Some of the available files come in - what is called - a package. If
you request such package you will automatically receive all necesarry
files. The zipxxe (XXencoded ZIP) files that you will receive must be
concatenated into one large ZIPXXE file by means of the COPY command.
(example : copy x.zipxxe1 + x.zipxxe2 x.zipxxe)

To use this large ZIPXXE file you must first XXdecode (We recommend our
own version of XXdecode which works under OS/2) and UNZIP (We recommend
PKZIP also under OS/2) it.

Note: Use PKUNZIP -d to unzip !!

These files are distributed AS IS, we can not guarantee anything about
their working.

We still welcome all OS/2 related files for distribution on our LISTSERV.
Send your files to OS2@BLEKUL11.BITNET / OS2@cc1.kuleuven.ac.be
we will arrange everything for distribution.

Subject: IBM does notice my letter to Akers and ...

Between September 1, 1991 and November 20, 1991, I composed a letter to
John Akers (Chairman, IBM Corporation). I sent the letter via overnight
mail November 21, 1991. Last night (January 7, 1992) I received a formal
notice that IBM recieved the letter and is:

- using it in meetings concerning the future of OS/2 advertising
- forming a reply

Lucy Baney called me (twice) and we talked about many topics. This
included:

- Jim Reilly (General Manager, IBM Communications). I told her my
opinion on the target MIS directors for OS/2 advertising direction.
Her reply was: You don't need to tell me about Jim Reilly. I know
about him.

- She agrees with us that IBM must market to the persons using OS/2
not to the MIS director.

- I explained my TV ad idea (based on SOLOFLEX). She had not thought
of it and liked the idea.

- We discussed helping OS/2(tm) Monthly magazine with advertising.

- We discussed upcoming MS TV advertising and how they opened a Windows
Learning center in Minneapolis, MN with 15 free seminars on Windows
and its applications. Say, like my OS/2 Learning Center idea ....

- I again strongly suggested IBM create an OS/2 advisory board and
offered to sit on it. Lucy said: That if they do the idea, I'll
be the first one put on the board.

- She asked if she could feel free to call me. I said yes.

- We discuss some topics off the record including about a meeting
which she had with John Akers.

OS/2 in '92!
A question for IBM:
IBM makes PERSONAL Systems and used to make PERSONAL Computers, Righ?
OS/2 2.0 runs on 386SX+ PERSONAL Systems and PERSONAL Computers, Right?

So why doesn't IBM advertise OS/2 to the PERSON using the Personal System
or Personal Computer?

Subject: IFS problem in 6.149

I tried to install MS LAN Manager 2.o over my test-installation
of OS/2 6.149, but after booting it up I received an error message
stating that there was an incorrect file or device driver in file
"...netwksta.sys", which had been mentioned in config.sys as an
IFS, i.e. the config.sys-line was

IFS=C:\lan\netprogs\netwksta.sys /i:c:\lan

and this wasn't accepted by OS/2 2.o. An identical workstation
running under OS/2 1.3 accepted the very same line without complaints.
Do I have to wait until the final OS/2 2.o is available or is there a
workaround or did I do anything wrong ?

Any help deeply appreciated,
- Klaus.

Hi!

I'm very interested in OS/2 2.00 and will probably buy it the same day when it
arraives. But now I want to know more about OS/2 new FAT and how does DOS
deal with partitions formatted that way. I'm interested also which file-
manager do you use, because ther is none built in and PCTOOLS or NORTON
probably won't work well....
I'm interested also in file protection and so called logging utility...

Subject: OS/2 and SCSI

Since Gregory Koster asks for info on OS/2 and ANY SCSI systems:
OS/2 works fine on IBM PS/2 SCSI systems!

Better news still, it works even on non-IBM SCSI disks connected to the IBM
IBM MCA SCSI-1 controller. BUT NOT ON ALL SCSI DISKS.
Be warned, we tried a Maxtor 1.2GB drive, but this refused to return
it's size to the controller.
We then tried a HP 1.1GB SCSI-2 drive, and that works fine. It's twice as
fast and twice as cheap as the PS/2 400MB drives... (but 10 times as noisy)

Subject: Send / receive to TSO

I am responding to your Patrick McKane's query.
I take it that you want to do file transfer through an asynchronous
connection (i.e. through COMx port and a modem), and attach to an IBM
mainframe through a protocol converter (e.g. 7171 or 9370 ASCII subsystem).
The protocol converter emulates full screen 3270 sessions for users that
behave as a VT100 or 3101 (or ...) terminal. The IBM way to perform file
transfer is simply to use the Communication Manager of OS/2 1.3 EE configured
for asynchronous VT100 emulation. That's what I am doing now, talking to
COM2 - trailblazer - phoneline -trailblazer - ASCII subsystem - IBM mainframe.
I can also transfer files using the RECEIVE and SEND commands, e.g.
RECEIVE pc-file <name>:mainfram-file ASCII CRLF
in an OS/2 window where <name> is the name of the terminal profile I have
started (displayed in the lower right corner of the emulator).
For this to work, the mainframe must be equipped with module IND$FILE,
officially known as '3270 File Transfer program'.
It even works if I connect to other machines through TCP/IP.

The 'easier' IBM way is to use an SDLC adapter and a synchronous modem.
At the same baud rate this works considerably faster, but you have to have
a synchronous modem on the mainframe side, and possibly an XID
(well, maybe V42bis will change that in the future in favor of async - but
my 19.2K Telebit trailblazer connection gets an effective throughput of 4800
bits/s due to bottlenecks in the protocol converter - on V32 SDLC I get a
throughput of 8600 bits/s effective - all over 100KB file transfers)

Note that there is definitely no requirement for a 3270 gateway card in your PC
(only if you need to REPLACE an existing 3270 terminal at the end of a
coax connected to a cluster controller).

The non-IBM way is to install e.g. kermit on your PC and on the mainframe.
The C-kermit for OS/2 works in protected mode, but has no keyboard remap
(wchich means it is useless to actually use 3270 full screen emulations),
but is fine for file transfer only, just put mainframe kermit in server mode.

In addition, the MS-kermit will work in the DOS box if you leave out ASYNCDDx
device drivers of the communication manager's ACDI, but that will not work
in the background under 1.3.

Hi, I was wondering if it is in any way possible for someone in Canada to
get the OS/2 Beta or LA version. I would really like to try it out, but the
EEP says that it is only for people in the States. Is there any equilvalent
or other way for Canadian users to get it?

Thanks in advance.

we'll place your question in this os2 forum. This is however already a
quick reply from myself. The EEP is not for the U.S. only. My company
(in Belgium) is an official OS/2 EEP site ... You can demand to be adde
to the EEP program (or the ESP program, or the DAP program). Formulate
this demand to the local country IBM Branch. As far as Europe is con-

Can anyone tell me how to access specific physical
memory locations in C (MS C V6.00) under OS/2? I want
to be able to access a particular area of memory used
by an expansion board.

An assembler solution would be OK, too, if it's not
possible direct from C. I have the MS developer's
kit, and OS2 1.3.

Hi everybody in the OS/2 camp!
I'm subscribed to the List since April 1991, using OS/2 since
January 1991, reading books on the subject since 1989. Well, now
(maybe lately) I'm included in the EEP by the Moscow's IBM reps.
I'm using a 386/25 clone with 8M RAM and 80M Conner HD partitioned
as follows: 33M FAT DOS and the rest (extended partition) split
in two: 30M HPFS used for OS/2 programs, and additional FAT disk.
I'm using 1.3EE and no problems were encountered so far.
I forgot to mention that my computer is ASCOTA AG from Germany based
firm. It is based on standard CHIPSET. The only non-standard feature
is II387/20 instead of a regular Intel.
I should emphasize that until now no software has proved to be
unusable on this box.
I formatted the main partition by DOS format with or without /s
option. The result is the same. OS/2 2.0 shows the 1st screen, then
asks for the Disk 1, then shows a beautiful label then just before
showing the 3d screen the keyboard locks, then 3d screen shows but is
unusable.
I'm asking for any HELP or HINT that may clarify what's going on.
My interests are in Science, OOP PM Programming, Databases.

Subject: Speed, speed, speed (Re: OS/2 and laptops

Just to prevent someone at IBM saying: "gee, they did not complain,
therefore the actual speed of work-place-shell and 32bit OS/2 is
sufficient".

6.177 (LA) is probably still a stabilized beta-version of 32bit OS/2.
Because of that I still have hope. I assume that no speed improvements
are in effect with that beta (= LA), it is nothing but a stabilized and
therfore safe version.

The problem: speed of work-place-shell, user-unfriendly-disk-object,
speed of OS/2 itself and the ***huge*** swapping-file all of a sudden
needed for 32bit OS/2.

When Windows 3.1 will hit the market with big marketing by Microsoft's
side, people will want to watch 32bit OS/2 side by side with Windows 3.1.
That means, by the present version, that one compares a speedy, snappy
Windows against a lame (Workplace Shell) 32bit OS/2, apparently Windows
being optically faster in presenting the shell (and therefore inclining
OS/2 being slower). I have to make the ***lame*** workplace shell to
an almost **stottering, close of hanging up*** workplace shell (by
comparison).

The next point is the hard-disk consumption. I have a 16MB 486 machine
and OS/2 sometimes needs up to 10 MB of swapspace where in 1.3 it
used maybe 2MB. With lesser memory probably the swap-needs get higher
hitting 20MB, 30MB, ... ???

Is there someone at IBM who could clarify the speed issue (general of
32bit OS/2, Workplace Shell) and disk-consumption (swapfile.dat) in
respect to GA 32bit OS/2 at this time ? I sure hope, that GA blows
away 1.3 in regards to speed and can be at least as fast and snappy in
regard to the user-interface (i.e. workplace shell) in order to succeed.

In the December 15th issue of Datamation, there is an article covering
the issue. Among other things, it says:

"Roadhouse says, "the affinity between the two products is still
sufficient so that if, for example, int het same domain you want to
run a LAN Manager and a LAN Server, A LAN Manager client can log onto
the LAN Server and can use the resources of the LAN Server.
Essentially we interoperate very well."

Roadhouse adminsts, however, that "it's not quite as clean going the
other way. For example, an OS/2 LAN requester cannot log onto a LAN
Manager server. It has to log onto its own server. Once it's logged
on, however, then it can access the LAN Manager server and use some of
its services. And that's because we [LAN Server] manage both users and
resources; LAN Manager ant their administration only manages users.
Our requester are looking for some information from the domain
controller that LAN Manager doesn't provide."

I just read it today, and was a bit disappointed. I had hoped to run
LAN requester under OS/2 2.0 and then access our LAN Manager server.
In the same article, a representative from Microsoft says that they
will ship an OS/2 2.0 client for LAN Manager "when that becomes
practical", and I understand from this that they will ship it when
OS/2 2.0 goes GA.

There's a bug in the B1-step Intel 80386 that causes problems, so if you
have this level processor, OS/2 disables the coprocessor. The problem is:
When the B1 is used in 80386 mode (32 bits), with paging on, and with
the coprocessor present, there may occur a microcode hang on FNINIT.
