1. Quick Presentation Skills Tip

GIVE 'EM WHAT THEY WANT by Tom Antion
I have been in situations where I meticulously planned for a big
event and when I showed up there were only three people in the
audience. You can't just quit and walk away, but you can't work
a plan for 500 on only 3.
So what do you do? You turn it into a massive positive the for the
three that attended. You immediately scrap your big plan and tell
the 3 people you will be their personal consultant for the next
x hours. Then you answer their questions and make them feel like
they are the only persons in the world for the entire time.
As a professional you don't mope around crying because your product
sales would suffer or because your ego is suffering. You give it
your all whether there are 3 or 3000 in the audience.

LINE OF SIGHT by Tom Antion
When you speak alot you run into some crazy room setups. It's your
job to be there early to make sure all the little preparation
details taken care of. One of these details is the visibility of
you and your visuals from each chair in the audience.
It doesn't even amaze me any more that a hotel room setup crew would
put up a projection screen that 1/3 of the audience couldn't possibly
see. Most of the time this occurs when tables and or chairs are placed
too far forward in the room. The people on the sides are at much too
sharp an angle to see anything on the screen and they only see you
in profile.
Another situation is when there are pillars in the room. The setup
people normally just slap tables up to suit themselves and forget that
the people sitting in the chairs just might like to see what is going
on at the stage. When you have pillars to deal with you must be very
aware of your stage positioning. You won't be able to be seen the entire
time by everyone because of the pillars, but you can limit the time you
are unseen by noting the worst areas of the stage with an "X" of tape on
the floor. Avoid standing still anywhere near the "X." It's OK to pass
by or over the "X," just don't plant yourself near it.
It's your job to check every chair in the room to be sure every
participant has an unobstructed line of sight for each part of your
presentation. They must be able to see the screen, the flipchart and
you wherever you travel on the stage.
If possible, be in the room early when lots of setup crew are around
so that you can make the adjustments before the room is totally set.
Taking care of details like this is one more vote for you as a highly
polished presenter.

3. HUMOR TECHNIQUE
=====================================================
EXAGGERATION by Tom Antion
Expanding or diminishing proportions can be a fun way to create humor.
It's similar to a caricature artist that outrageously exaggerates the
features of an individual, while still keeping the person recognizable.
I did a talk one time for Secretaries Day at a large insurance company.
I was making a point about how hectic it always was for the secretaries.
It went like this, "You're answering the telephone, the fax machine is
ringing, you're making copies, and you're filing every policy clear back
to 1910." The secretaries could relate to each item mentioned. They
obviously did lots of filing, but certainly not as far back as 1910.
Exaggerating this date was funny to them and drove home the point that
they always had lots of work piled up.
The key to using exaggeration is to inflate or deflate whatever you are
talking about so much that it is obviously an exaggeration. In the last
example you wouldn't want to use the year 1999 if you were doing the talk
in 2000 because it is very likely that an insurance company would really
be working on a file for a year or more. That's not funny.
Of course, who am I to tell you what is funny. I spent two terms in the
third grade . . . Truman's and Eisenhower's. hahahahahahaa

PUT OUT . . . THE EASY WAY Part I by Tom Antion
In an effort to keep at least one of my feet imbedded deeply in my own
mouth I told a lady in one of my seminars that she just needed to "Put Out"
if she wanted to get more business.
NOW WAIT A MINUTE . . . Before you start sending me hate mail like that
goof ball a couple weeks ago, let me explain. I was trying to tell her
that instead of guarding everything she had ever created that she should
give it away and more business would come to her.
Here's how it works: You may remember that a little over a month ago I
"put out" a FREE 7 Day mini course on Electronic Marketing. (If you missed
it, you can still take it by sending a blank email to
minicourse@aweber.com )
About 1200 people signed up for it in the first couple days. At the end of
the first week I took in about $7000.00 in sales from my FREE minicourse.
You might ask, "Tom, was it a scam? Was it just a giant sales letter?" No
it was not a scam, and the answer to the second question is yes AND no. It
was a perfectly legitimate and credible marketing technique. . . .
It's not new either. It's called "Give before you get."
I gave good information that people need to know so that they can both
thrive
in E Marketing and also so they don't get taken by people selling them poor
services. There is nothing wrong with educating people about the benefits of
your service. There was no hard sales pitch at all. Once the people who took
the course realized that there was quite a bit they needed to know, they
made
the decision to purchase the information.
Next issue in Part II I'll tell you how I used simple automated Internet
tools
that allowed me to do the entire promotion for $15.00 . . . Until then . . .
just "Put Out."

electronic marketing techniques:

5. ALL IDIOMS THIS ISSUE
=====================================================
=> "I'm all ears"
This is about 300 years old. The ear is a very important organ because it
let's us hear. If you are "all ears" it's as if no other part of your body
mattered except your ears. It, of course, means you are listening intently.
=> "At the drop of a hat"
In the old days races were started by dropping a hat. The term has come to
mean anything done quickly and on the "spur of the moment."
=> "A babe in the woods"
In 1595 there was a story called "The Children in the Wood." It was about
a planned kidnapping of two children. The kidnapper was supposed to kill
the children, but instead took pity on them and left them in the woods.
They didn't survive. (Editors Note: Damn depressing story if you ask me)
Anyway the term means that inexperienced people that can't take care of
themselves are likely to fail.
=> "Back to square one"
Based on board games where you advanced by squares on the board. If you
were sent back to "Square One" you had to advance all over again which
is today's meaning.
=> "Down the drain"
Water is a precious thing in many parts of the world. If it goes
"down the drain" it is wasted and gone forever. The phrase is now thought
of a anything precious that is lost or wasted. .
