This week I include a top 5 for all 7 categories, based on votes received
in June. I also include a top 5 for shareware games only. Several people
asked for such a list.
I told you I am very busy making new software for the Top 100. For this
I'm using Turbo Pascal (I dream in this language) and the B-Tree units
from Turbo Power for the database utilities. It's my intention to make
the program so easy to use, that someday I can let others compile the
charts when I'm too busy enjoying a holiday.
Apart from this, I have solved several problems I had with the earlier
program. From now on, no one should get more than one chart, when he or
she is voting from different systems. The program now extracts a unique
name from the email-addresses, which remains the same when people are
using several machines.
New games not in the chart were previously stored in a separate file,
which caused a lot of problems. Now they are stored in the normal
database, with temporary ID numbers descending from 9999. This means that
these new games can be treated the same as all the others. For example, a
game can now hit the Top 20 of games most talked about, when it isn't
even released yet. It's also possible for new entries to skip the Tip 20,
like Realms of Arkania does this week. This game enters the Top 100 only
a week after it's release, which wasn't possible before. Space Hulk did
the same last week.
There are many other things in the new program that should make my life a
bit easier. This includes the compilation of the different charts: The
Top 50 of games most voted for, the Top 20 of games most talked about,
and the Top 5 for each category. All of these are made with just a single
keystroke. Very easy indeed. These lists took me hours before. Now what
shall I use this extra spare time for?
