I'm not sure about that. I think each doom machine knows where the
player is going to start before he dies. For example, when you play
deathmatch with the same computers and the same network cards, I believe
the colors are always the same and you always start in the same series of
places. I may be wrong, but thats what I thought. Don't get me wrong, I
thought about working on a program like the one you are making a while ago,
but I never even started. I think it would be really neat, but also VERY
hard to do. Good luck...

Thanks to Denis as well. (what did you think of the wad, by the way?)

I accept these comments, but if I cut out that section and paste it to
another level, it runs fine! Doesn't this sound a bit odd to anyone?
There's no massive distance that you can suddenly see either (I had that one
before). So what's going on?

Hi Bill

3 days of reading isn't much. Maybe you haven't seen
the weekly posted "beginner guideline" by the list caretaker.
It instructs beginners to send their questions to Steve Benner (S.Benner@Lancaster.ac.uk),
at least until they're sure their question hasn't been asked before.

I can see that you're the author of a good text.
I've referred several people to your document when they asked me
stupid questions. Good job...

I don't know if there is a FAQ. Instead people should read the docs
about editing available from ftp.cdrom.com.
If you only have Email access that would of course be a problem.
How did you get HANBK uploaded? (I can only see HANBK11 on the ftp site)

[sorry I don't know the answer to question number2]

I haven't checked in UAC_DEAD, but I've written a WWW page about
special effects, so if you can DL WWW pages you should take a look
at the URL:

http://www.daimi.aau.dk/~hykkelbj/doom/special/special.html#stair

If you can't download that, I'll try to explain it fast:

Make a sector with an internal sector:

x-------x
1
x--x
| |2 | |
x--x

x-------x

Now make ALL the sector references in the internal sector point to the
internal sector itself. Meaning that the sector references on both the
left and right side of the "internal" lines should point to sector 2
(in the above example).
Now the floor will be painted in the height of sector 1, while the player will
walk in the floor height of sector 2.

This is explained more thoroughly in my WWW page...

Why not just make the level map18?
OK maybe you have your reasons, so the answer is:

Yes and no...

This was discussed almost half a year ago, when people started ripping
off DOOM graphics. At the time Jay Wilbur said something like:

NO you can't. DOOM is a copyrighted product of id Software,
and parts of it must not be used without the consent of id Soft.

But he also said that they probably wouldn't do anything about it if you
went ahead and used the music.

As far as I see it id Software is only trying to protect themselves.
They can't allow us to rip off the graphics and the music, because
then some company could do the same, build a complete IWAD, and
sell it to people who only had the shareware version of DOOM.
In fact I think that as long as you make sure your WAD can only be played
with a registered version of DOOM, you're pretty safe. id is aware of
the fact that all the WADs around has increased the value of DOOM a lot,
so as long as the WAD demands a registered version I think id will stay happy.

>I hope the answers to these aren't in the FAQ. Thanks for your
>time and any future answers!

I'm sure Steve Benner would have answered them better than
I just have.
(I'm quite sure he WILL answer when he gets back from his little vacation)
And as far as future questions are concerned: ask away :)

>... You play one-player games?! What's wrong with your modem?

It's 2400 baud...

Jens Hykkelbjerg
Ok since you wrote what you did (HANBK) I'll do the same:
Author of: RMB & The special effects WWW page.
