To get the normal ZIP file send the following command to our LISTSERV :

GET fn ZIP

(Where fn is the name of the file you want.)

To get an XXENCODED ZIP file (use this if your gateways have trouble
with binary files) use the following command :

GET fn ZIP f=XXE

To get several small XXENCODED files (use this if your gateways limit
the size of files) :

GET fn ZIP f=XXE,split

Our disk is also accessible by anonymous FTP at cc1.kuleuven.ac.be.
The OS2 files are available in the ANONYMOU.201 directory. To get a
list of files get the O2.FILELIST in the (default) ANONYMOU.191

* Gpf GUI Design Tool for OS/2 PM Adds 32-bits C Code Generation

Gpf Systems Inc. announced version 2.0 of their GUI Programming
Facility (Gpf) for OS/2 2.0 Presentation Manager. Gpf 2.0 sopports creation
of native 32-bit applications and custom graphical objects. Developers can
select 16-bit or 32-bit generation for each screen they design. The 32-bit
generator targets IBM's 32-bit C Set/2 compiler, with support for other
compilers planned. Gpf 2.0 sopports design of custom controls to augment the
standard menus, buttons, fields, and other interface objects.
Gpf runs on OS/2 2.0 or later versions and supports Extended Edition
forapplications using OS/2 Database Manager. Gpf Systems recommends 6 Mb RAM
for their design tool, wich requires a mouse and 4 MB disk space.
Gpf 2.0 is piced at $995.

* OS/2 2.0 C++ Class Library and Other Products

Raleigh Systems Inc. has announced ObjectPM, an OS/2 2.0 C++ class
library, ObjectComm, a system for managing communication between OS/2 and
MVS, and WGCM, software that manages record and object locking for
multi-user applications under OS/2.
ObjectPM includes over 120 class objects representing windows,
controls, graphics, tools, forms, threads, and more, in an open environment
that allows for direct calls to OS/2. High level dialog-window programming
and building data-entry screens is supported by ObjectPM's Forms Manager,
which converts a dialog window into a "form" and edit controls and buttons
into "fields". ObjectPM supports many fields types, data validation,
character filtering, managing row-oriented data, and support for Database
Manager types and host variables.
ObjectPM is available for Zortech and Glockenspiel C++ at $495 (or
$995 with source). Applications created with the DLL royalty-free.

Subject: LAN Requester and TCP/IP Coexistence

Does anyone have any experience of getting LAN Requester 2.0 and
TCP/IP for OS/2 release 1.2 to work happily together through the same
Token-ring card?
I have a PS/2 model 70-A21 running OS/2 2.0, and need to be able to use
LANRequester for access to printers etc. concurrently with TCP/IP for
X-windows access to a number of RS6000 Unix machines.
My problem appears to be that i have the right configuration of the NDIS
driver and PROTOCOL.INI for the TCP/IP support (this works fine) but there
is no mention of how to provide NETBEUI support via NDIS in any of the
documentation.

If you have done it, whats in your PROTOCOL.INI??

Subject: FDFORMAT and TIMESET under OS/2

Hello Everyone,

I was wondering if anyone knows where I can find an OS/2 version of
two very useful programs FDFORMAT/FDREAD and TIMESET. The former
allows to increase the capacity of floppies (360 K to 820 K, for
example) and the latter sets the computer clock by synchronizing it to
either the NIST or the Naval Observatory Atomic Clock.

Both of these worked wonderfully under DOS but FDFORMAT/FDREAD seems
to do something bizzare under DOS Session - the screen scrolls for some
time and then a whole bunch of illegible characters show up follwoed by
a beep. I haven't tried reading the FDFORMATed diskettes yet so I am
not sure how this will work, but the initial results are somewhat
disconcerting. TIMESET on the other hand just locks itself up in a DOS
Session and requires the CTRL-ESC style termination.

I would really appreciate it if someone could let me know where to
find the updated versions of these programs or if it is possible to get
them to work in OS/2. My system is i486-33 EISA, 8 Meg. RAM, OS/2 2.0
all HPFS on the hard disk. Thanks !

John Duchowski

From: Scott Glynn <UCA122@URIACC>
Subject: BBS' and OS/2.0

I have been having a few problems with running my bbs under OS/2 2.0.
Here is some back ground first: Computer: 386sx 16MHz, 5MB RAM, 130mb HD
and a 120mb HD. Video: Performance Xpress SVGA+ card w/1MB of vram and
the Tseng 4000 chipset. BBS software: Telegard v. 2.7, DSZ 05/03/92
(protocol driver for X,Y,Z modem) and X00v149a (fossil driver, only
fossil driver that seems to work with OS/2).
Ok now the problems:
1. Sometimes for no APPEARENT reason, the bbs will lock up. This
could happen while someone is online, when they logoff or while the bbs
is waiting for callers. It will sometimes happen when I have the bbs in
the background/window while I'm doing other things. Other times it will
happen when the bbs is the only thing running. Seems like there is no
rhyme or reason for it. The only way to get out of it is to press
CTRL-ESC and then close the bbs from there. Also, the BBS does not lock
up when it is run under straight DOS.
2. I just recently changed the DOS setting for the Video-Mode-
restriction to CGA....giving the BBS over 700k of conventional memory
to run in. I did this hoping this will help allow other programs to run
faster since the bbs doesn't need EGA or VGA. The problem arose shortly
after turning on the restriction. Most of the time when I switch away
from the bbs to do something else and then switch back, the colors and
characters are all distorted. The only thing I can do to switch it back
to normal is to quit the bbs and then restart it, but it is a pain to
constently do this.
3. I have a HP Quiet Jet printer and there are NO HP printer
drivers for it in OS/2. The Quiet Jet can emulate an Epson 9-pin printer
but things never seem to print out as fast or as good of a quality. Also,
when I print out a text file, the text file prints out about half in size
and length, so basically 2 pages of text actually only take up 1 page of
paper.....I wouldn't mind so much, but it prints out so slow.

So, basically I would like to know if any one has any suggestions,
hints or solutions to any or all of these problems.
Oh, I forgot to mention that the modem I use for my bbs is a straight
no frills 2400 baud.

Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated

Subject: SYS1324, error 5

After a hardware crash, my OS/2 system was unusable, so I erase all
directories created by its installation and re-installed it. I found
that most programs would give me error 5, either DOS or OS/2 1.x (like
the MS supplied Fortran 6.1 OS/2 and bound EXE files). I found that the
"extended attributes" were screwed up or missing. I use FAT so I can
dual-boot. Following the advice in OS/2 help files, I rebooted from the
installation diskette, went to command-line OS/2, copied OS/2 CHKDSK to a
diskette, rebooted again from the installation diskettes to command-line
OS/2 (IBM were not smart enough to put "first aid" utilities like CHKDSK
on the first installation diskette) and run from the A: drive "CHKDSK C:
/F". This took care of the missing attribute business, but some program
would still refuse to run. I run CHKDSK (from a window, without /F, this
time) and got a few hundred messages like these:

SYS1324: C:\BORLANDC\BIN\BC.EXE is cross-linked on extended attribute 109.
161.
SYS1324: C:\COMM\PROCOMM\PROCOMM.EXE is cross-linked on extended attribute
162.
SYS1324: C:\OS!2_2.0_D\INFORMAT is cross-linked on extended attribute 155.
SYS1324: C:\OS2\DLL\HP\PCL\ACARTCO0.FNT is cross-linked on extended attribute
108.
SYS1324: C:\OS2\DLL\HP\PCL\BARCODE0.FNT is cross-linked on extended attribute
109.
SYS1324: C:\OS2\DLL\IBMNULL\IBMNULL.DRV is cross-linked on extended attribute
63.

Once again I tried the majestic help systen, which told me:

SYS1324: *** is cross-linked on extended attribute ***.

EXPLANATION: The extended attribute for this file or directory
is already in use by another file or directory on this disk.
ACTION: Do one of the following:
1. Make copies of the specified files (use the COPY command).
2. Delete the original files (use the ERASE command).
3. Check the files that you copied for validity, and edit them
if necessary.

This seems to work for most DOS (and other pre-OS/2) files, but usually
not for OS/2 generated files, of which many have this problem. (well, I
am not sure what advice 3 means, regarding EXE files)

Some of the files with the SYS1324 would run, but many would not. Also,
my HP LaserJet does not want to print from OS/2 (I get "no response from
printer" message), and I wonder if this has to do with having so many
printer associated files with the SYS1324 problem.

Please answer directly to me at glas@taunivm.bitnet or
glaser@vm.tau.ac.il

Yours
Shelly Glaser

The corrective service diskette (CSD #2217) for the IBM FTP/IP program
1.2.1 refresh seems to have fixed the LaMail problems, along with many
others. It should be available from IBM software support (800-237-5511
in USA--you need your IBM customer number). Otherwise contact your
nearest IBM Systems Engineer to request it. If you don't have the
version 1.2.1 "refresh", along with the CSD, you don't have the
"latest and greatest." You had to mail in your copy of the proof-of-
license to upgrade to the "refresh" version.

I'm surprised you have had problems with IBM's X server. I use it
frequently and haven't crashed the machine yet. However, just as there
is a CSD for the base 1.2.1 tcp/ip product, there is also a CSD for the X
server. You might consider getting these if you haven't already (CSD
UB02231).

I just got off the phone with IBM support. There is a new CSD available
for LaMail. By whatever mechanism is available to you, you should ask
for CSD UB02231. It is supposed to fix those intermitant crashes that
occur when deleting notes with the Alt+F3 key combination as well as some
other (unspecified) things.

It is normal that each users has its own WPS when using RIPL for OS/2.
(All important configuration files (CONFIG.SYS) can be individual.)
Those individual WPS's are fully configurable by each user and take up
around 590Kb. (That is for all individual files needed for RIPL of WPS,
LAN,CM,DBM and TCP/IP.)
Administrators can easily configure a model WPS, with custom colors,folders...,
and then make copies for the users. This makes RIPL workstations very
interesting. It is also very suitable for experiments with WPS since you can
always go back and create a new instance of your model WPS if your present
WPS was corrupted.

Dirk

On the OS2BBS there was a note in the Extended Services Communication Manager
section about using EPM to edit host data sets. EPM uses IND$FILE to download
(when you open the data set) and then uploads (when you save it). Very nice if
you like EPM.

The syntax is: EPM Hs:'filename'

where 'H' indicates a host session
's' is the host session
'filename' is the host file name using the host's naming conventions
for VM/CMS or MVS/TSO

I downloaded GS25OS2.ZIP from BLEKUL11, but it wouldn't run without
EMX.DLL, so I downloaded EMX08B.ZIP from the same place and extracted
the dll. Now it's telling me "Invalid option in EMXOPT" when I try to
run it. Any ideas? The only valid emx options, according to the
documentation are -r* and -t. I tried -t and it made no difference. Are
there more files I need to have around emx.dll and the contents of
gs25os2.zip?

All this on a fairly ordinary OS2 v2 on a Compaq, with novell LAN (but
I tried it on C disk as well with no improvement).

OS/2 LAN SERVER 3.0 AND NTS/2 BETA PROGRAMS

August 21, 1992

OVERVIEW

IBM is initiating a Beta program for future versions of their LAN
Systems products. The software is being made available for evaluation
and application development purposes and should NOT be used in pro-
duction.

The following products are currently available through the Beta
program:

* OS/2 LAN Server 3.0

* IBM Network Transport Services/2

Notice of this Beta program will also be posted on:

* CompuServe*
* PRODIGY*
* National Distribution Division National Support Center Bulletin
Board System (NSCBBS)
* OS/2 Bulletin Board System (OS2BBS)
* OS2ARENA Forum (IBMPC Disk)

OS/2 LAN SERVER 3.0

OS/2 LAN Server Version 3.0 Advanced is the first network server to
fully exploit the power of the OS/2* 2.0 operating system. New fea-
tures include:

* 386 HPFS, boosts overall performance

* Peer Services, allows a OS/2 requester to share resources with one
peer

* Redirected Install, delivers unattended install

* Greater than 254 sessions per domain, enhances adapter utilization

* 802.2 Virtual Device Driver (VDD), enables DOS 802.2 applications
to share an adapter with other DOS and OS/2 applications.

* OS/2 TCP/IP coexistence, supports a greater range of protocols

* Improved disk fault tolerance, Mirror without re-boot and Mir-
roring of the boot drive

* Local security, establishes additional security at the local work-
station

* Full Domain API, programming interface to the Domain Controller
Data Base (DCDB)

Complementing the OS/2 LAN Server are the DOS LAN Requester (DLR) and
the OS/2 Requester. The DOS LAN Requester includes the IBM LAN Support
Program Version 1.3, and has performance improvements over the pre-
vious DOS LAN Requester. The OS/2 Requester has redirected install
feature, 802.2 VDD, TCP/IP coexistence, and performance improvements.

IBM NETWORK TRANSPORT SERVICES/2 (NTS/2)

IBM Network Transport Services/2 provides:

* Programming interfaces (NetBios, IEEE 802.2 and Network Driver
Interface Specification (NDIS)) necessary for OS/2 2.0 LAN
enablement. NTS/2 provides the transport protocols and network
adapter software to run network applications.

* Integrated with NTS/2 is LAN Configuration Installation Distrib-
ution (CID) support which enables the LAN Adapter and Protocol
Support (LAPS) installation diskette images to be installed and
configured at a client workstation from a code server along with
other CID enabled products.

The installation process is performed by an individual who initi-
ates the installation process at their workstation and performs
other tasks such as removing/replacing diskettes when prompted and
re-IPLing the system when prompted. This individual would not be
required to know the responses to detailed product installation
questions.

The answers to the product installation questions are kept in
response files which contain specific responses to each installa-
tion question. The response files are unique to each product.
Each product provides either a utility or a model which the system
administrator can use to generate the response files.

A procedure file which may be tailored is set up by a system
administrator and stored on the code server. This procedure file
contains the commands which initiate product installations for
other CID enabled products such as IBM LAN Server 3.0.

* Novell* NetWare* Requester support is enabled via NTS/2 allowing
existing NetWare applications to access NetWare Servers through
the NDIS interface. The data from the NetWare requester applica-
tion is directed to the network adapter software associated with
the either a token-ring or Ethernet adapter.

* Using NTS/2, DOS applications written to the NetBios and IEEE
802.2 interfaces on OS/2 2.0 are supported. This virtual Local
Area Network (LAN) support enables these DOS applications to share
an adapter with other DOS and OS/2 applications running on the
same machine.

If you want diskettes and hard copy publications, do one of the fol-
lowing:

* In the U.S., call 1-800-IBM-3040 - You will be charged for reprod-
uction and distribution costs. Approximate costs will be $150 for
the LAN Server 3.0 Beta package and $45 for the NTS/2 Beta package.

* In Canada and Europe, contact your IBM Marketing Representative.

* Note: At this time, these Beta programs are not available in
Asia/Pacific.

TECHNICAL SUPPORT

Question and answer support for the Beta versions of these products
will be provided by IBM on a "best effort" basis. The following
forums are being created on the IBMPC disk for this support:

* OS2LAN30 FORUM - LAN Server 3.0

* OS2NTS2 FORUM - NTS/2

installed Perf2.0. It was a very interesting package. It did help
me make a 1 disk bootable, which was nice. It also suggested some
changes to my config.sys, which I let it make. But the main tool
said I had a 386 when I have a 486 (altho it is running a bit like a
386 in speed, tonight). And it couldn't find the speed. I think I
will let the Perf2.0 folks know by fax tonight. Dave

August 10, 1992
Proportional Software Corporation today announced the DCF/2
Disk Compression Facility for IBM's'@ OS/2@ Version 2.0.
In response to the needs of IBM OS/2 users, Proportional
Software has introduced the first dynamic disk compression
technology for OS/2 Version 2.0. The DCF/2, or Disk
Compression Facility/2 allows users to increase their local
physical disk storage without affecting applications software
or system behaviour.
On-the-fly disk compression using the DCF/2 results in 35%
to 70% additional disk space, depending on the types of
information on the disk and the level of compression selected.
The Proportional Software DCF/2 uses native OS/2 file
structures to compress standard file information into less
physical space -- resulting in making a hard disk appear
bigger than it really is!
According to Fred Schmidt, Sales Vice President at
Proportional, the typical OS/2 user requires over 50 MB of
physical disk space for the OS/2 operating system, it's
swapfile, and basic utilities. Even though OS/2 includes both
a complete DOS and Windows environment, this still means that
there is a real crunch for space when a user upgrades from a
DOS or Windows environment. The DCF/2 offers a quick, easy,
and simple solution to this problem.
Proportional Software is introducing the DCF/2 at $99.95
through December 31, 1992. The U. S. list price is $129.95.
We have a special price of $64.98 (50% of list for IBM
employees(for personal use, only) if they fax the order with a
copy of their IBM badge.

Regarding the 32-bit engine, I was told by IBM people (at Windows & OS/2
Conference in Boston two weeks ago) that the 32 bit engine and a few other
things are in beta now at a few sites. They should be ready in September for
distribution, and they are going to put all the CSD stuff together in an
upgrade package that will go over everything. No word on when that will be
available. (That will be on around 12 disks.)

The demos they gave were quite good. I wish I had the money for the toys they
were playing with. I noticed that they didn't tell us the speed of the
machines they were using, or any other characteristics of the hardware. They
were demonstrating integrated video and audio controlled on the desktop (Like
TV or VCR output put into a window on your desktop, and then typing into your
word processor and running database searches while the video & audio goes on
unaltered.)

These are August stats. It tells me that people are willing to buy
Excel 3.0 for their OS/2 systems instead of use Windows (or WIN-OS2)
to get Excel 4.0.

I think MS should re-think their applications strategy.

Now, if the stats are like this for earlier months (like April), then
it tells a different story, but I don't think Excel/2 has a 12.5%
market share before OS/2 2.0 got its foot in the door.

OS/2 vs NT features list, Revision 1.2

I've spent many hours digging this information out. I've tried
to be as unbiased as I can.

If you feel the need to bash either OS using this list, please do
so in a separate thread.

If you have correction/additions/deletetions please jump right in. If
you're not sure and don't want to suggest it publically, e-mail me...
If I don't know for certain already, I have access to nearly all the
available docs for OS/2 and NT.

If you know of a feature that one or the other will add in the future AND
you have a time frame. Send it and the time frame along.
Please specify the source of the information.

I hope to keep this thread having a high information content level, but
we shall see, this group isn't the best place to attempt such things.
Below some of the features I've added explainations. Please tell me
if more are needed. Also chide me (via e-mail) if I'm too preachy.

Also.... this is a list of features in the BASIC system package.

If someone would like to make a list of features for the LAN Server
OS/2 add-on, that would be great. Please try to find out the
list prices for these features... I only know the ones from memory
a few months ago, and so don't really trust my numbers.

I do know the following:
NT list price: < $500. (Source: NT dev conf, InfoWorld)
OS/2 2.0 list price: $195 (Source: Programmer's connection
OS/2 2.0 Multimedia add-on: $149 (Source: product announcement
posted to USENET.)
OS2 TCP/IP Base Kit* $200 (Source: product announcement
found on ftp-os2.)

* OS/2 2.0's TCP/IP Base Kit contains more programs
than comes with NT. (NT comes with only "client" programs.)
However programming OS/2's TCP/IP requires a $500 programmers
toolkit, and this ability comes with NT's SDK for free. Thus
I pretend it's an even swap. Obviously for some, even many users
this isn't the case. As NT has Berkeley sockets I suspect
that freeware based on Berkeley's daemons will soon appear and make
even this a moot point.

OS/2's and Windows NT Multimedia support seem to be equivalent.
I have only seen OS/2's MM feature list though, so feel free to
correct this if you've seen both.

Features currently in OS/2 2.0 but not in Windows NT

Object Oriented Shell (WorkPlace Shell)

Great DOS support

Mediocre Windows 3.0 support (NT's is currently poor).

Is actually released.

Features currently in Windows NT but not in OS/2 2.0
System tables dynamically extensible.
In other words no arbitrary limits of 256 processes or
1024 open files, etc.

Quota and and Statistics hooks for most system objects.

Full symmetric multiprocessing support.

Generic wait on multiple events/semaphores of different types.
This is helps prevent deadlocks. Consider the classic
deadlock example: Two processes, P1 and P2, both want
to access tape drives A and B. P1 locks A and waits for
B, P2 locks B and waits for A. Deadlock.
With the generic wait facility you say wake me when
I have both A and B. This mechanism prevents many
deadlock problems.

Multiple growable heaps.
A process can have more than one heap. That heap can be
grown. Classic example of use is you have a bunch
of data elements that are used in one part of your program
that needs to be dynamically allocated, but before
the end you no longer need that set of data and need to
free the memory. Rather than free each element, allocate
a heap just for that data. Do the allocations from that
heap. At the end free the heap.

Automatic stack expansion.
I am certain that OS/2 does not do this.
OS/2 has you specify a limit on the stack size, but allocates
only one page of the stack at a time, using a guard page
technique to expand the stack. When you hit the
stack size limit your process dies. Why they went most
of the way, instead of all the way, I really cannot say.

Global VM/File Buffer Cache.
This is a common feature in most modern operating systems.
It apparently makes disk consistency easier to manage.

All but 60K kernel is pageable. (Microkernel design)

Memory mapped files

Asynchronous I/O
OS/2 1.X had this feature but for unexplained reasons
dropped it in 2.0. While you can do it with threads,
you can also multi-task in DOS... all you have to do
is write the code that intercepts the timer interrupt
and swaps the processes.

Platform independent device driver support.
Platform independence means independent of the hardware
on which NT runs. The device driver people at the NT
developers conference did not seem to believe this
at first either... but after a long set of questions seemed
convinced this was more or less possible.
(A smaller head file contains the few differences
that are necessary between platforms.)

Dynamic loadable/unloadable file system and device drivers.

Generalized Registry. (database as replacement for '.ini' files)
Rather than have a "config.sys" and other initialization files,
all system data is put into a tree-structured database.j

Pen Support.

Windows 3.1 support.

Fully 32-bit drivers.

SDK has C++

GUI
Fully 32-bit API
Fast client/server approach.
Separate queues per process.
PM and Windows 3.X have one message queue for all
applications.
Designed to help accellerators.
The internal routines have been changes so that
drawing commands are buffered and sent to the
underlying graphics drivers in a manner that
can take advantage of graphics accellerator cards.

OLE

Good _published_ debug hooks.

Security
C2 level (not certified)
ACL's for all objects.
Logons.
E-Mail API (X.500, can use X.400 as a transport)
B2 hooks
Advanced form of setuid().
This allows servers with appropriate privileges
to impersonate a client's identity to
so that work can safely be performed on behalf
of a client.

RPC
DCE support
OLE integrated with RPC
RPC has corresponding LPC
NTFS
Fast Recovery (CHKDSK gigabyte volumes in a few seconds.)
High Reliability
Hard Links
Case-Sensitive
Extensible Attributes
Automatic 8.3 names
If you give NTFS a name that does not fit the 8.3
pattern it will automatically generate a unique
8.3 filename so that DOS apps can see it also.
ACLS
B-tree directories.
Volume striping
UPS support.

Multimedia
Audio
Waveform
MIDI
CD-source
Media Control Interface.
High-speed file streaming.
Async event controllable.

Networking
TCP/IP
Peer-peer file and printer sharing.
Ability to support multiple vendors as transports
w/common admin.
Good network admin facilities.
SNMP
Berkely sockets.
Named pipes.
Event logging.

Fast Hyper-text Help System. (OS/2's is much slower.)
I've used both, NT's is faster, though it
has less features than OS/2's.
NT's is of course a variant of Windows 3.1's
help program (which is different from
the Windows 3.0 one).

Developers provided with a common installation program.
More SuperVGA drivers.

OS/2 2.0 will add the following in September/October
Catch up to NT by having Windows 3.1 support.
Catch up to NT by adding a 32-bit GUI.
Catch up to NT by allowing 32-bit drivers.
Rumored to slim-down such that it might properly fit in 4 megs.

Windows NT will add the following in September/October
Catch-up to OS/2 in 16-bit Windows 3.0 compatibility.
Smarter, easier to use OLE, first step toward Cairo.
POSIX (1003.1 -- the system calls)
Win32s (Run NT programs under Windows 3.1)
Remote booting.
Remote installation and maintenance support.
NTFS
Symlinks
Sparse File

At an IBM OS/2 seminar this evening, one of the presenters told us that the
news in IBM's internal forums today was that the Win3.1 support in the CSD is
going to also include support for those Win3.x programs that will not run
under Win3.1.......

So, Win-OS/2 is more compatible with Windows than Microsoft! Don't forget
WinOS/2 also runs Windows 2.x apps as well, which MS doesn't run.

Sounds like a better Windows than Windows, to me.

Also, the CSD will be shipping "real soon now"..........:-)

I think adding the following to the previous stuff will do it:

'buildmenuitem default 1990 1998 Latex_this 0 0 rx latexme'

if you create a LatexMe.erx in your path containing:

/* Start an OS/2 session to call LATEX against the current file */
'extract /filename'
'os2 e:\emtex\latex.cmd' filename.1

Actually, a more generic version would be to have the menu command be:
rx execute e:\emtex\latex.cmd
and have EXECUTE.ERX do:
/* Start an OS/2 session to the given command against the current file */
'extract /filename'
'os2' arg(1) filename.1

Enhancing this to allow plugging the filename in at an arbitrary point in
the command string (perhaps replacing a placeholder) is left as an exercise.

Yes, I got an offer from Borland just the other day for this "beta"
program. They announced that they had reduced the price substantially
from the previous beta. They hadn't reduced it much, since now you
don't get a copy of the release compiler, just a discount coupon.
What an incentive...

I would love it if Borland would pay to Beta test some of my
software. The unmitigated gall. I'll just bet Borland pays
Microsoft for the opportunity of beta testing Windows NT!

Something similar (I don't remember exactly) happened to me.
I created a program object for MAHJONGG.EXE (PM app') from ftp-os2
using a template. When I tried to start MahJongg, the WPS
and/or the program object was fouled up. This included the object
being undeletable. I tried a great variety of actions on it,
including changing it's settings, moving it to a FAT drive
and destroying the EAs there altogether, but that object was immortal.
Well, nearly. Finally I succeded by:

1. Moving it onto A:\ by:

a) Selecting it

b) Selecting Move... from it's menu

c) Selecting the Path (not drive) tab

d) Entering A:\ (or just A: -- I can't remember)

2. Moving it to a subdirectory on A: the same way as above

3. Deleting that directory (I don't remember which way)

Then it was gone which I verified by a Search.
I think I also reformatted the disk and verified
that there weren't any EAs left.

I hope this helps.

Maybe this is another item for the FAQ/a separate "problem FAQ"!

Best wishes,

Horst

Subject: Error in OS2KRNL patch ? (was: PMV2001 memory error)

After re-installing OS/2, Extended Services, Lan Requester, TCP/IP and
applying the patches I found at hobbes.nmsu.edu, I have -at last|- dis-
covered the cause of the out of memory errors I experienced.

It seems that the errors only occur after installing the latest OS2KRNL
patch (the one I found at hobbes in pub/os2/2.0/patches, in file
os2krnl.zoo). When I reset the original kernel, everything turns back to
normal.

This seems a rather serious problem (bug?) to me. Beware...

This is becomming a FAQ. The "June CSD" was a misinterpretation of
information. IBM scheduled the release of "Ultimedia PM extensions"
for June 30. It was released ON TIME. Some people picked up on this
release date and assumed it was a CSD. I've spoken to IBM twice on
the subject. Both times, IBM indicated to me that Windows 3.1 was the
primary focus of the next rev of OS/2, but refused any other information.

When asked for the release date, both of them indicated "in the fall",
when proded, they both said "Late August, Early September". I'm assuming
we will all hear something REAL in September some time. As with all
net.info, your milage may vary.

People whining about the lack of "June CSD" aren't living in the real
world. Net rumors aren't facts, if you want facts, call the source.

Well I talked to an OS/2 rep today trying to solve a problem I'm
having getting black, frozen screens and no desktop access when
exiting Ami Pro 3.0 after editing large (+40K) files. I asked him
about the September CSD and he hemmed and haughed and finally said
that it was originally planned for September but was now probably
delayed until November (which is what those down under have been
hearing too).

While this news disappoints me, I'd rather know they were going to
release something good and solid _later_ than something buggy sooner.
I just hope they don't wait too long. In the meantime I'm happy being
able to get patches for my problems.

Try opening your print object (Open -> Settings), finding the page
with the list of drivers (two windows, with icons in the upper window
and one selected icon in the lower window). Click on the IBMNULL
driver in the upper window with mouse button two, and select Open ->
Settings. Change the form feed control to None. Close everything up.

That just might do the trick.

I think it's because of the new kernal (6.412). A lot of people have been
reporting this. It seems like it fixed the swapfile-doesn't-shrink problem
with a swapfile-doesn't-grow-problem-and-causes-out-of-memory-errors problem.

Hmmmmmm.
Do you have any further info? RACF (at least on MVS, where I'm used to working
with it) is a very powerful and flexible security system, but it's a bit
intimidating for the first-time admin. It'll be interesting to see how they
adapt it to OS/2.

Here is how I understand it (I might very well be wrong):

WPS (or PMShell) runs two processes. One to perform all the WPS
functions and the other to make sure that the first one didn't bite the
dust. For example - lets say Word just sat there ... CTRL-ESC does
nothing and clicking does nothing - the second process would detech this
and then ask you if you want to end this application or it would just
restart the workplace shell (like if you are manipulating tons of
objects at once and the WPS chokes on it - it would restart).

The XGA and VGA 32-bit GRE's will be released in the next 4-8 weeks. The SVGA
version will follow soon after, with the 8514/a bringing up the rear. This
last will be around the end of the year - or just after the beginning of '93.

I have gleened this info from various conversations with sundry IBMers over
the past several weeks. They are busy using the new GRE's themselves and seem
to be awaiting the official release announcement.

One did point out that the existing 16-bit GRE is written in assembler, while
the new ones are written in C.....so the speed improvement isn't as great as
you might expect it to be if the 32-bit version was written in assembler.

They said it was clearly faster and would be an improvment.

Steve

P.S. It's been less than a month since CSD 11. I put that up on 08/08.

DCF/2 compression compares favourably with the other
programs, like Stacker(TM), Superstor(TM), and Doubledisk(TM)
that do similiar disk compression for DOS.
