Jobs of the Past.

Mary Smith worked as a "knocker-up," a Waker, in 1930s England. She would walk through the still-dark streets, fill her small blowpipe with peas, aim at the window of her client on the second floor, and... fire! She continued until she was sure the client was awake. Alarm clocks were expensive and unreliable, so workers, as well as doctors, teachers, and drivers, preferred to rely on Mary and the many knockers-up who roamed the industrial cities for a few coins.

The miners' houses had slate panels fixed to the outside walls where the miners wrote their shift details with chalk so that Mary could wake them at the right time.

A strange job that became extinct only in the 1970s.
