Last week something strange happened at my Top 100 residence. I got
around 15 messages on one day, all voting for Falcon 3.0. At first I
thought someone was trying to boost his influence on the Top 100 by
sending many messages, using slightly different email-addresses. This has
happened before and it's something that I'm working on to prevent. This
time however the votes appeared to come from 15 very different persons. I
didn't understand why 15 people should send a vote only for Falcon 3.0 on
the very same day. This couldn't be a just a coincidence. Furthermore,
most of the messages held exactly the same amount of spaces in between
the points, title and publisher. This made it even more strange, since
I'm used to very different looking messages, even within the boundaries
of the specified format.
I started to think I was dealing with some sort of setup by one or more
people, that was going to screw up the objectivity of the Top 100. I
wrote to those voting only for Falcon 3.0 on that particular day that I
was not going to use their votes and that their email-addresses would be
put on a black list, unless they could explain what was going on. The
answer explained it all. There's a mailing list for Falcon 3.0 fans, and
someone asked them all to vote for this game. The ones who did, used the
example that this person had posted to them. This of course was the
reason that all the messages I got looked so very similar.
I apologized to these new voters for receiving them with such an unkind
welcome. However, I was faced with a new problem. If I would include all
the votes for Falcon 3.0, it would be very unfair to all the other games.
The Falcon fans would clearly be over-represented, which would pull it
all out of balance. But if I wouldn't include these votes it would be
unfair to Falcon 3.0. This game already got less votes than it deserved
up till now, because most of it's fans don't read the newsgroups. They
have their own mailing list and therefore didn't know of the existence of
a Top 100.
Now I've come up with a temporary halfway solution. The new votes for
Falcon 3.0 are used, but with a lesser weight. It's not such a beautiful
solution, but it's the best I could find within the 24 hours I had,
before the new chart had to be compiled. You can see the result in the
new Top 100. Falcon 3.0 has climbed from 18 to number 14.
That's it. I'm ready for a new crisis now.
