I enjoyed reading the discussion that started as a result of Doom being
thrown back to #2 by UFO/X-Com. You people wrote and flamed a lot in the
csipg.action newsgroup. Now Doom is back on #1 because of some lobbying
by some people. And X-Com may be back on #1 next week if the X-Com fans
do the same. Now I'd like to say a few things in response to last weeks'
thread.

"The Top 100 is just some stupid list."
No it is not. In fact, the Internet Top 100 is read by most important
game developers and publishers. They think it's quite an interesting
source of information. Immediately after X-Com's success I got a message
from MicroProse. It sounded as if they were celebrating the defeat of
Doom.

"The Top 100 has no statistical value."
That's right. I never claimed it has. BUT, it still is a list that tells
you more than you may think. For example, it told us that Alone in the
Dark 2 is not at all such a big success as part 1 was. It tells us that
Pinball Fantasies is by far more popular than Pinball Dreams was. It
tells us that little games like Minesweeper and VGA Planets do better
than many expensive commercial games. And it tells us that Pacific Strike
was a joke compared to the flight-sims from MicroProse and Microsoft. Now
try to find such interesting information in the magazines! You won't!
But you're right when you say that the difference for a game being on
number 2 or number 3 has no meaning.

"The Top 100 counts the number of messages about games in the newsgroups."
That was true last year. I stopped it because it took so much time. Only
votes from voters are used for the compilation now.

"You can only vote for Doom 4 times."
I don't know why people typed this, but it's certainly not true. You can
vote for a game 26 times. Your votes are automatically used four times
if you don't vote each week. If you use all 26 weeks with as little new
messages as possible, you will need at least 7 messages to reach the
limit. Not four. With four messages you can use 16 weeks.

"The Top 100 guy is against Doom."
Certainly not true. In fact, I am amongst the voters supporting it at
the moment. I didn't like it on my old pc, but I do like it on my new
Pentium 90Mhz :). Yes, I did say that I liked to have a new number one in
the list, but that is only because I don't want my Top 100 to be boring.
Quite a reasonable thought, I think.

"The CGW Top 100 is by far better than the Internet Top 100."
Are you kidding? That list is a joke. 1) It is published many weeks after
the data has been collected. 2) Games are REMOVED from that list by the
staff! Just try to find Civilization in it. You won't find it! 3) You can
only vote for games that they want you to vote for. You won't see
Minesweeper, Excelsior or Nethack in that list. 4) The way you must vote
for the games in that list is just ridiculous. You can even give negative
ratings. Something that we've agreed upon here to be a bad thing. 5) You
can't watch games go up and down in the CGW Top 100. You can't see them
getting more or less popular over time. The CGW Top 100 is a better list?
That must be a late April fool's joke!

"The 26 weeks limit was introduced to work against Doom."
Not true at all. Yes, I introduced it around the time that Doom came out.
But I did it because Civilization, and some other games, had a vast and
steady amount of voters. It looked like they would stay in the list for
many years to come. And I just don't want a list that looks the same every
week. People were complaining to me about the Top 100 being so
uninteresting around that time, because nothing happened. That's why I
came up with the 26 weeks rule. It's one thing or the other.

"The 26 weeks rule makes the Top 100 unfair to older games."
Here's what we can choose from:
1. No 26 weeks rule. Games can stay in the Top 100 as long as people are
willing to vote for it. Even if it's the same set of voters supporting
it till they die. Lastability of games gets more attention than hot new
begging for attention.
2. A 26 weeks rule (or any other number of weeks). Every week life will
get harder for the older games. They will only survive as long as they
are able to appeal to NEW voters. We see that Civilization is able to
do so, and VGA Planets and Star Control 2. Other games can only rely
on the same set of voters. They will die out. We'll see how well Doom
does in this respect. New games get more attention.
I prefer a chart that keeps itself fresh. Emphasis should be on the power
to find new voters. And I really don't understand why people complain
about being restricted to half a year. Take a look at the retail charts.
When you buy a game it is only accounted for ONE time. Not 26 times. You
don't complain about that too, do you? Your favourite games already have
the ability to stay in the Top 100 much longer than in other charts. (At
least I don't just remove them, like the CGW guys do.) What's the point
in making this period endless?

"X-Com is better than Doom." "No, Doom is." "X-Com!" "Doom!" "X-COM!"...
Doom was on number one within no more than 3 weeks! It took X-Com 13
weeks. Partly because Doom is shareware and shareware games usually
climb much faster, because we all FTP and play them in the same weeks.
Doom was on number one for 26 weeks, and is now back on number one
because of some lobbying. This will probably die out soon, and either
X-Com is back or Tie Fighter makes it to number one. Only when X-Com
has been on number one longer than Doom, we can say that X-Com did
better. Time will tell.

"Doom dropped to number 2 because of the 26 weeks rule."
I had several people flaming me for it. And it's not true. Here are the
points of Doom over its first 32 weeks on the chart:

week 1: 383 week 8: 852 week 15: 762 week 22: 598 week 29: 488
week 2: 578 week 9: 842 week 16: 765 week 23: 576 week 30: 453
week 3: 681 week 10: 814 week 17: 717 week 24: 542 week 31: 479
week 4: 870 week 11: 764 week 18: 665 week 25: 539 week 32: 553
week 5: 874 week 12: 769 week 19: 652 week 26: 547
week 6: 866 week 13: 718 week 20: 593 week 27: 465
week 7: 881 week 14: 752 week 21: 564 week 28: 500

You can see that Doom reached it's highest point in week 7 and has been
dropping ever since! The decline of Doom started long, long before the
26 weeks rule could have any effect. It's just plain coincidence that it
got kicked off number one right after being there for 26 weeks. The rule
will only make it even harder for Doom to claim back this position in
the next few weeks. But it's not the cause.

Oh, and the fact that shareware games usually climb fast and drop fast
is another thing we learned from the Top 100. Who said that this list has
no interesting information?
