explained my reasoning to the organizer. I told her
that what she had in mind was going to totally blow the beginning
of my talk and make us all look like fools as the introducer
brought me on stage. . . .Why would we look like fools? Because
at the peak of the intro, we would have had to move tables
around, reboot a computer and switch clip on microphones. . . .
This is no way for a professional to come on stage to WOW a
crowd.

=> I suggested alternative ways to accommodate the very brief
needs of the introducer.

=> I did all of the above in a firm, but polite fashion so I did
not appear arrogant or unreasonable.

(We want your quick tips and genius techniques for this section.
mailto:tom@antion.com put SPEAKING TIP in the subject line.)

2. Advanced Presentation Skills Article
=====================================================
CONCLUDE AT THE BEGINNING by Tripp Frohlichstein

If you must write your speech, here's some advice. Write it, then
take your conclusion, move it to near the top of the speech and
write a new conclusion. This will help your audience understand
the gist of what they are about to hear. With your message at the
beginning of the presentation, the rest of what you say will make
more sense...especially if you weave your "conclusion" throughout
the presentation. Here's a simple conceptual example:

A SPEECH ON THE WEATHER

WRONG:
The temperature is high
The winds are blowing at high speeds
The humidity is high
It is raining
My conclusion (there are many that could be drawn) - It's a lousy
day outside.

RIGHT:
It's a lousy day outside
I say this because the temperature is high
The winds are blowing at high speeds
The humidity is high
It is raining
So clearly, my conclusion, it's a rotten day out.

EVEN BETTER (as this weaves the message throughout):
It's a lousy day outside.
I say this because the temperature is high which is part of the
reason it's so bad out
The winds are blowing at high speeds which makes it even worse
outside
The humidity is high which makes it uncomfortable
It is raining which combined with everything else makes it
miserable out
So clearly, my conclusion, it's a rotten day out.

3. HUMOR TECHNIQUE
=====================================================
CREATE A CHARACTER by Tom Antion

You can either make up a character or imitate someone for lots of
fun and laughter.

We've seen famous examples of performers creating characters.
Roseanne Roseannadanna was the brainchild of the late Gilda
Radner. Jim Carey invented Fire Captain Bill. Steve Martin
created a Wild and Crazy Guy. You can also imitate your uncle
Harry or someone you ran into in the supermarket. None of these
characters are difficult to perform because you are not acting as
an impersonator of a famous person that is real.

Being an impersonator is hard because your imitation of Bill
Clinton's voice and mannerisms will be judged against the real
Bill Clinton. Making up characters or imitating unknown people
like your aunt Maude is easy because your performance can't be
compared to anything.

You can either stay in character for the entire length of your
performance or you can pop in and out of character. You can also
have a dialog going on between yourself and the character. You
can even dress up as the character if you want to.

Be careful when using a strong dialect of an ethnic group to
which you do not belong. You could be perceived as making fun of
the group. Also, if you are going to be doing a dialect at least
practice enough to do it well.

4. $$$$$$$ SPEAKER MARKETING TIP $$$$$$$$
=====================================================
EXPERT! by Caryn Amster

I start my marketing talks by asking everyone to take out a
business card and look at it. They always do! Then I ask how many
have the word EXPERT on their cards. So far nobody has said yes.
I ask them, "Aren't you all experts in your fields?" They all
reply they are!

This gets them appreciating themselves and feeling good about
themselves. They also now have their business card in their hand.

I ask them to make sure their email address is on their card.
Then I ask them to pass it forward to receive a free subscription
to my email marketing newsletter.

It gets them subscribed. It gets them to my web site and it gets
me more business. Sometimes I have a drawing for some tapes or
other pertinent materials.
