THEY DON'T KNOW WHERE YOU ARE GOING by Tom Antion

Past President of the National Speakers Association Mike McKinley
always says, "Do not worry about minor mistakes. The audience
does not know your script." If you have lots of good material, it will
make very little difference in the big scheme of things if you forget to
mention something you had planned to say. It will however make a
BIG difference if you get so rattled because you left something out
that you start a domino effect of additional mistakes and omissions.

GET EM ON STAGE Part II by Tom Antion

In Part I we looked at why it is good to get people on stage with you
( http:www.antion.com/ezinebackissues.htm vol 1 num 19) Now we
will take a look at what things you can do with them once you get them
on stage. According to a study done at the University of Wichita, public
recognition is one of the top motivators of people. If you claim to be a
"motivational" speaker of some sort, it might be a good idea for you to
use your highly public profile while you are speaking to give out public
recognition. I find out the good things that particular audience members
have done during my extensive pre-program research (Kick Series
TeleSeminar Tape Number 5 http://www.antion.com/telesemtapes.htm )
Here are some ways to use the information you learn:

=> Recognize a single audience member for a particular achievement,
or for a period of high performance.
=> Recognize a group of audience members for a particular achievement,
or period of high performance.

While they are on-stage make a custom visual highlighting their achievement,
or performance (If you use an overhead you can give it to the audience
member or team after you show it. Do not forget to include your company
name at the bottom of the visual. Many times these will be hung on the wall
in the organization which will give you free publicity).

Another reason to get an audience member or group on stage is for some
sort of demonstration. I do one where I'm demonstrating personal space
across cultures. The person helping me gets a good laugh from the audience
as we interact. Try to have pre planned ad libs
( http://www.antion.com/articles/freechap.htm ) ready to go for many of the
comments or questions you anticipate from the people on stage.

You can also have someone on stage to assist you in writing on the flip
chart, changing overheads, or to blow a horn when someone in the audience
asks a good question. Use your imagination. Whenever, someone is up there
to assist you, make sure you give them some kind of prize. One of your
products is usually good because it gives you a chance to mention it without
using a hard sell. And just about always lead the audience in a round of applause
for the helper as they return to their seat.

3. HUMOR TECHNIQUE
=====================================================
MOCK UPS by Tom Antion

You can make fake newspaper articles and headlines and book covers
by using your computer software and printer.

To mock up a newspaper article, simply find the column function of
your word processor and set the column width to approximate a real
newspaper. It does not matter that your are not holding up actual newsprint
because you could have simply cut the article from a newspaper and had it
photocopied. If you want to actually use a real newspaper, you could go through
a lengthy trial and error process trying to shade a piece of laser paper to
approximate the color of your newspaper. I guess you could also find some
actual newsprint that would feed through your printer. The easiest way is to
simply paste or tape your headline or article on one of the inside pages of a real
newspaper and then open the paper so you can read the paste up, but the audience
can not really see it.

Humorist and parody writer David Glickman gave me this really funny idea . He
uses his color inkjet printer to duplicate the black box and yellow letters that are
on the front of all the "Dummies" series of books. He then pastes his new title over
the one on an actual "Dummies" book. The rest of the cover is so busy that people
only focus on the big black box. From a distance you can't even tell it is a mockup.
I just used this techniques for a big cable company. The title was, "Digital Cable TV
Maintenance and Installation for Dummies." It is not too funny to you, but to the
targeted audience it was hilarious.

You can also mock up fake telegrams and letters from well known people who are
not at the event.

4. $$$$$$$ SPEAKER MARKETING TIP $$$$$$$$
=====================================================
FORTHCOMING BOOKS by Tom Antion

I just learned this fantastic long term promotional tip from Joan Stewart when
she co hosted a kick series seminar with me on "Getting Free Publicity"
( http://www.antion.com/telesemtapes.htm Tape number 7)

Joan mentioned a publication called "Forthcoming Books." One of my multipart
media marketing strategy is to be mentioned in books written by other experts
(TeleSeminar Tape number 4). Most of my mentions have been from people that
already know me. Going to "Forthcoming Books" allows you to search on what
books are being written on whatever topic you might know about. You can send
your comments or offer yourself as a resource to the authors and editors of these
yet unpublished books and in many cases get yourself mentioned. This allows you
to piggyback on whatever publicity they generate for the book and most books live
on for years which gives you a lengthy, albeit small, exposure.

For more information on free publicity contact Joan at http://www.publicityhound.com
