Doom Does have an absolute crisp killing feel. I have deathmatched in
Hexen several times now and besides the newness of the game, the excitement
and competitve primal killing urge is lost when you're using melee type
weapons that spew out energy pulses
more like a laser gun than the thick thunk of a double barrel shotgun. The
entire level is filled full of floating junk during deathmatch which combines
with the fuzzy walls to create a bloody mess to the eyes. It does no good to
porculate someone if you can't find them afterwords. A crossbow that fires a
standard looking bolt into someones forehead would, in my opinion, be much
more satisfying. Hexen is cool, but I think much of the games fun is just
cruisin around and checking things out.

Hey a new idea from me! My first in *weeks*!
In Heretic, if a room is big enough, you could lay it out like this:

.-------.
|.-----.|
|| .-. ||
|| | | || The whole thing is a *big* hall (512 length outer walls).
|| '-' || The inner one is an island, while the middle is water.
|'-----'| The watery area has winds, that all point to the safe area.
'-------' Then in deathmatch, when one person stands on the island, they can
stand on the island and fire their Hellstaff repeatedly, and they will be
surrounded by a pretty ring.... OF DEATH!!!

(Apologies if this idea has been used before, but I only got Heretic the day-b4
yesterday).
