I hoped that my call for opinions on my dilemma would generate some
reactions, but I didn't forsee that there would be so many! I got 86
messages in total with opinions, advice and the usual compliments. ;)
I hope you understand that I didn't reply to you all personally.
The dilemma was: Should shareware games be included in the Top 100
if they do not have a finished registered version (like Descent).
If so, should we also include demo versions of unreleased commercial
games (like Dark Forces)? Here are the results:
From those 86 people 32 of them think my current rules are ok. This
means that shareware games are included, even if the registered version
is not available yet. Demo versions of commercial games however are not
allowed in the list. These versions are much less a proper representation
of the finished version than shareware games are.
But, no less than 37 people want me to include unfinished shareware
games as well as demo versions. The argument is that if people vote for a
demo version then this version appears to be enjoyable enough to be
treated as a game by itself. Therefore it should be listed in the chart
as such.
So it's 32 in favour of the current situation, and 37 in favour of
changing it so that demo versions are also allowed in the chart. I don't
think that a difference of 5 people is significant enough to change a
policy, especially when those against the policy are more likely to vote
than those in favour of it. However, I will indeed change to policy for
the time being, for the reasons described below.
The remaining 17 people had the most interesting suggestions, and the
one presented several times was to differentiate between easy-to-get
free distributable games (shareware, demos and freeware) and hard-to-get
more expensive games (retail and registered versions). In this scheme
the Top 100 should be reserved for retail/registered versions only,
while I should introduce a new list for free distributable games. This
would have the following advantages:
- It solves the dilemma. Demo games are not allowed in the Top 100, an
opinion voiced by one half of the voters. But they are indeed mentioned
in the list (but in another chart) to promote their playability, an
opinion voiced by the other half of the voters.
- The distinction between demo games and shareware games will be
neglectable, as they are both in the same new chart.
- Many people have been asking for a seperate list of shareware games.
With a seperate list of free distributable games they finally get what
they want (more or less).
- When the Top 100 is freed from 'strange' free games like Minesweeper
and Angband and unfinished games like Descent, the list will be more
interesting for magazines and retail sellers.
- Shareware games always had an advantage in the Top 100 because voters
can get them for free. I have always found this a little unfair towards
commercial games. In this new situation the commercial games will
compete with the registered versions of shareware games, which is a
fight on equal terms.
One problem I will have to solve though, is the fact that voters must
vote for either the demo/shareware version of a game or the retail/
registered version. I will have to sort some things out, like: Should it
be possible to vote for both versions? How must I change the format of
the votes in the least ambiguous and most reliable way? And how soon can
I alter my software to cope with the new situation?
I can already answer that last question: not soon. It will probably take
one or two months before things are implemented. (I have lots of other
stuff to do first, not at all related to the Top 100 unfortunately.) In
the meantime I will allow both shareware versions and demo versions of
games that are not released to the public yet. When I have the new
program ready, these games will be moved to the new list and the Top 100
will have some more room for other retail games worth entering the list.
