Subject: New files on LISTSERVer

This is a list of new or updated OS/2 related files available from the
LISTSERV of the OS/2 Discussion Forum at BLEKUL11.

* Files distributed via comp.binaries.os2

filename filetype Remarks
-------- -------- -------------------------------
BUG386 ZIPXXE Check 386 for MUL bug
CLONBOOT ZIPXXE Floppy disk boot sector to boot OS/2
DBMDEMO PACKAGE IBM DBM Demo, Info & Tools
DESKP132 ZIPXXE Deskpic v1.32
OS2K177L PACKAGE OS2KRNL which fixes CVP bug
PNVDSK ZIPXXE VDISK for OS/2 v2.0
TSENG12 PACKAGE TSENG Video drivers

Some of the available files come in - what is called - a package. If
you request such package you will automatically receive all necesarry
files. The zipxxe (XXencoded ZIP) files that you will receive must be
concatenated into one large ZIPXXE file by means of the COPY command.
(example : copy x.zipxxe1 + x.zipxxe2 x.zipxxe)

To use this large ZIPXXE file you must first XXdecode (We recommend our
own version of XXdecode which works under OS/2) and UNZIP (We recommend
PKZIP also under OS/2) it.

Note: Use PKUNZIP -d to unzip !!

These files are distributed AS IS, we can not guarantee anything about
their working.

We still welcome all OS/2 related files for distribution on our LISTSERV.
Send your files to OS2@BLEKUL11.BITNET / OS2@cc1.kuleuven.ac.be
we will arrange everything for distribution.

HI OS2-fans,

I use OS2 2.0/6.167 and I want install a copy of Communcation Manager
(the version could be 1.2 or 1.3).

How can I do that?

My 2.0 version don't have the REINST or EEINST programs, then I can't
install the Communication Manager.

I've try to use my old CMLIB directory (CM 1.2), but this version don't
run fine.

Thanx so much.

Subject: OS/2 2.0 (Beta release 6.167)

Hi OS2ers,

I hope eveyrone is doing ok. I have been using 6.167 and came across
the following:

* I changed the background of the WorkPlace Shell by clicking
the right mouse button, selecting Settings, Background,
Image. There are two (2) images available, the OS2LOGO.BMP
and LIGHTHOU.VGA.

I selected the LIGHTHOU.VGA image and I was impressed with
the end result. Following this, I noticed that the icon text
was not visible, thus becomming my reason for writing to the
list.

* I selected the Font Palette and changed the Font size and Font
color, but when I dragged the altered font on top of an icon on
the WorkPlace Shell and any folder, it DID NOT CHANGE!!! The
font size was the only thing that changed, but not the COLOR!!!

Has anyone had this problem with 6.167? I don't know if this is a know
problem or limitation till the finished product.

Furtheremore, how are these images created? I suspect they are scanned
and then Saved As either a Bitmap or VGA image. Can anyone shed some
light on creating images.

I would also like to do away with the initial boot up image (bitmap) that
is loaded when booting (the IBM OS/2 blue screen). I believe that the
image is called from the PMWP.DLL. The DLL can not be altered without
having the source code. I just want to by-pass that particular screen
or possibly use another type of bitmap.

Any comments are greately appreciated!!!

Thanks,

Kostas

Which clone? OS/2 1.3 will work on the clones that are the most compatable,
but not on all of them.

The following is a list of the clones which have been tested with OS/2 2.0
SO FAR! Others may be tested before the GA date. I will post this as often
as I get copies of it (and people want me to!)

PLEASE NOTE: I am NOT affiliated with the OS/2 development in IBM. I am
just trying to pass on information that I receive.

Well, then IBM has been speaking out both sides of its mouth.
This is what was told to use a couple months ago in an "official"
conference on Genie:

<Brian| B.PROFFIT1> Charlie, the December release will NOT be beta
code. It will be a finished product, fully supported by IBM. We
consider it not only suitable for production, but quite desirable for
production. A new book out by Mike Kogan from our Boca lab does an
excellent job of describing 2.0, and I think you'd find it helpful. GA

Some PM API calls changed between 6.167 and 6.177. The exe format ("LX")
did not change -- only some PM calls were invalidated. I'm sure DeScribe
will come out with an LA-compatible version.

There is a CSD for TCP/IP 1.2 which fixes this, then you can run without a
DOS box if desired. I don't know how one goes about getting CSDs for TCP/IP,
however, I guess from an IBM dealer.

OS/2 users might be interested in an ad I saw. (I wish I could
remember the exact source.) The vendor was advertising an XGA clone
card for $219, I believe. That could certainly be a misprint (e.g.
XGA resolution but not hardware compatibility), although there is an
XGA chipset out on the market now, so maybe it does exist.

That would be an extremely cost effective route if true.

I'll do some more digging and let you know what I come up with.

I promised I'd follow up on my sighting an ad for an inexpensive XGA
adapter. This ad very well might be a typo, but a company called Cad
One (tel. 800-524-1005 or 508-778-1897) advertises in February's Byte
an XGA adapter for $215.00. Frankly I'm skeptical, but there is an
XGA chipset out there. Perhaps the product is on the market, ready to
go, at a rock bottom price.

Incidently, the same issue of Byte (and the January 20th issue of
Infoworld) contain excellent articles on why it is extremely
cumbersome to use COM3 or COM4 under DOS/Windows and/or OS/2 without
assigning them to separate interrupts (if you have an ISA machine).
Well worth reading if you don't believe me on avoiding COM3 and COM4.
Read the experts. If you do want to go beyond two COM ports, go with
a smart adapter with appropriate drivers. Just my humble opinion, but
I'm in good company.

Subject: PC-Mag-Benchmarks in DOS-box

Just for curiosity I tried whether the PC-magazine benchmarkseries 5.6
would work under 32bit OS/2' DOS box. Here some interesting results:

Using a 486/33MHz IBM PS2/95 with a 160MB disk (HPFS only) and a partitioned
320MB disk with FAT and HPFS on it (attached thru SCSI), with XGA (1 MB VRAM).

PC-Mag tells me first that I am using a 486 with 16.7MHz, **but** the
benchmarks show that the processor is appr. 20 % faster than the
reference Compaq 486/25MHz. All following factors refer to Compaq 486/25MHz
being 1, so 1.2 means 20% faster than it, 0.8 means 20% slower.

1 processor tests in respect to Compaq 80486/25MHz
instruction mix 1.3 (8088) 1.3 (80286) 1.2 (80386) 1.2 (80486)
128K NOP loop 1.2
do nothing loop 1.3
integer addition 1.3
integer multiply 1.3
string sort & move 1.2
prime number sieve 1.2
floating point mix 1.0

2 coprocessor 0.9-1.1

DOS file access (small) 9.3 (FAT) 34.8 (HPFS)
DOS file access (large) 5.2 (FAT)15.6 (HPFS)

These are just the most common tests which I ran while watching 32bit OS/2'
clock and the processor-meter window going on parallel to the tests.

Also all the video-tests worked (changing the size of the DOS-window on-
screen) although some modes had to be done in full screen DOS.

Check it out, it is fun !

WfW doesn't. If you're using an encapsulated Postscript file (EPS)
there's a header containing a (usually) crude bitmap rendering of the
Postscript image. If this header doesn't exist (or if you're using a
printer which doesn't interpret Postscript, and you've checked the
"Display as Printed" option in Customize) you get an empty box.

>Moreover, why can't Windows do it so my application doesn't have to
>care? I know I can buy a program called Superprint which emulates a
>postcript printer and gets around the problem but that costs extra.

Two reasons. (a) Display Postscript wouldn't work particularly well
on most PCs out there. It requires a bit of horsepower. (b)
Microsoft elected not to license either ATM (the font rasterizer) or
Display Postscript, instead electing to create a new font rasterizer
called True Type (formerly Royal). IBM licensed the industry standard
ATM for its OS/2 beginning with Version 1.3.

>So what does this have to do with OS/2 you rightly ask. Well, will
>OS/2 go one better than Windows and provide this full builtin
>postcript capability? Having builtin ATM is a good start but the full
>deal certainly would make it a "better Windows than Windows" for me.
>Especially now that Win3.1 will have it's own builtin TrueType fonts.

It does go one better than Windows in including, standard, ATM, the
industry standard. So that the fonts you see on screen are exactly
what you get when printed. And the fonts are just like those used by
Postscript printers (which exist in great numbers). But because of
limited hardware Display Postscript wasn't in the cards. (IBM has
licensed Display Postscript, however, for its other products, notably
the RS/6000. And you just might see Display Postscript creep into
OS/2 as PCs become more powerful.)

There is one possible workaround that won't cost you anything. If
you'd like to preview your Postscript output you can use a program
from the Free Software Foundation called Ghostscript. (Would anyone
like to recompile this program for OS/2 PM? A wonderful project.)

See if you can get a prof to contact IBM about this.

The Microsoft C 6.00 compiler will do the job, but I wouldn't
recommend going out and buying it. It is unclear that MS will
provide an upgrade to a version compatible with OS/2 2.0.

You can benefit greatly from two books: "Advanced Programmers Guide
to OS/2" by Nguyen and Moskal, published by Brady (ISBN
0-13-642935-1), and

"Programming the OS/2 Presentation Manager" by Petzold, published by
Microsoft Press (ISBN 1-55615-170-5),

but these are version 1.x books.

Just released is "The Design of OS/2" by Deitel and Kogan, published
by Addison Wesley (ISBN 0-201-54889-5). It deals with version 2.0
and is superb for solid understanding of OS/2.

It does not deal explicitely with programming, however.

Um, that's including:

Command-line C/C++ 32-bit DMPI compiler (16-bit output)
IDE C/C++ 32-bit compiler
Windows C/C++ IDE/compiler
DPMI 32-bit assembler
resource compiler
Resource Workshop
3 debuggers (TD, TWD, TDWremote)
2 profilers (Win, DOS)
Help Compiler
Full C/C++ runtime library source code
Turbo Vision DOS windowing environment
Turbo Vision Runtime Source
ObjectWindows Windows class library
Object windows complete source
I'd say nearly 100 example programs
Lots of different tools for customizing the IDEs, including Macro
Compiler, message translation utilities, etc.
Online reference for C, C++, Windows, all class libraries, compiler
switches, assembler, etc.

Remember that this is Borland's FULL PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT package. It's
not intended for those who just want to fiddle. They have MUCH cheaper
versions for that. (much cheaper than the measley $200 I spent for mine).

Just my $.03. Note that I'm not affiliated with Borland in any way. Just
someone who is refreshed after dealing with MSC for so long.

Subject: Give us the File Manager back!

Treating programs and data as objects might be a good idea. But I
still prefer files to be treated as files. In the 6.177 I miss some of
the features in the "Good old File Manager".

It is often usefull to sort files by name, type, date, change
attributes, define which files that will be shown, etc. I have not
found any good ways for doing that in 6.177. To search for files with
a certain extension takes a lot of time. And I do not know how to sort
them by date.

My suggestions:

I like the concept of drives as objects, and I have put my drives on
the desktop. Keep that.

When the drive is opened, give us a least some choices: Icons or not
(as in file-manager), sorting, making directories, etc. In other
words: Let us have the File Manager commands. (Can I run File Manager
from 1.3 or 2.0 6.149 under 6.167?)

Just copy PMFILE.EXE and PMFILE.DLL.

Yea the CUA Vision demo is neat. Its available for d/l from the IBM

Arrgggghhh!!!! No it's not done (unless novell.com has suddenly started
working in the past 24 hours?!?!?!). It seems that one can upload things
to novell.com fine, but downloads of things more than a few k abort
prematurely :-( Would you please upload it to ANOTHER ftp site?
(My suggestion is hobbes.nmsu.edu, naturally :)

They are now in the pub/downloads directory. What version of ZIP was used
to make this archive? When I try to unzip either, I get a 'comment file
truncated error', so I can't unpack them :-(
