Comments on T Sipples comments on Faxit. I reviewed Version 1.10 of
this product. It was awful. I was proposing to bundle it with hardware
and sell them as a package, and I felt the PMFAX product was so weak, I
could not in good consience sell it. I have also heard good things about
10.6 (the version Sipples reviewed), so I can only assume the product has
been substantially "enhanced" and wrecked recently. I phoned in all the
problems I had, and was told that they were recognized as problems but
would probably not get fixed this year, or early next. So I am left
waiting for good fax code. For those who want a fax/data modem, I have
a couple at VERY reasonable prices. Dave

Subject: PMR 9X377 update
As you may recall, I had a problem with printing from OS/2: I got a
"printer does not respond" message and no printout beyond the spooler (no
physical printout). I tried several things at your, and others'
suggestions, and then, got the internet address for IBM's support. The
problem was found to be the default IRQ setting on my Sound Blaster Pro
card. Both LPT1 and the Sound Blaster default to IRQ7. As suggested by
IBM, changing the IRQ jumper on the Sound Blaster card (to IRQ5) did the
magic: My HP LJ-IIIp prints beautifully from OS/2 now. I enclose here
part of the message I got from IBM.
Thanks for your help - you were almost at the right answer!

You can hold down Ctrl-Shift-F1 as soon as the white screen appears
for 20 secs or so.
I wanted a standard desktop every time for our students, so I shutdown
in the required state, made a copy of os2.ini and os2sys.ini (using
the distribution diskettes, then put a couple of copy commands in config.sys
to copy these files to the working ones on every boot.
It seems to work so far!

If you're thinking of SAS on OS/2 this may make you rethink.
We shelled out a lot of money to buy SAS 6.06 for OS/2, and frankly it
works fine on a PS/2 with a VGA display. On our XGA machines it would
only work with OS.2 1.3, however.
When you start SAS under OS/2 2.0 on a 8514A adapter or on an XGA
adapter, it complains about not being able to find a font file.
When asked, SAS Institute said it was a know problem and would be
fixed in SAS release 6.08. There would be no fix for 6.06.
I have no experience with SVGA displays, but the combination SAS 6.06,
OS/2 2.0 and high resolution displays doesn't work for us. Any
suggestions are of course appreciated.

True - but SAS Inst. has a workaround. Use the courier font rather than
the default font. This doesn't work for ATI ultra graphics cards but then
again you can use VGA instead of 8514A drivers and that works.

SAS 6.08 should be out around the end of the year for OS/2 and for the first
time for Windows.
Rethinking, seems a bit extreme in view of the much faster performance and
power of SAS 6.06. Right now, SAS 6.04 for DOS is the only other game
in town for PC's and it is clearly inferior.

I hope I've helped, but if you're disappointed, I would call SAS Inst. and
complain. You could also demand Beta versions of SAS 6.08.

Subject: Re: running SAS on an XGA monitor...
I ran into a similar problem installing SAS 6.06 on a Gateway 486DX2/50
EISA machine. We have an ATI Grapics Ultra video card and when I
installed OS/2 2.0, I went for the 8514/A mode. Here's what I remember
about the SAS installation. After installing the core an error box
popped up (don't remember the message). I closed the box and SAS
"aborted" the installation. I called SAS tech support and the fellow
that I talked to immediately recognized the problem. It seems that
the bug involves the available fonts and the default font that SAS
wants to use. SASLOAD had actually completed the installation of the
core programs but had to bail out when it could not find the correct
font. To successfully complete the installation I just added the
following line to the config.sas file:
-font Courier
This parameter is case sensitive so it has to be typed in exactly
as shown above. After doing this, I just started SAS and went to the
help menu at the topmost menu bar in the display manager and selected
the install option. From there, I just installed the remaining SAS
modules (i.e., Base, Stat, IML, and Graph). From then on, everything
went fine. I ran all the test streams without error and have even
printed out some of the graphics stuff to an HP LaserJet III.
I think SAS 6.06 for OS/2 is a great product, vastly superior to PC-SAS.
I've heard that SAS 6.08 for a OS/2 2.0 is in beta (32-bit SAS for
Intel machines!) and should be out within a few months.

It depends on what graphic driver you use. Today seamless windows works
only on Standard VGA (640*480) and on Trident SVGA (800*600). This will
change when the 32-bit graphics engine is out (late october / early
november).

Thanks to Philip Parker for this offering. I wish to point out,
however, that the administrator of the archive at New Mexico State has
requested that users employ the ftp-os2.nmsu.edu address instead of
hobbes.nmsu.edu. There are plans to switch the archive to a different

Organization: Univ. of Texas at Dallas
Hello.
I just wrote a lengthy message to someone who was confused as to what
IBM intends to do to OS/2 in 1992, and after I finished it I realized
that this information would be helpful to a lot of people.
I have obtained all of this information from various IBM'ers who are
very trustworthy for you non-believers. :)
(in addition, nothing in this message is that outrageous)
(PLEASE note that IBM is only PLANNING to get Winos2 v3.1 out in December,
their has been no kind of official announcement.)
(Though from what I hear I wouldn't be surprised at *all* if it is
released in 1992)
Here goes:
===============================================
Hello.
I hope I can clear up some of the confusion you have.
The current wide-release beta that everyone has is intended for people
to help IBM work out bugs with Winos2 v3.1.
The 32-bit GRE included with the beta is not release code, but the beta
is still intended mainly as a testing for Winos2 v3.1.
The SERVICE PACK(SP) that IBM is going to release sometime soon. (They
are currently targeting the end of October, I *personally* believe that
the *latest* IBM will release the SP will be Fall Comdex, which starts
November 16. Why? Because IBM knows that it needs a finished Service
Pack+OS/2 package to hype/promote/give away at Fall Comdex.
(They'll have to show a strong OS/2 available know in case the demo
of OS/2 3.0 running on different processors crashes!) :)
Next, the Service Pack was rumoured to be at 14 disks about 1 week ago.
I'm betting it will be no larger than 20 disks. It will be available
free electronically, or direct from IBM for a media(& maybe shipping)
charge.
The SP will install on top of a OS/2 2.0 GA installation, NOT on top
of the beta. It *will* install on top of the beta, but IBM will not
help anybody with problems they encounter from mixing beta & release
code, and IBM has said they are not responsible for any problems that
result from mixing beta & release code.
IBM *really* wants to make the SP a quality product. They want to make
it so that someone that has OS/2 2.0+Service Pack will have a SOLID
operating system.
It is currently said their are over 250 bug fixes included in the SP.
The reason it is called a Service Pack and not a CSD is because it
includes more than bug fixes. These extras will include:
32-bit GRE
performance enhancements (especially on systems with 4megs)
video drivers (Tseng ET4000 for sure)
IBM has said that before 1993 it will release 32-bit, 256 color, VGA,
SVGA, and 1024X768 video drivers for the following:
Tseng ET4000,
ATI Wonder,
Paradise,
Cirrus,
Video-7.
IBM will also release 32-bit, 256 color drivers for 8514/A before 1993,
and 32-bit XGA-2 drivers that support all of XGA-2's features.
I'm not sure if they are going to release XGA drivers, or if the XGA-2
drivers will work on XGA adapters. If the XGA-2 drivers will *not*
work on XGA cards, then I'm sure IBM is planning on releasing 32-bit,
256 color XGA drivers that support all of XGA's features.
About video drivers, IBM will give the source code for them to their
respective companies and they can do with them whatever they want to.
(ATI can modify their to support the Mach chip on their Vantage and
Ultra cards if they want to)
FINALLY(whew!) IBM is planning on releasing a Winos2 v3.1 "Pack" in
December. This will be like the Service Pack in that it is not a
program unto itself, it *must* be installed on an OS/2+Service Pack
installation.(or OS/2+32-bit GRE installation to be more specific)
I don't know if IBM will charge for the Winos2 v3.1 pack. I don't
think they will.
To offer another opinion, I think that after IBM completes Winos2 v3.1,
they will repackage OS/2 as OS/2 2.x (either 2.01 or 2.1) and sell it
as OS/2 2.0 GA+Service Pack+Winos2 v3.1 all as one 20 to 30 disk product.
Anyways, I hope that this clears things up for you, and that you take
the time to correct other people if they have the wrong ideas about
OS/2 in 1992.
IBM *really* wants OS/2 to succeed...
Thanks.
============================================
That's all, and I mean ALL!
PLEASE don't email me as I have NO more information. (thanks)

In early 1993 I plan to release a program (PM2You?) for remote operation

As the program will be an add-on to the OS2You program, you can communicate
over async. modems or LAN/WANs using Named Pipes, NetBIOS or Mailslots.
The beta program will begin in December, if everything goes as planned.
If anyone is interested in participating in this beta program, please
send an email. The beta program will be very small, and therefore registered
OS2You owners will be priorited. When finally released, the program will
be shareware.

I saw OS/2 with the new CSD running today at an IBM meeting. It was
running on a new PS/2 mod 77 (486-33/66) with xga-2. They have added
some new features along with the bug fixes. There is a deinstall
application. It pops up a screen much like the selective install
screen that we saw when first installing OS/2. It lets you select
features you want to de-install (nice touch). Also there was a
program to show a detailed configuration of the system. On the
PS/2 it indicated the boards installed IRQs used and just about
anything you'd want to know about the machine. There is a new
way to install printers which was simpler than the current method
of dragging a driver to the desktop.
I took a look at Solitare in xga-2. It looked much nicer than on my
VGA system. The cards don't have that "blurred" appearance. I think
there are a number of other new features that were added.

Hi all.
I installed the nameserver that comes with the sample code. Everything
works fine except the zone transfer. Any other nameserver that requests
a zone transfer simply gets nothing. Any other information is correct. 8-(
Does anyone know what's wrong with it or has someone an ibm tcp/ip 1.2.1
nameserver running that allows zone transfer?
thanx 4 any help:

You are missing 'nxfer.exe'. It was left out of the original release but
is included in the latest CSD for tcp/ip.

C Set/2 CSD Level 22 is on ftp-os2.nmsu.edu now, I believe (check
/pub/uploads and below). So is the WorkFrame/2 CSD (ditto). I'm not
sure about the Toolkit.

OS/2 2.0 Service Pack Not Recommended
Submitted by OS/2 Information Svcs, 3597, CORE at WATSON
On Tuesday, IBM released a "service pack" for OS/2 2.0 that contains
a number of bug fixes, as well as an updated 32 bit graphics engine.
OS/2 Information Services recommends that you do ** NOT ** install the
service pack at this time. Although some significant bugs are fixed,
the service pack introduces many new problems that may adversely affect
your system. Some of the more serious problems include:
o The OS/2 swap file (SWAPPER.DAT) requires much more space than
previously.
o On some systems, overall system performance is worse. On some
8514/A (BGA) systems, screen update performance is worse.
o The Image Adapter/A is not supported. Installing the service
pack on an IA/A system will at best require manual intervention to
get the system to boot.
o Various problems with Extended Services (Communications Manager)
and LAN Services (LAN Requester) have been reported. CM and or
LAN may not work after the service pack has been installed.
o If you use printers on an OS/2 2.0 LAN Server, the server must
also be updated with the service pack for printing to work properly.
If the server is updated, ** ALL ** requesters using that server
must also be updated.
o After installing the service pack, you will have to reinstall the
service pack if you update your system configuration via selective
install, or if you install a new OS/2 or WIN-OS/2 printer driver.
Finally, it is not possible to remove the pack once it has been
installed; if it causes you problems, you will need to reinstall OS/2.
*** WARNING *** WARNING *** WARNING *** WARNING *** WARNING ***
We have removed the Service Pack from the BBS, and will be replacing with
another version shortly. We aporogize for the confusion and any
inconvenience caused.

Subject: Stability of IBM OS/2 INETD
I'am running IBM TCP/IP 1.2.1 at the latest CSD (& OS/2 2.0 & LS 3.0 & ES 1.0)
and it seems that my INETD process will stop working after some time (<24h).
It will just stop to respond to any open requests without any apperant reason.
Am I the only one experiencing this ?
Any hints or solutions ?
Regards,
Dirk
