Subject: New files on LISTSERVer

This is a list of new or updated OS/2 related files available from the
LISTSERV of the OS/2 Discussion Forum at BLEKUL11.

* Files distributed via comp.os.os2.*

filename filetype Remarks
-------- -------- -------------------------------
FAQ19E ZIPXXE OS/2 Frequent Asked Questions v1.9E

* Files distributed via comp.binaries.os2

filename filetype Remarks
-------- -------- -------------------------------
CONNET4 ZIPXXE Game for OS/2 LAN Server/Manager
EMX08B PACKAGE Environment for creating 32bit DOS & OS/2 Apps
MEMSZ123 PACKAGE Reports OS/2 system information
PLYCOM10 PACKAGE Extended DD for serial interface cards
SNAPDUMP PACKAGE Captures system data into file
SUBSTP00 ZIPXXE SUBST for OS/2
UNARJ PACKAGE Archiver for Squish mail processor
ZAPPED ZIPXXE Game with lightnings & palm trees

Some of the available files come in - what is called - a package. If
you request such package you will automatically receive all necesarry
files. The zipxxe (XXencoded ZIP) files that you will receive must be
concatenated into one large ZIPXXE file by means of the COPY command.
(example : copy x.zipxxe1 + x.zipxxe2 x.zipxxe)

To use this large ZIPXXE file you must first XXdecode (We recommend our
own version of XXdecode which works under OS/2) and UNZIP (We recommend
PKZIP also under OS/2) it.

Note: Use PKUNZIP -d to unzip !!

These files are distributed AS IS, we can not guarantee anything about
their working.

IBM Corp. and Adaptec Inc. have developed an I/O specification for OS/2 2.0
that incorporates SCSI-based systems. The new specification is designed to
enable manufactures to develope peripherals optimized for working in a
32-bit environment.

Subject: PM and Fax, LA 6.177

If anybody is looking for fax solutions under OS/2, here are two
addresses which might be worth contacting:

Pacific Image Communications
1111 South Arroyo Parkway, Suite 430
Pasadena, CA 91105
Tel. (818) 441-0104
Fax (818) 441-2370

These people have a proprietary fax board and software to match.
Interesting product (networking...), but I ran into some software
bugs and I am so far not quite satisfied with their support.

Keller Group Inc.
Mark Ahlstrom
8600 Jewel Av. North
Stillwater, MN 55082-9351
Tel. (612) 429-7273
Fax (612) 653-1987
BBS (612) 653-0699

They are offering their PMFax for a lot of fax/modem boards. No
personal experience with their products, but I'll stay tuned
because they indicated their intention of implementing fax AND modem
support for the Intel Satisfaxtion board. Do not expect too much
from the BBS, it was only recently set up and is therefore still sparse.

(Standard disclaimer. I have nothing to do whatsoever with either PIC
or the Keller Group. I just happend to find them when I was looking for
fax solutions.)

Ah, BTW, I have an itsybitsy problem with LA 6.177 - I can't invoke
VDMs and Fullscreen Window; the system gives me a SYS0008. Since the
programs ought to be OS/2 programs, I suppose the reason is not
enough memory - but heck, it's an 8MB machine, and swapspace galore.
I already wrote off Windows support for the time being, but I wanted to
test some things (CD ROM access) with the VDMs. Any suggestions on how
to get a VDM running? (EMS already disabled, XMS disabled, and I also
turned off DPMI...)

Last question: In one of the last issues somebody explained how to get the
Adaptec 1742B running with OS/2. Does the same method apply with the
Adaptec 1740? Has anybody experiences with the Datatechnology DTC 3290
adapter?

Cheers!

Subject: OS/2 WITH DISK COMPACTING S/W

I am a eagerly awaiting OS/2 but have some concerns. I'm looking into
using a disk compaction program (STACKER) on my DOS partition (makes a 200MB
disk able to store 400MB of files), but am afraid that it will limit my
ability of installing / using OS/2. Are my concerns justified ???

I read today in INFOWORLD 2/24/92 issue that IBM is already planning for
updates to 2.0 (they're already calling it 2.1) that will include compaction
as one of the features. (page 6 - Scheduled date: First half of this year).

Any comments????

I am sumarizing for the net the consensus of those who responded to
my enquiry about fixing the extended attributes of some files on
my Compaq 386/25 with 9MB ram and a 110 MB HD. People recommended that
I boot up OS2 with the installation disk and then hit F3 to escape.
Then run chkdsk /f. But...
what I did was to use this opportunity to install OS2 v 2.0 beta which
is great. It seems to do everything that I've ever wanted an operating
system to do.

Subject: tokenring extension through a modem

We have an IBM Tokenring network (16 Mbit/s, UTP, IBM LAN Server)
with OS/2 clients (PS/2 >= 70).
We have a requirement to access this network from remote locations
via modem connections. The remote location will contain only one PC
(i.e. for staff working at home).

Any suggestions about implementations where the LAN Requester on the
remote client has the same possibilities as a client with a direct
connection to the TRN ?

Subject: AutoCAD & OS/2 2.0

Hi OS/2ers,

does anybody run AutoCAD (R10/11) under OS/2 2.0? AutoCAD uses Phar
Lap's DOS Extender and the manual says it conforms to the DPMI. So there
should be no problem with OS/2. However, it runs well under QEMM386
which is a VCPI and Quarterdeck says that Phar Lap uses the VCPI too.
Now who is right?

If anyone uses the following hard/software with OS/2 2.0 I will greatly
appreciate if you could tell me about your experiences (idiosyncrasies,
performance etc.).

- AutoCAD R10/11
- NEC MVA-1024
- SPEA Painter 1+, Hilite or FGA 860
- miroMAGIC (8514/A clone)
- NEC Multisync XL
- Philips FC20 AS
- EIZO 660i
- SummaGraphics MM II

I've checked the OS/2 Discussion Forum back to January 1991, but
couldn't find anything about that. I like the enthusiastic descriptions
about OS/2 running Wing Commander and doing other pretty stuff, but I
wonder if I'm the only one who tries to find out how to get OS/2 doing
such real-world things ... :-) Best regards, SDT

Subject: OS/2 2.0 EEP 6.304E
Date: Tue, 3 Mar 92 13:55:20 PST

I received a copy of the latest beta OS/2 2.0 from IBM called
6.304E. This version is not generally available to beta test
sites. Enhancements over the LA version (6.177H) include the
ability to run MS-Windows programs on the PM desktop, and a
complete migration tool which finds all MS-DOS, MS-Windows,
and OS/2 programs on the system and puts them into folders for
later organization. WinFile, after consuming 2 megs of VM,
was at least as fast as in native Windows, but this time it
was on the PM desktop.

I was able to run NetWare with the ODINSUP stack manager
and IBM OS/2 LAN Manager and TCP/IP 1.2. However, the
PMX-server would not function (it complained about needing
OS/2 1.3 or later). I had a similar problem in attempting
to use Microsoft Word for PM, SAS version 6.06 for OS/2, and the File
Manager from OS/2 1.3. These bugs should be fixed before GA.

As a preview of the GA code, it's definitely a step forward,
but not nearly as stable as the LA version. Since the code is
dated late February, the March 31 GA availability seems a little
optimistic.

Update on 6.304E beta release. The problem with PM apps not
running is apparently a bug in the 'migrate' application. If
a PM program object is defined from a program template or from
another program object that was not migrated, then the app
should work. The problem with the X-Server in IBM's TCP/IP,
however, remains.

Subject: PM SAVEBITS window style
Organization: Goldman, Sachs & Co.

Does the WS_SAVEBITS window style work in PM (Compaq OS2 1.21)? I feel I
must be doing something wrong. Even if I specify the flag in
WinCreateStdWindow(), the parent window gets redrawn when the
supposedly-savbits window gets moved or destroyed. Yet the mechanism obviously
works for menus and dialog boxes. Does anyone have a code fragment that
correctly creates a savebits frame window?

On another topic, I finally got around to writing a command line utility that
sets up OS2 1.2 program menus using the Prf() profile commands. This saves
having manually to set up user menus, which can be very time consuming when you
have lots of users and applications. I'll post the source here if anyone
cares.

to insert a diskette)
- Greater use of threads in the WPS and Install.
- Shutdown and IPL time reduced.
- Performance improvements. We had a 386 running 304 next to a 486 runnung
6.177H and they appeared to run the same speed.
- Windows ATM drivers
- Seamless Windows
- Coprocessor emulator that works properly
- 16 products that had limitation on LA now work.

[From Jim Lederer]

1) Shadow icons have their title written in a lighter color, so it's easy to
tell a shadow icon from the original icon for that object
2) You can choose, on a per-icon basis, whether that window, when minimized,
goes to the desktop, to the minimized window viewer, or just disappears
(accessible via the Window list only).
3) Sort and include pages in folder settings
4) Cat and Mouse works again :-)

To this I must reply:

I have video tape copies of multiple conferences (four I believe) where
the new IBM is clearly in control of OS/2. The last Window & OS/2 Conference
was not something new. It is a continuation of IBM's year long effort to
get OS/2 and itself ready.

I know IBM is working hard on its advertising and marketing. I can not say
more because of several promises. While I don't agree with several points,
overall the changes are a killer.

Of course, IBM's decision not to advertise before GA is one with which I
disagree. My input came in too late, though.

P.S. I am reading the comp.os.os2.* areas but am also in class full time

Thousands of $$$? IBM's OS/2 LAN Server entry version 2.0 lists for $795,
according to the announcement letter I have (291-630). If you want
peer-to-peer, then IBM's TCP/IP product starts at $200.

> The obvious question: When will OS/2 support peer to peer networking?

The obvious answer: IBM has had a TCP/IP product for OS/2 for at least
a couple of years now.

Warning: TCP/IP for OS/2 includes a program for accessing news. Net news
has proven to be addictive. Use at your own risk. :-)

I am tired of the window-bashing and the proliferation of disinformation
about windows on this newsgroup. Contrary to what the anti-windows
skinheads claim, windows provides:

1) TRUE MULTITASKING:
It is easy to efficiently run 3 tasks on 3 computers running
3 copies of windows. This is true multitasking. Other operating
systems try to do this on one computer and are hence inferior.

2) 32 BIT ENVOIRNMENT:
While true multitasking with three computers as described
above, windows truely provides 3 two-bit envoirnments.

3) TASK PROTECTION:
The ultimate in task protection is possible while using
windows in conjunction with the Reset Switch.

4) BACKGROUND PRINTING:
All Window background bitmaps are printable, I don't understand
what the problem is here.

SQL Server runs fine without a network. You would need to use an OS/2 client,
because it needs to use named pipes locally (the network software, Lanman
Novell or Banyan, provides pipes for DOS clients).

About 2.0, I'm sure that it will run fine there. I'm not sure that there
is any network software yet there which will support named pipes yet, but
I would assume that this will be there by GA. The main reason for running
SQL Server on OS/2 2.0 versus 1.3 would be to take advantage of >16 Meg
of memory, but I am not sure what percentage of machines out there will
be able to use this under OS/2 2.0, given the fact that most machines
(ISA, EISA or MCA) use 24 bit DMA.
