Hi All,

I would like to offer something (for nothing, no catch ;-) to all of the

authors of utilities and addons for Doom and Heretic programs. Below
you will find a text version of an offer form that will be available on
DoomGate (http://doomgate.cs.buffalo.edu/) when the final updates are done.
It will happen real soon now... you know TWO WEEKS ;-)

I would like to appologize for using this list for this mail but I feel that
most of the people who will benefit are you guys so read on. Oh at the end
I also included a 'HOW TO MAKE MONEY ON THIS FAST' message... yeah right ;-).

In any case if you have any comments please send them directly to me as I
am unable to subscribe to this list due to the mail overload I have been
suffering for quite a while now ;-)

Hope this helps you guys,

- - -Kapi (kapis-p@doomgate.cs.buffalo.edu)

PS. If you find it useful and try to submit stuff real quick please be ready
for about a week delay since I am horribly backed up on my DoomGate duties and
a constant increase in its popularity is basically killing the machine ;-)
New one is comming up though.

DoomGate Offer

--------------------------------------------------------

Introduction

Due to an ever growing number of various utilities and addon programs for Doom,
Doom ][ and Heretic users are asking me questions about features and
capabilities of each of them. I belive that the best qualified people to answer
these questions are their authors and thus this new project.

To make a long story short I would like to extend an offer to all writers of
utilities and addon products for the games mentioned above to write their own
short one page introductions for the users. DoomGate will contain an index of
all the programs available and you will be able to create your own
'advertisment' page and have it here for others to see.

This page you create can contain any relevant information about your utility as
long as they are not directly hostile to any other utility as I do not want to
have any flame wars starting due to your critique of someone else's work.

You will have complete control over that page meaning you can update it at any
time just be sending me the new version or have it removed at any time also by
sending me a piece of mail asking for it to be removed.

Simple guidelines on how to do each of these things can be found below. They
are here to help both me and you make any changes and updates quickly and
smoothly so please read them carefully.

What To Do

Create one page that describes your program. Do not include the whole manual
for it as people will generally not read it past the point of what they can see
on their first screen.

- - From my observations you should include information about what it is that your
program does and general information on who it does it. Do not include too much
technical stuff as the users can find it in other places better suited for that
kind of information.

You can include any URL type links in your page to point the users to various
sources if you wish. If you include links to an FTP site that contains your
utility and basically give the user an easy way of 'click and its yours' type
of grabbing the file make sure that the site really has that file in the
location you specify. In general it might be better to clearly state the name
of the program (ie myutil.zip) and provide a URL to and FTP site but one that
ends in the directory where the file is rather then the file itself. This will
allow you to update the version of your file without actually having to update
the page along with it.

You can include images in your page either directly by submiting GIF format
images or via a URL type referece to the site that has them available. If you
choose to include the GIF files along with your submission please make sure
that the GIF images are interlaced and that the largest of them is not bigger
then 200x200 pixels. This size is not very strict but as a general rule long
images take longer to load for people on slow links and in many case users
don't wait for them to load in the first place. In addition if you include
image files and reference them from your page each image must be located in the
current directory. The reason is quite simple. Each program will be contained
in its own subdirectory and thus only images accessible in that directory will
show up. Here is an example:

%ls
myutil.html
mygif1.gif
mygif2.gif

Inside the myutil.html file you would reference those images using the
following line:

...img src="./mygif1.gif"...
...img src="./mygif2.gif"...

If you are a bit lost here on the HTML format please do not send me questions
regarding it as there are many better sources of information available.

What To Do

There are only two ways you can submit your files. One is via EMAIL and the
other is via FTP. Choose which ever one you prefer but please read the
instructions careful since the submissions which are unreadable or which
contain errors will not be accepted.

The EMAIL way

If you are only submiting an HTML file and no images just mail it as a regular
mail and I will cut the headers out and create a regular file out of it.

If you are submiting a .zip file via mail here is what you will need to do.
After you create the .zip archive run a uuencode program on it to produce a
uuencoded file ready for email transport. Mail me that file. Please DO NOT use
any attach type features which are available in many email programs as most of
them are not compatible with the UNIX MIME format and I cannot separate the zip
file from the message. If you do that the email will simply be ignored. Sorry
but there is not much I can do with it.

Please send all the mail to the following address and include the following
header in the Subject line to make it stand out a bit.

To: kapis-p@doomgate.cs.buffalo.edu
Subject: ADD

Also again please don't send me mail asking me exactly how to use uuencode as
you can find that information on the net or from your system administrator.

The FTP Way

If you choose to submit you files via FTP deposit them on DoomGate in the
incoming directory. Once you have done that please send me mail using the
format above notifying me that you did so and stating what the filename is and
what utility it refers to. The will speed things along.

The address of DoomGate is doomgate.cs.buffalo.edu
And the incoming dir is /incoming

Please do not send an archive of your program along with the information as
DoomGate is not a primary site and I only mirror ftp.cdrom.com here. That is
also the site that all new updates should be send to.

Misc

For those who already have pages on the net related to their programming of
Doom please follow the instructions above and send me mail with the URL to your
site to have entries here updated to reflect where the information can be
obtained.

All comments should be sent to kapis-p@doomgate.cs.buffalo.edu with a Subject
line starting with the words OFFER COMMENT unless you are submiting material in
which case follow the WHAT TO DO instructions.

I hope this will let some of you get a chance to show off to the world the work
you have done.

This sucks. I like the methode with platforms, since I used something
like it in one of my levels.

Another way to do it is to put a block into the middle of the cross,
the player above doesn't have to run to get over it, he can just walk
like normal (anyway, I'm mostly running with shift ;). This is IMHO
better than moving floors, because if you play multiplayer games,
sometimes you'll get 'arrested' or at least moved to a place you don't
want to. (because another player is triggering the floor you are on!)

I'm sorry, but that would be a bit difficult.
I use gif pictures all over, so I'd basically have to convert it
to ASCII. Besides this document is a bit too large to be posted.
You'll just have to get WWW access ;)

It seems that some people on this list thinks that
hallways that pass over and under with no holes in the floor
is suddenly a great new idea... Well it isn't; even the
original id levels in DOOM ][ uses this effect.

You might check my page again. I've written a little something
about the effect...
All comments are very welcome

Subject: Weekly reminder: beginners' questions

This message is being posted at the request of the list caretaker:

The purpose of this list is to discuss *advanced* DOOM editing techniques.
In order to keep it that way, if you have a question but don't know whether
it's advanced or not, mail it in the first instance to:

Steve Benner : S.Benner@lancaster.ac.uk

Your question will either be answered or, if deemed suitable, forwarded to
the list. This is offered as a potential red-face saving and
list-annoyance abatement service. Feel free to send questions at any level
on any topic of WAD editing.

**If your questions are prefixed with the code WQ: (for 'WAD query') in the
subject field (e.g. Subject: WQ: Sprites), they will be processed quicker
because they will be spotted by an automatic mail sorter and brought to my
attention sooner than if I have to plough through my mail-box!**

This reminder will be posted here weekly, with the same subject title.

SEND QUERIES ABOUT SUBSCRIPTION TO:-
doom-editing-owner@ngv.unit.no **NOT** to me. Thank you.

I'll download the level and see it "for real". I suppose raising
the floor to the next highest floor won't do much if there isn't one, but
I don't remember actually trying :)

Will do.

Subject: Need 4 player DM testers?

You know,

There are four of us here where I work that deathmatch almost every
night. We have been for more than a year now. We play different
WADs all the time and always send LMPs and suggestions to the authors
of the WADs we enjoy. We are extreamly good at DOOM and deathmatch
and would love to playtest anything you are working on for you. I
create levels that I know are good for four player DM because I can
have them playtested as they are being developed. If you would like
the same opportunity, mail me your works in progress and we'll bash
around in them for a couple of hours and let you know what we think.
I know we aren't the ultimate judges or anything but it really is
nice to have an objective opinion *before* you release your hard work
to the world.

We figure we're going to be playing all the time any damn way so, why
not help out the list at the same time.

Anyway, if you are interested send me the WAD and a brief discription
of anything in particular you want us to check out. Depending on the
demand we will try to get it back to you as soon as possible (a
couple of days at most).

If you have your own network of 486dx2s and Pentiums *and* 4 people
with no lives to beat your WAD up for you, then please disregard this
offer.

And if you think this is some sick pathetic cry for attention and
notoriety...well you just might be right.

Have a great day,

John

ps. My mail can handle anything. UUEncode it, mime it, it won't
matter.

Although we can't beat your everynight routine, 4 of us play weekly
usually on a friday or saturday night, and of course an occational
all day/all nigheter. Our ring of 4 pentium 90s works ok (hint hint)
anyway, if you do in fact find some good 4 player wads or have a compiled
list of them, i would like to see it. I'll send you over some of our
usual wads. The latest craze over here is to have a level that is as

:) here's mine.
