The only way to fool doom into starting a two-player cooperative game, in
my opinion, would be to set up a fake serial/net driver to replace
SERSETUP/IPXSETUP. You would just have to figure out the format of the
net packets (anyone know?) and have the fake serial/net driver simply
emulate a player that is standing still. I don't think there would be
any other difficulties except emulating a net player that was not moving.
If you succeeded in doing this, you could then hit F12 to see out the
perspective of your "camera" during cooperative mode. If you did it this
way, the camera would always be set at the player start for whatever net
player your fake driver was emulating. So to set the camera, you would
edit the level and place "player 2 start" at a different location and/or
direction.

This is the time for all honest man... ooops. Wrong tape.
As Steve, Arnt and me had to realize a week ago, during the
next two weeks (from Sept 1st) both caretakers as well as
the nvg.unit.no admin will not be available to you.
Thus any bounced mails, e.g. failed (un)subscriptions, and any
delivery problems will have to wait.
If you have to unsubscribe, please try mail to majordomo@nvg.unit.no,
no Subject:, body
info doom-editing
help
which
who doom-editing
who doom-editing-digest
end
The "which/who" will give you a hint on how you're actually
subscribed (just look for something that looks strikingly similar
to your account, in case "which" doesn't give a clue). Please
make sure to use the same account for unsubscription mails that
is subscribed - anything else will bounce and has to be handled
manually (read: will have to wait). Same for subscriptions:
subscribe using the account you want to use to receive doom-editing
stuff, simply
subscribe doom-editing
end
WITHOUT explicitely stating an address. Anything else will bounce
blahdeblah...
I'll handle request and bounces occuring tomorrow. If in doubt, bounce
it right now.
In case there's the familiar "confirmation/vacation/reply failure to
list" problem dumping lots of useless mails to the list, please
a) do not post complaints to the list
b) do not hope posting to doom-editing-owner is likely
to change anything on short order
c) instead post to both the users of misbehaving accounts
and postmaster@"same site as said users" asking politely
(yeah, politely) for a temporary fix
or just do DUCK'n'COVER.
If you want to keep people from having flame wars, Quake quack or anything
else, feel free to use PRIVATE mail to tell them. Do not post to the list,
even if you're right :-).
I'm sorry for any inconvenience due to this unfortunate coincidence.
Take care y'all, and rest assured, we'll be back (to deal with some 500 bounces... hmmm, perhaps we won't...).

*****************************************************************
Reluctantly approved by caretaker
- please, no followups on doom-editing
*****************************************************************
[This message has been cross-posted on several newsgroups. I am
re-posting it here because I hope that it will help reducing the
number of off-topic messages about Quake on this *Doom*-editing list.]
Greetings, fellow DOOMers (or people interested in similar games)!
As most of you should know by now, the makers of DOOM will probably have
another smash hit with QUAKE. There is already a newsgroup in which
people talk about QUAKE: alt.games.quake. Unfortunately, this newsgroup
does not have a good propagation (not many sites get it) and one newsgroup
will certainly not be sufficient for handling the expected flood of
articles that will be posted when QUAKE is released.
Several people have proposed to create some newsgroups for QUAKE,
preferably in the rec.* hierarchy in order to get a better propagation.
Since this process will take some time (RFD, CFV, votes, etc.), it is
better to start as soon as possible. A mailing list has been created
for the purpose of discussing the creation of these newsgroups. The
address of the list is:
quake-proposal@montefiore.ulg.ac.be
If you are interested in this and you want to subscribe to this list,
please send a message with the word "subscribe" in the subject or in
the body to:
quake-proposal-request@montefiore.ulg.ac.be
Please note that this mailing list is for discussing the creation of
QUAKE newsgroups, not the game itself. General discussion about the
game will be done on the newsgroups, when they are created! On this
mailing list, we will discuss the group creation process, choose the
best names for the groups and eventually write a formal RFD that will
be posted in news.groups, news.announce.newgroups, etc.
If you are not interested in this, then you should not subscribe. No
info about QUAKE will be posted on the mailing list.
When you subscribe to the list, you will receive a welcome message
which will tell you more about the mailing list, how to unsubscribe
and how to use the archive server. It would be wise to keep this
message for future reference.

No one can. What you're suggesting isn't even remotely possible. :(
DHE is designed to mess with monsters and objects, and it has some degree of
control over weapons (especially in 3.0, where you can now edit the BFG ammo
usage). But multiple players and DeathMatch are out of its scope.
The big problem is that players are controlled internally by the game, and
any "camera" would be looking for player information. DHE, unfortunately, not
only has no control over how Doom sets up a game (such as a cooperative
game), but it can't provide that missing data.
Cameras and network/modem stuff are so internal as to be untouchable. In
hacking terms, the word "radioactive" might neatly apply.
>I am also thinking about building some kind of "weapon camera" using a
similar

Same problem. Extra cameras aren't possible in DHE. This would indeed be a
cool effect, but unless you were to disassemble the code, find what you
wanted to change, change it (assuming you know what you're doing), and
reassemble it, it won't work; and even then, DHE would lose the power to edit
it, as the DOOM.EXE file would have changed in length, and offsets to data
values would certainly have shifted.
It was a nice idea, but it just can't be done. Trust me.
