Last week I wrote about a new rule for the Top 100, which says that one
person should not vote for the same game for more than 26 weeks. Several
people mailed me about this. Some applauded this decision and some did
not agree with it. A number of people were confused about it, so I'll
try to be more clear about a few things:
Games that are more than 26 weeks old will not drop drastically in the
chart. A game that can keep getting new people to vote for it will stay
high. Only those games that have to rely on the same bunch of voters,
with no new voters for these games joining in, will suffer the
consequences just a little. This creates more room for newer games.
The new rule does not apply to the monthly Top 50, published at the end
of each month. This list still contains the raw data, without any rules
applied to it.
The 26 weeks do not necessarily mean 26 weeks in a row. One can vote
26 times for the same game, spread over a much longer period. Remember
though that one message with votes is used four weeks in a row, when
you don't vote again. This is counted as having voted for the games
four times.
I know there is one drawback to this new rule. Some games get add-ons
which can motivate people to keep voting for these games. The rule does
not yet account for this possibility. I'm thinking about how to cope
with this.
Some people complained that the list will not be accurate anymore.
Please understand that the Top 100 is compiled using several complex
rules and algorithms. It's not just a normal chart based on absolute
numbers. The new rule is just one of many and does not change the nature
of the list, which is still weird. It just assures that the chart is a
little more interesting to look at, by giving new games a better change
to climb higher so they are better noticed.
I hope to send people some kind of personalized email, so they know that
they have been voting for a game for more than 26 weeks. This is hard to
achieve however, so don't expect it soon.
I do think my decision can have a positive effect on the number of voters
in the future. Some people who haven't bothered voting before, because of
the few changes in the top of the list, may start to get interested now.
I think they will outnumber the people who hate to see their favourite
but old games go down a few places.
