Is it just me or does the average subscriber to this list browse
through FTP.CDROM.COM and find a whole lot of "bad" levels? I
think we should have some exclusive FTP site for WADS that are
genuinely good, both architechturally and playably, so that new
stuff can be uploaded there and we can get the latest stuff
without having to wade chest high in a lake of sludge (very

poetic). What about it? this site should be moderated in the
incoming directory - ie, levels uploaded can be grabbed and
opinionated before being given a final place. It would be a great
relief to somone like me who wants maps a la Overkill and idmap01
as opposed to the "bung 'em together, slap all the textures
anywhere, and put a few weapons around the place" wads that the
authors praise like mad and you waste the time downloading them.
Am I alone in this frustration? Just so I'm no hypocrite, I have a
small amount of WEB space to demonstrate my work thus far. It is
going to be upgraded soon enough, but at the moment there are a
few wads of mine there for you to check out.

Good Idea. Would you be willing to take on the task. We have gigs
and gigs of file space here but a slow link and none of the sysadmin
are interested in donating anything to DOOM. The only way ideas
like yours work is if someone donates the space. I agree that it
would be extreamly cool to have a place were only decent wads were
archived. Remember the old wad rating forms and the dm wad ratings?
We could start that back up and, only ones with a score of 7 or higher
would be allowed on (or something like that). I would be very
willing to help in the filtering process but, I can't donate the
site. Anyone else?

Hi all,
I have a bit of a problem here, which I have never heard described
here before. I have this level I am designing (NO! YES:) and whenever
I run it in the two easy levels, I have no problems. BUT, when I run
it in level 3 or four, a repeat switch that lowers a platform suddenly
stops working (it makes the sound, but the light stays out, and the
platform stays up), and doesn't start working until I return from a
certain other room by teleport. Also, a door that is supposed to open
and then close, starts only opening, and then making the close/open
noise that it might make if you were standing underneath it.
I have tried removing all the monsters (in thirds) from the room, so
that doesn't seem to be the trouble. I have tried renumbering the tags
involved. I have tried making sure that no monsters are standing too
close to the platform (the door is completely clear). I have tried
building the nodes with BSP12x.
I am now without clue (TM). Does anyone have any idea? I'll galdly
send it to anyone who is interested (it is a neat level, I think; you
might enjoy it).

I just thought of another idea. Why not just start a list of
"decent" wads on a web site somewhere and just link it to
ftp.cdrom.com. That way you wouldn't have to duplicate the data and
the end result would be the same.

You could try running it through DMapEdit's error checkers. If it doesn't
pick up on any errors, I don't know what's causing it. If it does,
though.. How big is the map?

I agree completely, but how would the good wads be determined. I would say
that they should be picked by vote. Someone who finds, or makes an
allegedly awesome dm level can email someone with a nomination, then that
someone would take votes for a specified period of time, and then tally the
votes to see if the nominated wad makes the cut. Then that wad is, or isn't
added to the ftp directory. Call it the "Wad hall of fame". I am working
on a way to take votes through a form on my web page, so let me know if this
would help.
I would be happy to put the wads on my web page for download too.

Instead of a whole new ftp site why not just make a text file or web
page with a list or reviews of all the good ones?
Here are some that i know of right now:

http://doomgate.cs.buffalo.edu/~williams/ - "best" wad page

I would like to have the best of the best in my web space. I could provide
links to the top ten or so, maybe more depending on their size. Currently,
I have only a few megs, but we are talking about the elite few dm wads,
which are small anyway (usually). Unfortunately, I have no publically
accessible FTP space.

http://doomgate.cs.buffalo.edu/~williams/ does this _exactly_ (well,
almost...), perhaps we should just tell everyone about it?

I know what you mean.. It's sad, but I hardly ever expect high
quality from wad authors outside of id (with a couple minor exceptions).
After all, its so easy to jump in to DEU (once you have it figured out), put
together some great wall layout, then "forget" to align (let alone choose
good) textures, mark exits, or balance properly (item wise). That's one of
the reasons I make sure I always create new textures for my levels,
otherwise the average user won't have any reason to choose mine over any
other. It'd be nice to have a WAD area on an ftp site where only WADs
featuring a favorable from some of us on the mailing list could be placed
(then you'd know you'd be getting something good).

uhmm. *waves his hands in the air to atract attention* hello? i'm the
ftp admin at ftp.cdrom.com and i can't possibly _test_ all the wads
uploaded, but if you want to start such a site, you're welcome to do so
and i can give you some tips if you ask for them (not do any work onthe
site though ;)
basically my suggestion is to download the new releases in the
newstuff dir at ftp.cdrom.com and test them yourself and keep only the
good ones. you could periodically write a list reviewing them and i could
put them in a dir at my site.

This idea rules. No need for another site, and a web page would be
easier to adminstrate. Cool, John!

Good idea too.. I'd prefer the voters be from this mailing list,
personally. Somehow I wouldn't be surprised to find such before mentioned
WAD pilferers (hehe) getting a couple votes going for themselves outside,
well, legimate authority. Also, a better form of WAD description should be
constructed. Sure, there's no limit to the current one, but just a laundry
list of "New graphics: Sounds: Levels:" etc., doesn't cut it now there
there's tons of each out there.
