The new one seems pretty safe though far from bulletprof. I
could accually save a file with out it crashing on me... needless to say
after the last version I was impressed. I used to have to use the dos
ver to do error checking (to Ben Morris: DCK's error dection isn't the
greatest it's almost as good as DOOMCAD's ;)

Ok, Ok. What is the big attraction with DEU ? I tried it and found
it to be slow and hard to use. Is there something
that I'm missing ? It seems to be the most popular editor around, so I thought
it might be worth learning to use (I'm using DCK2.2 at the moment, but it
doens't work under Win95).

Matthew - here is why I use DEU -well DETH now, but it is
essentially DEU. It gives you COMPLETE control over architecture
- - you can allocate new vertices and linedefs to whatever sector,
it is very straight foward when you know how, and although it is
slightly slower than DCK2.2 etc, get a P90 and you won't mind
the difference :) That total control is a must for me. D.Casali

OK. HOLD IT RIGHT THERE. NO EDITOR WARS HERE PLEASE. Please confine these
topics to the appropriate newsgroup.
Thanks.

It mostly worked, and allows you to change anything (fairly quickly). Of
course it had a million bugs, but they could have been fixed (hell, I could
have fixed them if I could have gotten it to compile, bloody suck-ass
compilers).
I liked DEU so much I wrote the PFME to have a similar interface. Raphael
liked it so much he is still in the process of writing a new editor with a
similar interface >:)

About the compilers problem... I re-wrote most of the core of DEU 5.3 in order
to make it very portable. Currently, the source code will compile and run
under the following systems:
- - PC running DOS, with DJGPP (GCC + GO32) using GRX graphics and BCC2GRX,
- - PC running DOS, with Turbo C or Borland C using BGI graphics,
- - PC running DOS, with Watcom C (DOS4/GW),
- - Silicon Graphics (SGI), with CC (and maybe GCC) using GL graphics,
- - Most UNIX systems (including PC running Linux), with GCC or any
ANSI-compatible CC, using X Window (X11R4, X11R5 or X11R6).
Ports to OS/2 and Windows (WinDEU 5.3) are in development. Since I would
like to make sure that anybody who has a C compiler can hack into DEU and
compile it on almost any machine, I would like to add more systems/compilers
to this list.
If anyone has Microsoft C and would be interested in porting DEU 5.3 to
MS-C, then please let me know. I would also like to know if someone out
there has some experience with VMS + DecWindows. Please be serious about
it: I don't want to be flooded with requests from people who just want to
have a look at the latest beta version. It will be released this week
anyway, so there is no need to bother me about it.
Also, I would like to have DEU running on the Mac. This will be more
difficult than the other ports (because of the differences in the file
system and graphics stuff), but I think that it can be done by someone who
has a good knowledge of the Mac. If you are this person, then I would be
glad to hear from you. DEU should run on every platform on which Doom runs.
And since MacDoom will be released soon, it's time to have a good editor
for the Mac.

Well, the "new editor" is still DEU. And if you look closely at the code
for DEU 5.3, you will probably see some bits and pieces coming from
DEU 5.21. :-)

I don't know who you mean by `Matthew', but I'm a card-carrying DEU'er
myself. I haven't bothered to create any levels for Doom II, though,
because all of the DEU hacks for Doom II that I've seen (Deu2C, ADE2,
etc.) have their faults (for instance, Deu2C doesn't have all/correct
names for the different things/linedefs/etc.; ADE2 is just plain buggy).
Please tell me, where can I get DETH?

DEU does everything, and in a direct DOS like manner (extensive use
of the insert/delete keys and such. You can do almost everything with the
keyboard, using the MOUSE just to select and position things).
