This is a list of new or updated OS/2 related files available from the
LISTSERV of the OS/2 Discussion Forum at BLEKUL11.

filename filetype Remarks
-------- -------- -------------------------------
CUADEMO PACKAGE IBM CUA Vision Demo

* Files distributed via comp.binaries.os2

filename filetype Remarks
-------- -------- -------------------------------
TRIDOS2 PACKAGE Trident 8900 Screen drivers for OS2 v2.0
177BK2 PACKAGE 6H.177 Workplace Shell Backup Utility
COM177N ZIPXXE COM DRIVER for 6.177H
JPEG2OS2 PACKAGE JPEG image com-and decompression
MOUSE177 ZIPXXE Mouse Driver Fix for 6.177H
OS2SHAR ZIPXXE Unix like 'shar'
PHONEATT ZIPXXE Phone monitor
TRID256A PACKAGE Supplement for TRID256
DHRYMON ZIPXXE PM dhrystone meter
L40177 ZIPXXE L40SX power management under OS/2 v2.0
PMFMT130 PACKAGE PM diskette formating program
TETRIS13 ZIPXXE FS TETRIS game

Some of the available files come in - what is called - a package. If
you request such package you will automatically receive all necesarry
files. The zipxxe (XXencoded ZIP) files that you will receive must be
concatenated into one large ZIPXXE file by means of the COPY command.
(example : copy x.zipxxe1 + x.zipxxe2 x.zipxxe)

To use this large ZIPXXE file you must first XXdecode (We recommend our
own version of XXdecode which works under OS/2) and UNZIP (We recommend
PKZIP also under OS/2) it.

Note: Use PKUNZIP -d to unzip ||

These files are distributed AS IS, we can not guarantee anything about
their working.

We still welcome all OS/2 related files for distribution on our LISTSERV.
Send your files to OS2@BLEKUL11.BITNET / OS2@cc1.kuleuven.ac.be
we will arrange everything for distribution.

If IBM ever releases a PL/I compiler for OS/2, they can either
price it so high that only corporate accounts can afford it or they can
price it low enough so that it (finally) catches on. Let's hope they do
the latter.

The Lan Manager Programmer's Guide on page 408 describes the OS/2 print
processor as a set of DLL subroutines. The Microsoft OS/2 Programmer's
Reference, Volume 1, Chapter 24 on printing mentions a queue processor
but does not document it. Where is it documented?

Subject: OS/2 1.3 File Manager runs in 2.0 (177-LA)

PMFILE did not run in the 167 version of OS/2 2.0, but it does
work in 177. Copy \OS2\PMFILE.EXE and \OS2\DLL\PMFILE.DLL from a
1.3 system. If 1.3 is installed on C: and 2.0 is installed on D:
one can add "LIBPATH=(...);.\DLL;..\DLL;" to CONFIG.SYS and then
point a Program Template to PMFILE.EXE with current directory C:\OS2.
This last trick is good for all sorts of packages.

A 1.2 and 2.0 system can share the same copies of Extended Services/2
and the LAN Requestor. On diskette 2 of the OS/2 LAN Requestor there
are two ZIP files REDIR20F.ZIP and REDIR13F.ZIP. They contain alternate
versions of RDRHELP and NETWKSTA with extensions of .200 and .SYS.
They are referenced in CONFIG.SYS. By manually unpacking whichever
you did not install, and then pointing the CONFIG.SYS on the other system
the alternate versions of these two files, a 2.0 and 1.3 system can
share all other files in \IBMCOM and \IBMLAN.

\CMLIB unpacks all of the files for both systems. However, the
version of one file referenced in CONFIG.SYS is system specific.
DEVICE=D:\CMLIB\APPN\CMKFMDE (2.0) or
DEVICE=D:\CMLIB\APPN\CMKFMDD (1.3)
With this one change, \CMLIB can be shared between the two systems.
Note: This assumes SNA support. However, anyone who
installed EE just to get a VT100 emulator should probably avoid any
serious thinking and would be advised to wait for future releases.

Since CM and the Requestor are shipped with 2.0 and change with every
new version, it makes sense to install them using the 2.0 system to
run the install process and put them on the 2.0 partition. Then they
can all be replaced together. HOWEVER!!!!!!!!! if you install these
programs only once then they put their magic file in only one of the
two \OS2\INSTALL subdirectories (on C: or D:) and these magic files
are needed for any reconfiguration. Therefore, while having only one
\CMLIB and one \IBMLAN can save lots of disk space, one can only
reconfigure CM, APPN, or LAPS when running the OS/2 under which
they were installed. Given the suggestion above, one would not run
CM Advanced Configuration under 1.3 if 2.0 was the system under which
ESINST was run.

Remember, if you have OS/2 1.3 EE, you can treat it as an SE system
by running the installation process up to the point where it asks for
diskette 7 and then pressing ALT-CTRL-DEL. Also you can install ES/2
on an EE system and it will remove the EE parts before installing itself.

Desqview offers an API that allows one DOS session to read the
screen of another DOS session and send keystrokes to that session.
Does OS/2 2.0 have an API that allows one DOS session to control
another? Is there another way to do it?

Subject: Microsoft apps and 32bit OS/2

In the last issue someone wanted a clarification about Microsoft PM-
applications.

In last October Microsoft Austria had made it public that Microsoft
is going to pull all PM-apps from the market, starting with PM-Word
initially to be followed by Excel (this was actually repeated by
Microsoft at the OS/2 user group meeting in Austria in October which
made MIS-managers angry, because they trusted Microsoft's claim that
OS/2 is the future in the PC-operating system arena and therefore
heavily invested in Microsoft products for OS/2).

After a couple of weeks, they said no, you misunderstood us. Microsoft
will leave their present PM-application on the market, ***but*** there
will be no new versions, i.e. PM-Word is frozen to 1.1 and Excel to 3.0.
Future enhancements in these programs will ***not*** happen.

Interestingly, Microsoft supplied fixes for PM-Word to run under
32bit OS/2. It seems that the outcry about Microsoft's outrageous move
(pulling their PM apps from the market) by their customers forced them
into leaving them in the market and supporting at least the frozen versions.

What will happen with Microsoft politics regarding 32bit OS/2, I do not
know. Being on the safe side, I would invest in companies which are
not interested in politics which disadvantage their own customers. Speak,
do not buy PM-Word, rather buy Describe or AmiPro (I know AmiPro and
Word4Win 2.0, AmiPro beats the sh** out of Word in easiness and functiona-
lity, IMHO), do not buy Excel (although it is an excellent product at
the present time), rather buy Lotus 1-2-3 or QuattroPro. With other
words, dump Microsoft, invest in companies which support their applications
on all important platforms, regardless of religion or politics. This is for
yourself, for **you** to be on the safe side.

I would change this negative attitude towards Microsoft **only** after
18 months, Microsoft proofing that they are serious to deliver state of
the art apps to 32bit OS/2-platforms.

Subject: Getting OS/2 beta to install on your Adaptec 1542B SCSI Card
Organization: University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, North Dartmouth, MA, USA

Here are the instructions for installing OS/2 2.0 beta on your computer
with the Adaptec 1542B SCSI controller card :

1) Make a Backup Copy of the OS/2 Disk 1
Note : Disk 1, not the instalation disk
2) Rename the SCSI01.SYS file to DISK01.SYS on the Adaptec Driver Disk
3) Copy DISK01.SYS from the Adaptec disk to the OS/2 Disk 1

This will allow OS/2 to install. However OS/2 doesn't copy the
correct DISK01.SYS to the hard drive for booting purposes. When OS/2
asks to re-boot to complete the instalation, do the following :

Put a Bootable DOS disk in drive A. This allows you to correct
the DISK01.SYS file on the hard drive. If you don't follow this
procedure, it will not boot. After you get the command prompt,
copy the DISK01.SYS (again) to the hard drive in the proper OS2
directory. Notice that the file is properly located in the in the OS2
directory. (ex. COPY DISK01.SYS C:\OS2\DISK01.SYS).

Now you may restart your computer again with the DOS disk removed
from drive A. OS/2 will now boot and finish the instalation.

Encountered Problems
--------------------

The DISK01.SYS file is only a generic driver. The disk accessing time
is painfully slow, as you will soon find out.

The ASPI4OS2.SYS will not install anywhere in the OS/2 CONFIG.SYS file.
It isn't compatible with the new version. Remember this driver was
orginally written for OS/2 version 1.1. They never released the 1.3
driver, due to lack of intrest for OS/2. Supposidly if their was a 1.3
driver, it work work perfectly with the 2.0 beta, as with other SCSI cards
that currently do.

At least this will get you up and going for the time being.

I have not yet tried the HPFS file system with the beta test verion yet.
I have had other people complaining that it didn't work with the
current driver, yet I am not sure if they did the proper instalation to
begin with.

Furthermore, I have had people sucessfully install the OS/2 beta
with the Adaptec SCSI card with other hard drives installed (ie. MFM,
RLL, ESDI, IDE) with no problems what so ever.

Other Problems
--------------

If you are having problems, try a fresh re-boot. My hardware reset
on my machine didn't always do a "RESET". Psysically turn the computer
on and off again. The OS/2 beta with the generic SCSI driver seems to be
extrodinary sensitive at times. It appeared to me that the hardware
reset wasn't sufficient most of the time. Remember the OS/2 is in
beta itself and we are installing an older driver. Be patient, the
instalation process is very slow.

I have been working with Adaptec directly and will have the final
confirmation on the updated driver within this week (hopefully). I will
post a message as soon as I find out what the plans are for the future.
They promised to have a driver once the final version is released.

Other News
----------

I heard from an X-Adaptec employee that Adaptec and IBM are
supposidly working together on the new driver. Another rumor is that
the Adaptec driver may become standard with the official release of
OS/2 2.0 in it's March release date. I will keep all interested people
up to date as I find out, only if requested. If you are interested in
OS/2 as I am, I am sure you would be interested on the updates. Send
me a mail message if you are still interested.

If you have any further questions or comments, please feel free to drop
me a message anytime. Thanks to all of you who replied. Have fun with
your OS/2 beta.

If you want to model them all the same you could make a model user
(MODEL1) and assign the desired apps, filesets, and printers via the
menu. Then, after you define the new user, their home fileset, and
access rights, you could copy the contents of \IBMLAN\DCDB\USERS\MODEL1
to \IBMLAN\DCDB\USERS\<new user> with a XCOPY sent to the domain
controller via a NET ADMIN.

Of course, this would only work if you want a group of users defined the
same (you could make multiple models). PCLP had a nice feature that you
could specify an user to model when you created a new one, but, alas,
not in LS!

Hope this helps.

For those of you who are interested, as I'm typing this message, I'm in a
Microsoft DOS 5.0 virtual machine with MS CD ROM extensions loaded, running
Qmodem.

At the same time I've got a copy of the virtual machine running IPX and NET5,
logged into the server, and running Lotus 123 3.1+.

I'm very impressed, though Lotus doesn't seem to think there is a coprocessor.
Isn't 2.0 supposed to emulate a math co? Did I overlook a setting?

-Mike

BTW, the CD ROM extensions work GREAT in a DOS VM, but I could not get them
to work at all under the DOS emulator. Same with IPX and Net5.

Do you *have* a coprocessor? If your application attempts to use a
coprocessor and you don't have one, OS/2 2.0 will emulate one. But
if your application checks for a coprocessor, it won't see one. The
reason for this is that some apps check for a coprocessor, and if
one isn't there, use their own routines which are optimized for the
way the app calls them. If OS/2 tried to fake out the app, it would
wind up running slower because it thought there was a real coprocessor.

This needs clarifying as to just when the coprocessor emulation will be
provided. Every app that I know of checks for a math co before using one,
and going by what you just said, if the app checks, OS/2 will tell it there's
not one.

It sounds as if OS/2 will trap the Fxxx instructions if they are blindly
executed by a program, and only then. Can you clarify a bit?

Not really a dos "box", a virtual machine running a copy of Microsoft DOS 5.0
instead of the native OS/2 DOS5 emulator. You can set OS/2 2.0 to boot the
emulator, a diskette, a partition, or an image file. I simply read my DOS5
boot disk in as an image, and it boots that.

The DOS VM capability is provided for compatibility reasons, that is things
that only work under a certain version of DOS (that SETVER won't even make
work) can be run in that version of DOS by booting that version in a window.
I was going to scan in a DOS 3.3 and DOS 4.01 disk for fun, too..

This is to be sure that 80386/80486 machines will work with
