Is there any way to convert DOOM/DOOM II WADs to Heretic WADs? The
enemies may not act the same way in Heretic as they do in DOOM, but it would
be like looking up/down in DOOM. Any ideas?

Subject: Ultimate Doom and WADS?
I'm hoping somebody in this group can help me with a problem.
I had Doom II but not Doom so yesterday I puchased "The Ultimate Doom" CD.
It has the three original episodes plus a bonus: Thy Flesh Consumed. It also
says Version 1.9 on start-up.
The problem is pwads and conversions such as AliensTC for 1.9. Aliens
seems to run except no monsters at all (bummer)! When I installed aliens, it
said my Doom.exe was a different size and also said "can't find 0" when I
loaded the wads.
The pwad mayan667.wad refuses to run also. It seems to try to find some
graphic flats or something but can't find them.
I've been converting doom pwads and using them for doom2 but the main
reason I bought Ultimate Doom was to be able to use the doom wads and
conversions (aliens), so now I'm stuck. I want to learn how to make my on
wads and edit, but first I'd like to be able to run the ones that are out there.
So does anybody know what the deal is? Are the exe files different?
The size of my doom.exe is 715,493 bytes; is this different from yours?
BTW, does anyone have an opinion on the "Doom Companion" CD and book for a
cherry who wants to learn how to build and edit levels?
Please post or e-mail me.
Alot to learn... but trying.

Can I put this thread to bed here please:
Apols on behalf of SAMS for the flawed CD in the first pressing of this
book: put it down to the speed with which this book was put together. The
second pressing should have the correct files on it and also the missing
tutorial files. For those of you who have already purchased the book and
want the goods as promised, the files should be available from sams ftp
site: ftp.mcp.com. I understand the files are password protected: you will
need to call SAMS to get the daily password--I believe there are details in
the /pub directory of the above site. I will try to find out more for
those who need it: please contact me direct, though, not through this list,
and I'll channel complaints to the right people at SAMS. ;)
For anyone interested generally in the contents of this book, check out

The cloned player 1's seem only to take damage from player fire: they are
not susceptible to damaging sectors, and are invisible to monsters. My
guess is that such clones are just not considered in DOOM's "is the player
somewhere where something should be happening?" loop: they just feature in
the "is there something in view to display?" and "does the flight of this
bullet/projectile intersect anything?" code [sorry about these high level
programming terms used here ;) ] This rather limits the usefulness of this
'feature' and wipes out a lot of the nice suggestions. Sorry guys.

The Ult. Doom exe is different from the regular doom 1.9 Exe. There is new
data there for the added mission as well as more text for the ending. Plus,
the wad-file size is totally different, It has 9 new levels, and a new
ending picuture.
As for getting the Aliens TC thing to work. From what I understand of
that Patch, It worked with 1.2 only (correct me if I am wrong, the one I had
preffered 1.2) Somebody needs to write a DE-patch Patch. Make 1.9's to
1.6's and so on. There are so many good add-ons that are not compatible
with the new versions, It would be nice to jump back to the older ones.

Yep, Archie needs to stand right next to corpses to resurrect them.
This also allows the Archvile to resurrect corpses that are at a a vastly
different height (at the edge of a cliff), or even THROUGH a thin wall
(seenit happen many times on Map16 right at the start).

Those actually aren't DeHackEd errors (I just checked it out). ARCHD
through ARCHF are NOT stored in the Doom2.wad file at all. I'm not sure
what exactly Doom uses in their place, but at least according to DEU's
sprite-viewer, those sprites are non-existent. Wierd.

First you'd have to convert the MAP01 to E1M1. Then you'd have to convert
all the things to there closest exquivilants in heretic. Then you'd have to
convert all the textures to heretic textures. It is a real pain.

Try DM2CONV.ZIP. It works very well for converting DOOM->DOOM2 and
DOOM->Heretic. It will even create a PWAD with the textures from DOOM that
works with Heretic.

It is intended for level designers and graphic and sound editors. It has
nothing to do with the actual doom engine coding/editing.

Question: for compatibility with all other DOOMs, why didn't id just make
Ultimate DOOM's TFC a big PWAD? Then it would load like normal, and no new
EXE is
needed. I sugegst id re-release Ulimate DOOM like this, or fix the problem.

Then they wouldn't be able to put in the ending text and stuff. After
all, why would Id want to use an exe-hacking program to put in new text

I picked up the Doom Companion about four weeks or so ago. The CD has
several pwads on it that you can play. It includes in-progress pwads
corresponding with the "Lessons". Most of the information in the book is
very educational, especially to somebody just learning how to edit wads. The
CD also gives you a choose of editors to use. The drawback is that the book
uses Waded version 1.83 in its lessons.
I know there are probably people out there that really like Waded. In some
regards I do too, but after learning how to use Deep/Heep (Deep for Doom and
Heep for Heretic) I found Waded to be additional work when creating sectors,
changing single-sided linedefs to double-sided linedefs, etc. The version of
Deep/Heep that comes on the CD is version 6.2, which is the "Special"
registered version. It works really well, but you can't print out maps, or
test launch into the Doom/Heretic program. However, I just registered with
the author to get the newest version. He just finished with Deep, but hasn't
quite finished with Heep. I should have it by next weekend. The version
7.10s, which can be downloaded is cool, but it has just a couple of small
bugs, and it has a limit on the size of the pwad you can edit and save (this
is so you will register).
If you decide to use Deep/Heep and you have any questions about how to do
something, then e-mail me if you need to. I'll be more than happy to try and
help. I hope this helps you.
