AUTHORITIES IN AUSTRALIA TRACE BLACK PANTHERS
"A State Government's inquiry" in Australia "has found that it is 'more likely than not' a colony of 'big cats' are roaming Sydney's outskirts and beyond."
"The revelations are the results of a four-month investigation into the 'black panther phenomenon' which for years has plagued residents across Sydney's West, Northwest, Richmond, the Blue Mountains and Lithgow" in the state of New South Wales (NSW)."
"While National Parks and Wildlife officials are yet to implement a positive course of action, a senior source confirmed last night," Saturday, November 1, 2003, "a big cat expert has been contacted with a view to future work."
"He said: 'While we still haven't got conclusive evidence that the creatures exist, compiled evidence points strongly to the fact that it does.'"
"Although big cat sightings across NSW date back more than 100 years, speculation intensified in May 2001 when a successful Freedom of Information request revealed the NSW Government had been maintaining a secret file on the creature."

PHANTOM PANTHERS SIGHTED IN FLORIDA AND CALIFORNIA
"A search for a lion on the loose could end up being a wild goose chase." But on "Sunday night," November 2, 2003, "eyewitnesses in Leesburg, Florida (population 15,956) claimed they saw a 300-pound lion on Pembroke Drive in the Stock subdivision."
"Now Leesburg police believe this may all be a misunderstanding, a cat tale spinning out of control."
"Sunday night they received reports of a lion on the loose, but they still have no proof."
"Eyewitnesses told them that an elderly lady knocked on their door and told them she'd lost her 'big cat.' She never called it a lion. She said it jumped out of her car and ran away."
"Hours later, the eyewitnesses swear they saw a 300- pound lion lying on the driveway next to their car. Word of the sighting gradually spread through the neighborhood, and folks immediately began taking extra precautions."
"'When I came out to get my paper, I looked both ways and hurried up and got back in the house,' says Betty Kitchen."
"However, police find it funny (strange) that no one has stepped forward to claim the 'big cat.' And the fact that there are no (paw) prints and no other sightings make them very skeptical."
"A helicopter did fly over the subdivision Monday afternoon," November 3, 2003, but the reported lion was not spotted from the air.
Leesburg, Fla. is on Highway 44 about 40 miles (64 kilometers) northwest of Orlando.
On the USA's West Coast, residents of Santa Cruz, California (population 54,593) "have heard the 'blood- curdling screams' and saw what's left of a deer after an apparent (mountain) lion attack."
"Judy Dorosin has changed her morning jogging routine since hearing a mountain lion attack on a deer just outside her house in the Las Barrancas neighborhood, off San Andreas Road near the ocean."
"Dorosin said she and her husband were shocked on Friday night a month ago when they heard an animal being chased outside their bedroom window."
"'We could hear the hoofbeats of a deer,' she said, 'Then we heard the cougar (puma in UK--J.T.) scream. It sounded like a woman dying.'"
"The next morning, in their neighbor's yard, they found the carcass of a deer. (California) Department of Fish and Game workers determined the deer had been killed by a mountain lion, she said."
"Worker Steve Schindler said he responded to three calls about mountain lions Friday," October 31, 2003. "Another one in Dorosin's neighborhood, one on Zayante Road near Felton (population 4,692) and another in Los Gatos (population 28,592)."

"He said the cats are known to roam the wooded areas of (Santa Cruz) county, and, although Dorosin's house is in a neighborhood of about 40 others, it is surrounded by 'prime mountain lion' habitat, he said."
"While the number of lions that live in the county is unknown, Schindler estimated it at 10 to 15. He said the cats, which roam alone, don't often come in contact with humans."
Santa Cruz County is on the north shore of Monterey Bay, approximately 72 miles (115 kilometers) south of San Francisco. DIAMOND-SHAPED UFO SEEN IN FELICITY, OHIO
For nearly two weeks, Bob Ridener watched a strange- looking UFO hover over his hometown of Felicity, Ohio (population 922) every night between 2:30 a.m. and 5:30 a.m.
The sightings began on Thursday, October 16, 2003,
Bob reported, "I watched bright lights--blue, green, white and red--spinning, making the object very noticeable in the night sky. Vanished eventually and would appear again. It would hold in one position for 10 to 15 minutes and then, with a bat of an eye, it would move from the west to the south. That would be from the front of my house to the backyard."
"I first saw it in July on almost every clear night. Observed for several weeks from July 2003 to (Tuesday) October 28, 2003. Finally got a camcorder out to see if it would show at night. While viewing the tape, I saw several suspicious images."
"The colors listed seemed to be in a 'ball' of colors underneath" the object, and, "from my view, it would appear it was kind of diamond-shaped."
Felicity is on Ohio Route 756, located 40 miles (64 kilometers) southeast of Cincinnati. (Email Form Report) (Editor's Note: Ten miles (16 kilometers) southeast of Felicity, and just across the Ohio River, is Augusta, Kentucky, where strange artifacts and giant human bones were found in 1792.)
LUMINOUS BLUE UFO SIGHTED IN OREGON
On Friday, October 24, 2003, at 7:30 p.m., the witness was driving near Monmouth, Oregon (population 7,741) and "waiting for PBS Radio to come on with Fresh Air. As I turned off Clow Corner Road and onto the highway (99W--J.T.) going to Monmouth and Independence (population 6,035), I saw what looked to be a very large star. I could not see the outline or any shape."
"I drove about another mile and the light changed to like you're looking at a diamond's side view. It was still lit up but not so bright as before."
"As I glanced up a few times, the color changed-- different shades of blue but not shiny. After it changed to maybe five or six shades, it turned white but not shiny. As it turned white, the light strobed about 10 times and then went out."
"As I passed, I saw two other cars sitting by the side of the road. I don't know if they were watching it or not. As I drove home about two miles, I kept looking for the light but never saw it again."
"This area up to McMinnville (population 26,500) is known for seeing odd things. That city is north. What I saw was in the southwest, I would say about 45 to 55 degrees" above the horizon. "I could not tell how far away it was."

TRIO SPOTS A UFO NEAR PARKERSBURG, W.V.
Three people spotted a UFO about seven miles (11 kilometers) west of Parkersburg, West Virginia (population 33,100) on Saturday evening, November 1, 2003.
According to Mark, an eyewitness, the sighting took place at 5:30 p.m. on State Route 47 and "was witnessed by three people."
Ohio ufologist Kenny Young reported, "Just after parking their car in a friend's driveway around 5:30 p.m., Mark and his wife had gotten out of the car and spotted an unusual object in the eastern sky."
"Mark stood in the driveway and asked his wife to go inside the house to get their friend to witness the object also."
"The object, Mark said, had a smooth and consistent steady glow that was white in color, not a brilliant silver-white but a dirty, fuzzy, off-white hue. It did not have soft or diffused edges but had clearly defined edges."
"The UFO, from his perspective, was perhaps as big as a 2-inch (5-centimeter) object held in his fingers at arm's length."
"'The object was like a dome on a half-round bubble,' Mark said, 'I could see it crisp and crystal clear. The bottom edge was horizontal, flat. It had a rock-steady motion of flight. There was no shake or wobble.'"
"Mark said the object was flying along at the speed and height that an average low-flying aircraft would move across the sky, not abnormally quick."
"The object was first seen in the eastern sky at an estimated 30 degrees" above the horizon "and had a (flight) path from south to north. As the object continued its flight, Mark walked to the end of the driveway to get out of the trees and see it from a clearing. By this time, however, the object had departed to the north. GREEN FIREBALL SEEN BY CROWD IN SOUTH CAROLINA
On Monday, October 20, 2003, at 8:30 p.m., Luis A. Torres reported, "while attending a local recreation center soccer (futbol in South America--J.T.) game" at Dogwood Park in Goose Creek, South Carolina (population 29,208), I felt pressure on my neck and decided to turn my head and see if I could relax and loosen up. Then, as I turned my head, I saw something falling from the sky. I said to the others around me, 'Look at that!'"
"They did, and we started speculating as to what it might be. Less than a minute later, it had disappeared from sight."
"I made the comment: 'I hope those are military aircraft going next to it, as they are way too close together to be civilians.'"
Luis described the object as "a 'ball of fire' over 15 meters (65 feet) wide, teardrop shape, no noise, but I think it must have been over 40 meters (132 feet) long, bright blue in the middle and green all over the rest. No residual trail appeared behind it."

LARGE TRIANGULAR UFO SEEN IN PENNSYLVANIA
On Monday, November 3, 2003, Frank Scasselatti "sighted a large triangular-shaped UFO in the town of Dunmore, Pennsylvania (population 14,018). I was visiting my fiancee, who lives in Dunmore. It was 6:30 in the evening, and we were traveling to the local Sunoco gas station to fill my fiancee's car with gas. (petrol in UK-- J.T.)."
"We were near the Dunmore Cemetery, close to the Sunoco gas station, when we noticed a large, triangular- shaped UFO in the evening sky. It was black or dark in color, with three huge, glowing lights on each edge of the triangle. The object was approximately 500 feet (150 meters) in length and less than 300 feet (90 meters) above ground. The object did not move. It remained motionless in the clear sky."
"My fiancee also saw the UFO. She was driving her Toyota Corolla" to the gas station, and "I was a passenger in the front seat of the car. My fiancee and I gazed in amazement at the wondrous vehicle. My fiancee exclaimed, 'What is that!? It doesn't look like an airplane. It's not moving. Maybe it's a UFO.'"
"I agreed with her. As we entered the Sunoco gas station, I rolled down my window and put my head outside to get a better view. But the UFO had vanished. It was nowhere to be seen."
The sighting is being investigated by John Perulka, author of The Secret of Olyphant. Since 1970, there have been numerous UFO and Men in Black (MIB) sightings in that area of Pennsylvania, notably the towns of Jessup, Dunmore and Olyphant, and Perulka has been compiling data on all of these sightings.

TWO UFOs AND A CATTLE MUTILATION REPORTED IN ARGENTINA
On Saturday, November 1, 2003, two luminous discs "were seen floating over the city of Buenos Aires," Argentina's capital, "in the plain light of day."
"One of the two objects was floating near the moon for several minutes, while the other accelerated swiftly to the northern end of the city," the neighborhoods of Dorrego and Frederico Larco, "where it too remained stationary for several minutes. Then the two UFOs flew slowly (north) towards Tigre and the Rio Parana in formation."
"This flight was videotaped by Argentinian observers on the ground, who captured 10 minutes of video footage," ufologist Ricardo E. D'Angelo reported.
Also last week, "a cattle mutilation was reported in Rio Cuarto province," about 400 kilometers (250 miles) southwest of Buenos Aires, "on a ranch leased by Sra. Viviana Olivares. The cow was found in a canyon 25 meters (83 feet) deep and 9.3 meters (31 feet) wide."
Midway through Canyon El Naranjo "there lay a female bovine 5 to 6 years old, mixed breed, black in color, lying on its right side and showing the initial signs of putrefaction. Missing were the left eye, the tongue, the left ear, all of the facial tissues." However, the cow's tail and reproductive organs were not disturbed.
"There were no signs of violence or that the body had spasms of agony prior to death, such as kicking or rolling on the ground. There was no sign of any bloodflow, nor visible wounds on the bovine's body."
"The dead bovine was found by Carlos Elias Berardo, 17, who said, 'I was returning from Las Albahacas along with Ramon Olivares when we saw the fallen animal in Canyon El Naranjo. Upon approaching, we could see that it was a mixed-breed cow some 6 years of age.'"

STRANGE DEATH REPORTED IN "BRIDGEWATER TRIANGLE"
"An Abington, Mass. woman, driving and talking on her cell phone, died after her car plowed into a cell phone store" in West Bridgewater, Massachusetts (population 2,100).
"Bethaney Lawton, 20, was not wearing a seat belt when her car crashed into a Cingular Wireless building shortly before 1 a.m. on Saturday," November 1, 2003, "Officer Thomas Richmond said."
"'She was on a cell phone, talking to a friend,' Richmond said, 'She told her friend, 'I'm about to get into an accident.' The friend heard the crash. The phone went dead.'"
"Lawton swerved to avoid hitting a utility pole, crossed into the oncoming lane and crashed into the building, Richmond said."
"The car was three-quarters (75 percent) into the building, and it took 20 minutes to free her from the wreckage, according to Fire Chief Leonard Hunt. She died while undergoing surgery at Boston Medical Center."
"Police said Lawton was alone in her car after dropping off a friend in Bridgewater. She was studying to be an emergency medical technician at Massasoit Community College."
The alleged "Bridgewater Triangle" encompasses "an area of about 200 square miles" in southeastern Massachusetts "and includes the towns of Abington, Rehoboth and Freetown as the points of the Triangle. Within the Triangle are Bridgewater, West Bridgewater, North Middleboro, Segregansett, Dighton, North Dighton, Berkeley, Myricks, Raynham, East Taunton and Taunton. Central to the area is the mysterious Hockomock Swamp, which Native Americans called 'the Devil's Swamp.' The first UFO sighted in Bridgewater was in 1760."
Curiously, Ms. Lawton's death occurred on the 95th anniversary of Bridgewater's most famous UFO sighting--the Philip S. Prophett-John E. Flynn case of 1908. (See the Brockton, Mass. MYSTERIOUS OBJECTS ALSO SEEN IN REPUBLIC, MISSOURI
Concerning the recent UFO sightings in Missouri (See UFO Roundup volume 8, number 41, "Three white UFOs seen in Aurora, Missouri," page 6), ufologist Brian Adams writes, "My son, Shaun Adams, and his girlfriend saw something similar on Saturday, September 27, 2003 at noon over Republic, Mo.(population 8,438). They were driving west on Highway 60 and they both said they saw these rapidly moving white dots very high up in the sky--except they saw a dozen or so of them."
"They watched them through the car windshield while driving towards Aurora, Mo. They said the objects disappeared after just a few minutes."
"I wonder if it's possible they could be connected with something about the large solar flares that have been occurring recently."
"I just read a story about the ISS (International Space Station--J.T.) astronaut who observed some unusual lights with flashes during recent auroras while in orbit above the Earth. It's as likely an explanation about these white objects, it seems to me."

2003: HAUNTS A-PLENTY IN MOTHMAN COUNTRY
"Moviegoers viewing Scary Movie 3 at the Keith-Albee Theater in Huntington, West Virginia (population 51, 475) might receive more of a fright than they bargained for, especially if they are female and have imbibed a bit too much liquid refreshment from the concession stand."
"The stairway leading to the ladies' room is thought by many to be haunted 'an overwhelming presence that follows you until you enter one of the stalls,' according to a poster on www.wvghost.com."
"'I don't believe it,' Doug Riggs of Huntington said, 'But then again, I've never been in the ladies' room at the Keith-Albee.'"
"Spooky stories, tales of hauntings and sightings of strange beings are fairly common, but in October, especially late October, such activity increases as imaginations run wild during the approach of Halloween. The Tri-State area (in this case, northwestern West Virginia, southeastern Ohio and eastern Kentucky--J.T.) features its fair share of ghost stories and the like, many more humorous than bone-chilling."
"Probably no story is more well-known than that of Mothman, the moth-like, seven-foot (2.2-meter) creature with glowing red eyes said to terrorize residents near Point Pleasant, West Virginia (population 4,637)," a town on the Ohio River about 25 miles (40 kilometers) north of Huntington. "Tales of the regional spook sparked the (2002) movie, The Mothman Prophecies."
"The Mothman was at his height during the 1960s and the 1970s when he was repeatedly sighted several times near West Virginia (Route) 2 along the Ohio River. Some claimed that the creature jumped onto their cars. No hard evidence has been found of the Mothman's existence, but Point Pleasant has profited from the rumor, selling thousands of dollars worth of Mothman merchandise during local celebrations."
But "Mothman Country" has other spooks which are not as well known.
"Brenda Lambert, a worker at Rebels and Redcoats, a restaurant within the Colonial Lanes building in west Huntington, said she is convinced the bowling facility is haunted. Lambert said she and others have seen a swinging door near the bar open and close on its own."
"'There was a presence,' Lambert said, 'It gave us chills.'"
"Others said they've heard footsteps in an upstairs room when no one was in the room, along with singing from a woman who was nowhere to be seen. The supposed ghost, Lambert said, appeared more playful than threatening, turning on electrical switches and such."
"Legend has Marshall University's Old Main (building) haunted by a girl who was said to have leaped to her death from a third floor window. But then, Old Main is a prime target for anyone who wants to believe in ghosts, thanks to its creaky floorboards and dark hallways."
"Several Huntington houses, including a house on Fifth Street in Guayandotte and on South Boulevard are said by some to be haunted."
"Mary Jo Plymale of Huntington, wrote that the old Jefferson School on 19th Street West, is haunted by a shadowy figure on the stairs."
"'Who was the ghost?' Plymale wrote, 'Could it be a former student who grew up, died and came back to the place where he'd spent many a happy hour? Could it be a former principal who wanted to see his old domain?'"
"Huntington doesn't have a monopoly on area ghost stories."
"The woods near Wayne, W.V. (population 1,105)," a town on Route 37 about 20 miles (32 kilometers) south of Huntington, "are said to be haunted by a group of people who 'talk backwards' and a creature similar to the famed Bigfoot."

"Further into Wayne County, near Hewlett Branch Road in Ft. Gay (population 819)," also on Highway 37 about 15 miles (25 kilometers) southwest of Wayne, "Bigfoot-like beings have allegedly been spotted for years."
Southeastern "Ohio has its scary tales, too. One persistent rumor has a little Indian girl roaming the hills of Bradrick," a town on Route 7 just north and across the Ohio River from Huntington, W.V., "sometimes throwing rocks at people who pass by."

"Another story that never seems to end is the existence of a panther in the hills of Union Township, near Chesapeake," a town on the north bank of the Ohio River, on Route 52 four miles (6 kilometers) west of Bradrick.

"'I remember seeing something when I was a kid,' said James McComas, who grew up on a farm in a rural area of Union Township. 'It looked like a panther, and it slipped into the bushes. I don't know what it was.'"
"Said panther also was reported seen on Greasy Ridge before slipping into the Bent Creek area in the 1960s."
"A haunted cave is said to exist near Ironton," Ohio (population 11,211), also on Route 52 on the north bank of the Ohio River about 20 miles (32 kilometers) northwest of Huntington, W.V., "with strange noises and voices coming from it."

"And Gallia County (Ohio) is a haven for ghost stories. Knox Hollow, an area between Bidwell and Vinton," two towns on Route 160 about 20 miles (32 kilometers) northwest of Point Pleasant, W.V., "is said to be haunted by twins who drowned in a creek there in the 1930s."

"One of the more interesting stories from Gallia County is that, not of a ghost, but of a house that was said to have appeared out of nowhere on the lawn of the Crown City Methodist Church in 1953."
Crown City, Ohio is on Route 7, a riverfront town located about 25 miles (40 kilometers) south of Point Pleasant, W.V.
"The single-story house with a large bush in front was said to have appeared numerous times. Not everyone believes it."
"'I've never seen it,' Paul Branner said, 'I've lived or worked in or around Crown City for years, and I've always heard that story. If you drink enough liquor, I suppose you can see anything you want to see.'"
(Editor's Comment: The spectral house is a rare phenomenon in Forteana. One was actually photographed in Wales. I can't help wondering if, back in 1953, a scientist from a parallel Earth, experimenting with teleportation, somehow managed to send his house into "our" universe.)
"The famed Our House Museum in Gallipolis," Ohio (population 4,180), across the river from Point Pleasant, W.V., "was built in 1819 and was once a tavern. Visitors claim to hear footsteps in the foyer, and a woman singing in a second floor room."
"In Lawrence County, the old Monitor School in Coal Grove," (population 2,027), a town on Route 52 about 12 miles (19 kilometers) downriver from Chesapeake, Ohio, "is said to be plagued by lights turning on and off by themselves."
"Tales long have been told about the haunting of the Briggs Public Library in Ironton, Ohio. Dr. Joseph Lowry, whose home stood on the library's current site, died in 1933 and was said to have met a grisly burial preparation from an undertaker who had quarreled with him."
"Some claim Dr. Lowry roams the library with his mother searching for his lost body parts."
(Editor's Comment: Curiously, a short story on this topic was written by H.P. Lovecraft and appeared in Weird Tales during this time period. Was Lovecraft influenced by the Lowry case? Or vice versa?)
"Lowry also is said to walk the Woodlawn Cemetery" in Ironton, "where he is buried, but must share the spotlight (spooklight?--J.T.) with other supposed ghosts there.
