Instead of putting out whole WADs, seeing the announcement by the author
of some "special effect," then scurrying around looking for the effect...
why don't you just make a small 2 or 3 room WAD with only the special
effect? Or how about a collection tacked together into one level like
the DOOM Handbook? (It contains effects and ASCII art to label what each
room has.) Now back to our regular program....

Subject: Re: (Floor) drawing issues

> misc. not necessarily pointless speculations

I'm pretty sure a lot of the stuff is common knowledge (see e.g.
the PC Game Programmers Encyclopedia on x2ftp.oulu.fi,
comp.graphics.algorithms or even the more valuable
rec.games.programmers threads). While I'm still confused about
the different ways to determine floor drawing order, I think
the other stuff has been figured out more than a year ago
already.

You do walls/sprites/weapons/sky vertically, you do floors/ceilings
horizontally. You'll need two different texture mapping functions.

You do sprites and partly transparent walls (transparency
determined by 2S lines, NOT by an opaqueness flag on the
texture - I'd do it the other way round) back-to-front.

You do walls front-to-back, on a per-SEG basis, for each
seg you'll do lower and/or upper, or middle (if 1S). If there's
a 2S middle, you have to do the top/bottom clipping for
each column, but you'll draw the vertical slices later on, as
soon as anything behind this is drawn (clipping against
stuff in front of the sprite is done already).

As for the floors, there seem to be three possibilities:

a) BACK-TO-FRONT (proposed by Richard Matthias)
put them on a stack during front-to-back traversal.
Do not draw the walls, just store the clipped slice data
somewhere as well. If the screen will be filled using
the walls stored so far, do the floors back-to-front
per SECTOR, as non-convex polygons (scanline), painters
algorithm. Draw the clipped wall slices and sprites
as soon as you've done the floors. The floors will
"shine through" the gaps between the walls.
It's wasteful, but simple. If I understand Ted Vessenes'
observation, DOOM might just do this. It should be
possible to create a screenshot with floors-only, no
walls yet drawn. Run it on a 286, I guess :-).

b) FRONT-TO-BACK using Segs (proposed by Jonathan Mavor)
during front-to-back traversal, handle walls per SEG and
draw them immediately. Reuse the upper/lower line traversals
do determine start or end points of possible horizontal
floor slices. You store the starts, as soon as you
got a fitting end, you'll traverse the slice and compare
with current top/bottom to find the parts that are already
hidden behind walls/other floors. Each time a wall/floor
intersects the current slice, you'll got a span from the
last start to this point, and draw it.
I can only guess that the per-pixel lookup of top/bottom
is the major drawback of this approach. Even if method (a)
draws > 3*(number of visible floor pixels) for each
frame, because of floors hidden behind walls, or because
of floors obscuring other floors, you might still not gain
anything. If the number of multiply drawn pixels is a lot
larger in average, you' surely better off.

c) FRONT-TO-BACK using convex SSECTORS (how I wanted to do it)
it's not that different from (b), but the basic idea is
to restrict top/bottom compares to the borders of the
SSECTOR. Obviously this won't work with ID BSP, due to the
missing edges created by partition lines, and missing vertices
that would indicate paritition line crossings). The idea is to
traverse the upper (far away) edges of the SSECTOR and the
lower (front) edges from leftmost to rightmost vertex, creating
starts of horizontal slices on a stack. As soon as there
are intersections indicated by top/bottom, or one reaches
the "right" edges (segs normal would point left, just check

BAM angles), the traversal creates ends instead of starts,
you'll get the right start from the stack, and draw the slice.
Thus top/bottom comparisons are done only for border pixels.
The edge traversal re-uses calculations from the wall drawing
as well. Using the nearest and the farest vertex, you only
calculate z interpolation stuff and lighting once for each
screen row. The drawback is that merging the loop with
drawing the walls, and drawing ceilings (exploiting symmetries)
ends up with pretty complicated loops. Thus I'm not sure this
will really work. Iff, you'd save a lot of top/bottom checks,
compared to (b). For general 3D mapping, you'll have to use
a top/bottom list (or left/right list), as lower-middle-upper
restrictions won't apply, but this method should allow for
rendering arbitrary (convex or decomposed) polygons front-to-back.

> Robert Fenske wrote:

> But I would think that there must be some front-to-back
>processing; otherwise, the game should be the same speed regardless of how
>many textures are on the screen.

Note that each method is front-to-back at least with respect to
aborting BSP traversal as soon as bookkepping indicates the screen
will be filled completely by the stuff seen so far. This is in
fact essential to get frame rates independend of total map size.
You won't gain that much from a BSP without this.

The point that bothers me most is if DOOM really uses (a), or something
else I haven't thought of. If it's (a), perhaps I'm overestimating the
average overhead of re-drawing lots of floors pixels, compared to complicated
bookkeeping. It just doesn't look right. Guess I'm up to track down a
slow machine. If only Ted Vessenes had made a screenshot...

B.

P.S.: I still have no idea how to merge in the sprites with only
"ThingIsInSector" available. But that's another story.
