Why Are Airplane Flights Not Straight Lines?

"The shortest distance between two points is always a straight line in Euclidean geometry. This is the geometry typically taught in school, where figures are two-dimensional and represented on a flat surface, like a notebook page. In reality, the shortest distance is a curve called a geodesic. Therefore, Euclidean geometry is not used; instead, Riemannian geometry is employed. This mathematical principle is used to chart the most economical routes for airplanes, allowing for savings in time and fuel. This is further irrefutable proof of the sphericity of our planet."
