Subject: follow up on the comp.os.os2.* groups

Hello again, after three weeks of silence, this is a new issue of the
discussion forum. (The last one was the 920402 issue). One of the
reasons for such a large time frame interval is the flood of articles
on the Usenet groups. The bashing, speculating, gossip and other
time taking flood of messages is of such large volume, that following
these groups is no fun anymore. For this issue I VERY QUICKLY scanned
the subject lines of over 2000 messages to select 3 of those, just to
have "something" of these groups.
I would like to suggest, that all those of you, who read the Usenet
groups too, could help me by mailing interesting articles to me. I
will continue to try to scan these groups, and present an overview
to all of you who - amongst others - expect such a service from this
forum, however it's getting a bit to much for us alone to do so.
Oh, yes, this mailing goes directly to 1120 readers or redistribution
points, which makes the OS2 list by far one of the largest LISTSERV/
LISTEARN lists.
Enjoy reading.

Some of the available files come in - what is called - a package. If
you request such package you will automatically receive all necesarry
files. The zipxxe (XXencoded ZIP) files that you will receive must be
concatenated into one large ZIPXXE file by means of the COPY command.
(example : copy x.zipxxe1 + x.zipxxe2 x.zipxxe)

To use this large ZIPXXE file you must first XXdecode (We recommend our
own version of XXdecode which works under OS/2) and UNZIP (We recommend
PKZIP also under OS/2) it.

Note: Use PKUNZIP -d to unzip !!

These files are distributed AS IS, we can not guarantee anything about
their working.

From: Charley Murphy <URMC@MARIST>
Subject: Executing DOS from OS/2 Workstation

In reply to Hans Schoone's problem of executing a DOS program on an
OS/2 network workstation.

We had more problems with v 1.3 than with 2.0. We have been testing version
2.0 LAN Requester and Server functions for some time now, and we found that
the best way to handle the situation is to use .CMD files for all the OS/2
stations. Imbed the NET USE commands in this file before the DOS .EXE file.

Second, when you define your application icon set it up for an OS/2 session
either full screen or windowed.

When you launch the application the NET USE will initiate, because it is a
OS/2 function, the DOS .EXE will open a DOS session and the program will
load. If you use a NET USE /D at the end of the .CMD file, when the program
terminates it will return to the OS/2 session and delete the virtual drive.

The only program which would not load COMMAND.COM automatically, was
Wordperfect 5.1. In this case we loaded COMMAND.COM manually in the .CMD
file and all worked fine.

Hope this helps.

We have found this method far more convenient, easier to use and more
manageable, only one file, than any thing which we were able to do in
V. 1.3. From a network function, Version 2.0 definitly made major steps
and addressed a need we had. My compliments!!!

Once we found this to work we decided to rewrite our .CMD files into .COM
files using C++. This would give better information hiding as far as the
virtual drives were concerned, and better security.

Standard Dislaimer in effect.....

Subject: How about a profile?

Dear friends --

Please respond to me personally and not to the list. (Please see below)

I am currently putting together a database of discussion groups and locations
for both faculty review and student awareness. I'm collecting as much
information about each group as possible from as many subscribers as possible
in order to get a well-rounded description.

Please take about 5 or 7 seven minutes to type up a profile of the information
that is "hashed" out on this discussion list. Include as much information as
you would like. The more that participate from the list the better.

We may even make this annotated collection of group lists available
through the network system from TWU.

Your cooperation in this endeavor is greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,

So, there you have it folks! 32-bit comm program and BBS software in

Subject: OS/2 2.0 in a Network Environment ?

Hello,

I'm new to this list, so please forgive if I pose any questions that
may have been answered before...

I have read the OS/2 FAQ list (1.9z), but there are still some points
that are still a little vague to me.

First, it it said in the FAQ list that OS/2 2.0 was 'on the
shelves'. Well, as far as Germany is concerned, it seems *not* to be,
although IBM does quite some advertising here...
If somebody from IBM Germany is listening, any comments would be
greatly appreciated.

Still, we are considering whether we could make OS/2 2.0 the OS of
our LAN workstations (I'm talking about 60 or 70 machines, roughly) .
We are running a File Server under Netware 3.11, and we are using
FTP's PCTCP to connect to other machines such as UNIX boxes.

So my major concern goes about how well OS/2 2.0 would fit into this
environment, because if we switch to OS/2 we need the same basic
functionality as we have now:

1. Can I start a Novell session in a DOS box using the Netware Shells
for DOS, or is the Netware Requestor a must? Do I need them both ?
2. Would PCTCP run in a DOS box ?
3. How does OS/2 2.0 handle the network adaptor? Can the old DOS
hardware and packet drivers still be used? If not, where could I
get the appropriate drivers from ?
4. Could I start a Netware Lite 'server' in a DOS box ? Has anybody
been as venturous as to try this ?
5. Might be a stupid question: Could I run Windows 3.1 (win.com,
that is) in standard mode in a DOS box ?
6. Assuming that (5.) doesn't work: Are there already any price tags
for the Windows 3.1 compatibility announced for the summer ?

Sorry, I wouldn't pose some of the above questions if I already had
my test copy of OS/2 2.0. But as I haven't, any comments would be
greatly appreciated.

Thanks for Your patience,

This is the 3rd time this has happened since installing OS/2 2.0. The
SWAPPER.DAT file somehow takes over the partition it is on. The size
ofthe file stays the same, but the size of the partition is reduced by
10 Mbytes! The 1st time the system recovered. The 2nd and 3rd time,
all was lost and the machine had to be turned off. On rebooting the
2nd and 3rd times, the CHDSK program indicated an allocation error
with the SWAPPER.DAT file. I should note that on these last two
attempts there was an NFS mounted drive loaded to an AIX remote host.

Is it just my configuration? Are there others with this problem?

Bug or feature? In OS/2 2.0 DOS boxes, after using DOS function
(decimal) 67 to hide a file (or directory), register AX is set to 2 --

Subject: IBM LAN Server/Token Ring

I am looking for some help in defining our LAN's. We are using IBM's LAN
Server, Token Ring, NETBIOS, 8209 Source Routing Bridges and VTAM. We also
have a fiber backbone and an IBM 3090.

The problem we are running into is we want to make all of our LAN's appear
as 1 virtual LAN to the user, the shouldn't be required to know what the
Domain name there files are, or the Domain they are currently on.

To do this and support all of the campus users we will exceed the 255
NETBIOS sessions allowed (potential users could be upto 1000) on the server.

I know TCP/IP uses a name server and routes to correct segments from there.
At this time IBM's APPN is just a concept.

So What do we do now?

I am curious as to how others in the same situation are handling this. Any
help would be greatly appreciated.

Looks like we Britishers have been targetted by Microsoft. In the last few

Subject: Sending OS/2 2.0 problem reports to an official IBM point.

In the OS/2 SE, ES and LS shrink wrap packages, IBM says there are three
methods by which U.S. individuals can officially report problems to IBM.

- OS/2 BBS - a new BBS just starting. It has connect time charges.
- 800-237-5511
- Compuserve email.

There are threee methods to obtain OS/2 2.0 help (beyond reporting problems):

- OS/2 BBS - a new BBS just starting. It has connect time charges.
- 800-772-2227 (HelpWare)
- Compuserve IBMOS2 and OS2DEV forums

Since Internet/Usenet end-users can send mail to Compuserve users, it is
possible for you to also submit OS/2 problem reports. I did not ask IBM
if this is allowed but:

- I don't see a rule against it
- There is a new IBM
- In any case the problem reporter is an OS/2 2.0 end-user and IBM does
want to support them.

Attached is an OS/2 problem report form you can use to report OS/2 2.0
SE, ES and LS problems.

When you are ready to send this OS/2 Problem Report, send the form to:

Base problems - 76711.610@compuserve.com
ES/LS problems - 76711.611@compuserve.com

Subject: OS/2 2.0 Installation problem and another question

I have just received OS/2 2.0 (GA) last week and tried to install it on my
Magitronic 25MHz 386sx with a 210 mb hard drive (w/ 3.5 in. diskettes)

The symptom is as follows:

1) Boots off of installation disk just fine. Prompts to install disk #1...
says "Loading" down on the bottom of the screen under the OS/2 logo.

It then clears the screen and says "Loading" at the top of the screen
for about 2 sec., accesses the A: drive and aborts with a message saying that
the file "COUNTRY.SYS" cannot be located.

I went through IBM support and the recommendation was to low-level my hard
disk (pain in the %$$&) run FDISK, reload DOS and try again.

I did as recommended with the same results. I'm about to call IBM again but
I thought that it might help to send a report of this incident to the list in
order to possibly get some other answers.

I really want this to work... THIS IS NOT INTENDED TO BASH IBM as I'm also
a stockholder and want this to be a sucessful venture for the company.

Any comments would be appreciated....

Also: Because I couldn't load OS/2 to my 25MHZ machine. I loaded it on my
other machine a "Computerworld" 386DX 20 mhz machine (No clone bashing please!)

Everything went OK. I would just like to ask if 4 minutes is a long time to
wait to boot into the Workplace Shell.

My machine has a 80mb Seagate drive with about 20 MB free.

Both machines have 8MB of memory installed!

Final note: When I get the SX up and running under OS/2, I will certainly
buy the second copy required!!!

Final question (sorry!): If there are any Desqview users that have converted
to OS/2 2.0, I would like to hear of your experiences. I'm a developer of
DBASE / Clipper apps (amongst other languages) and want to convert my 4 DOS
sessions to an OS/2 scheme.

Sorry about the length of this... Again thanks in advance for any comments..

.. Joel

Try this: DIR /O-D according to the manual, it should give
you a listing, sorted by date, in the REVERSE order. Ok, it works
well. Now do the same with:

SET DIRCMD=/O-D
DIR

You don't see the same list, do you?

The DIRCMD environment variable works well otherwise, except when you have
a dash - the 'opposite' option. Am I missing something? -turgut

No. Memory utilities do not work correctly with 2.0, since there is
no way to allocate only physical memory, nor any function to get the
amount of free ram left. I have seen two types of memory utilities
written for 1.x. They either ran from the command line and
allocated as much memory as possible, or they reported the largest
free contiguous space. The former works horrendously on 2.0 since
the computer will try to allocate your entire hard drive space to
this one program, this takes quite a bit of time, before OS/2 is
able to kill it. The latter just gives wrong answers since the 386 and
2.0 don't care whether memory is contiguous.

Turgut:

You can use TN3270.EXE instead of PMANT. You lose the config menus, but
you can use a CMD file with:

MODE CO80,44
TELNET ...

That sets the screen to 44 lines mode, and TELNET detects it, so it adjust
to that size, minus one (getting you 43 lines for telnet). Have fun.

I disagree strongly with the statement that OS/2 is NOT CPU intensive!
At home I have a 16MB 16MHz 386 machine and at work I have a 14MB 25MHZ
486. For routine operations such as running PMWord, OS/2 Excel and switching
between tasks, both systems MOST CERTAINLY are CPU limited. On the other hand
I am happy with the performance of my 16MHz machine, but switching to a
faster processor DOES make a difference. In case it matters, both machines
are PS/2 MCA.

Last I heard from my IBM SE was that capability should be released in
the September/October timeframe (maybe sooner if they get it done! :-).
BTW, if you want to access the LAN adapter from only one DOS box, you
can be removing all references to LAN access from OS/2's CONFIG.SYS and
loading the normal LAN support drivers in the DOS box (but why? ;-).

It is widely rumoured that IBM fill provide a free update called a CSD
in June that will add Win 3.1 support to OS/2 and provide a full 32-bit
graphic engine currently being developed in cooperation with Micrographix.
IBM showed WinOS/2 3.1 capability at COMDEX the day after the real Windows
3.1 was released. Notice though that there are no Win 3.1 only applications
currently available except for the applets that come with Win 3.1. You
can use the Multimedia and OLE DLLs under Windows 3.0 and WinOS/2.

In response to your second question, the answer is no--Windows 3.1
will not run under OS/2 2.0 since Microsoft broke their own DPMI
specification by making Windows 3.1 (and 3.0 in standard and enhanced mode)
run under only its own DPMI server and not anothers (like OS/2s).

The May BYTE has a good article on the DX2 architecture, including a
darn nice component diagram (why can't more authors include these?). I
don't believe we would see "clock-doubling chips" if Intel weren't so
impatient with the length of time OEMs are taking to produce 50 Mhz
and 66 Mhz DX systems. Intel feels the competitive pressure of other
486 clone manufacturers, and has planned an interim solution.

I like Barry Nance's analogy of the 486's Bus Interface Unit (BIU) to an
automotive transmission's "gear reduction." The car engine combustion
rotates the engines's crankshaft at a speed (RPM) based upon the rate of
induction of fuel and air charge. However, we all know the RPM rate
can't continue upward indefinately or the stress upon the moving engine
parts will exceed operational limits. Shifting to a higher gear reduces
the RPMs required to spin the drive wheels. A 4:1 gear ratio means that
the engine rotates at four times the rate the gearing turns the
driveshaft. This is nice to get going from 0 mph. A 1:1 ratio means
the engine rotates at the same rate that the transmission rotates the
driveshaft. This is good for freeway cruising.

Actually, I have simplified things by eliminating the involvement of the
torque converter (on automatics), the differential gearing, and computer
controls, but only the basic concepts are necessary to understand the
analogy.

The 486 components like the floating point unit, the memory management
unit, the arithmetic and logical unit, the 8kb cache, and bus interface
unit, can operate at the CLK signal rate from the timer chip. When the
486 has to communicate with the keyboard controller, interrupt controlle
DMA controller, external cache controller, or adapters on the I/O bus,
the BIU reduces the rate to CLK x 2.

Using our auto analogy, this is like passing a car on the freeway by
dropping into a lower gear, then settling back into overdrive after
moving back into the right lane. Two questions arise. First, why don't
the other motherboard chips operate at CLK speeds? Second, does the
DX2 speend most of its time in overdrive or passing gear?

OEMs do produce systems meeting the criteria in question one. They are
DX systems. However, the power and cooling requirements needed to use
all these faster components are, at present, tricky and expensive for
50 mhz and above.

The 486 has enough integration on-chip to garner a net increase in
nearly all environments. The 386, by contrast, must go off-chip for
nearly all its functions. Thus, the performance gains would be
negligible in comparison to the 486. However, it is nearly impossible
to provide a net percentage gain for all environments (although many
vendors do). It is reasonable to assert that the architecture of the
486 enables the DX2 to be a good price performer.

Generally, the difference in price between a 33 mhz DX and 50 mhz DX2,
with identical configurations, is about $200. This is significantly
less than the price of a 50 mhz DX2. I don't believe this idea is as
bogus as the 486 SX; I don't consider the DX2 a joke. However, I don't
believe you could expect true 50 mhz performance. I would suggest a
test drive before buying any computer, or a 30-day trial when evaluating
any computer purchase.

Eric Webb

I've put this to the test at work where I have access to two machines
running OS/2:

PS/2 model 80 - 20 MHz 386DX, 4MB RAM, 160MB SCSI disk
PS/2 model 55SX - 16 MHz 386SX, 6MB RAM, 120MB SCSI disk

For normal applications like opening windows and reading help, the "slower"
55SX wins hands down - the 80 spends nearly all of the time thrashing
the disk. I've just upgraded the 80 to 6MB RAM and it's still not
particularly fast, but compared with 4MB it's like lightning.

At home I have a 33 MHz 486 with 16MB and OS/2 goes like greased lightning
(i.e. very fast). What's more my bad C code with built-in segmentation
violations no longer hangs the computer :-))

Organization: Bloomsbury Computing Consortium

I've just installed OS/2 v2.0 for the first time and there's one big
problem: how do I get LAN Manager Workstation 2.1 to work?

Three weeks ago I heard a Microsoft (UK) spokesperson strongly imply
that it would, but as soon as device= ...\netbeui.os2 is read
on boot up, the machine hangs.

My dealer tells me that in a confidential conversation with a Microsoft
technical person, he was told that the problem is "2% technical, 98% political"
and is unlikely to be fixed.

My machine is an IBM 55sx with 4Mb RAM / 3Com 3c523.

Any help/comments/commiseration gratefully received.

There has been a long run discussion of this topic on CompuServe. Microsoft
types say LM drivers for OS/2 are in beta and should be out Real Soon Now.
I have no reason to doubt them. The technical types on CompuServe have been
straight talkers so far. When the drivers are ready they will release them
for free. As soon as I get a copy I will make it available via anonymous
ftp from this machine.

As for server support for OS/2 2.0, they say they will support it "only if
there is a demand for it." Of course everyone on CompuServe has been
"demanding" it. If politics were at work I would guess it would be in whether
or not to support an OS/2 2.0 server. Client support for 2.0, though, seems
to be a given.

of a 32bit PM version SAS this fall which will be their flagship PC

be encouraging people to switch to OS/2 2.0. Good news!
