So 1.9 does a CRC check or somethin' on the EXE files before it starts
up? That must be different than 1.7, where a guy I was playing changed
all the player sprites into Arachnotron sprites (using DeHackEd, not by
modifying doom2.wad), and it worked fine. (The advantage of this is
obvious: the opponent can no longer hide very easily, because his "legs"
are visible even THROUGH a lot of thin "walls".)

I've also seen the player objects changed to have their "bright" bit set,
so that they're seeable everywhere ..

1.9 checks for this kinda stuff?

To potential hackers of the chat key: search the executable for the
scancode for the t key, both press and release. This will (hopefully)
get considerably less hits than an ASCII 't' which won't be there anyway,
seeing as how Doom hooks the keyboard interrupt. Still...good luck! May
your copy of Turbo Debugger be kind to you this day.

Okay, guys, this is doom-editing@nvg.unit.no, not
mouse-vs-keyboard@nvg.unit.no. I think we've
discussed this enough, and since it has nothing to
do with doom-editing, why don't you take it to
a.g.d.

I REALLY ENJOYED most of the levels DOOM came with. Buuttt... it seemed
like they were pointles, I mean they were like something in a dream. How
many of you have been to a place like E1M1, what is the purpose of the
structure? In my levels I try to make a place that is semibeliveable.
That is one thing several Dark Forces have, a purpose. The people at
Lucas Arts really put a good game togeter, I love that you can have
passages above or below other passages. The objects are cool and I have
heard that there is a level editor. Well sorry to waste all this
bandwidth on what is a tring not to become flame bait.

Go play Dracos on houston dwango sometime - You'll see that cheat
work just fine. Without CF's.

Hi again, I kept getting mail bouncing back at me yesturday so I
will try again today, if this gets through could you reply to it
and I'll send you the ZIP file of my textures. I have DeuTex but
no manual, so I'd be grateful if you could either send me the
manual or actually make the patch wad ??

Thanks, Dario

I know this isn't really doom-editing, but a lot of epople have
been commenting on this. For mouse play in Doom, how do you set up your
keys? Are there any good training exercises/wads to try? I'm just a bit
confused.

I don't know comma damnit... I made my last set of mods maybe a week and
a half ago and sent them off to Raphael. I haven't gotten source from him
in some time. I have a few more things I would really like to put in
(like ripping out the current dialog box keyboard interface and replacing
it, so I can get string input fields to work), but I need the next update.
I heard a rumor he has in a minor car accident. He's in good condition and
all, but it was a setback of a couple days. I don't know any more details.

> If it is available, where can i find it?

The code is stable enough that I think he should release another beta, at
least just for looks. :) But we need to get the final word from him first.

This may be somewhat off topic.

I have no suggestion as to what controller
to use (I use a joystick what do I know), but -
I do think that it may be very interesting
for those editors who have never done so
to go shooting -out there in the real world.
Not bb guns or .22 but perhaps a forty caliber
Glock or a .45 Witness -something nice.
And of course a shotgun -I suggest a Benelli M3.
If you ask around it is very likly you will
be able to arrange to also fire some submachine
guns and real assault rifles(the kind that have
a full auto and three shot bust control).
This is the cardinal and only rule -never ever
not even for a moment even if the gun is unloaded
- -ever point it at anything or in any
direction that you would not want to shoot.
I also suggest that you at least try playing
some paintball.
What I would like to see in Doom weaponry
but sadly have not the knowledge to implement,
is a long distance rifle with a scope that
magnifies the target and a bullet calibre
that really does some dammage like a .50
calBMG. Of course a sniper weapon like this
would also have to be hard to master -to
make it realistic. And the difficulty would
have to increase with range -perhaps
there would be windage and elevation controls
on the scope or better yet a night vision scope
and you would actually get to sight it in.
Just some thoughts.

Yes, DEU interface isn't the most friendly of all, but DEU is good and
it's source is available. I'd like to convert it to OS/2 WPS (I need practice),
but I want a more stable and good version (and difficult, it is...), so, I want
DEU 5.3.
So, my best wishes for the health of Raphael, but *WE WANT DEU 5.3 as
soon as possible !!!!* ;-))))))
Raphael, are you hearing?

I would like to receive a *beta* version of it, so I can begin *trying*
to to the conversion as soon as possible (I'm knew to OS/2 programming, but
I'd like to do a native version)... If someone out there know how to program
for OS/2 and would like to participate in it, I'm here to hear... ;-)

Subject: Misplaced Topics

Just a quick note to ask anyone out there if they know of an
alternate mailing list that covers some of the current topics, such as mouse
vs. keyboard, EXE hacking, "having no life after Doom". I've seen all of
these topics here in the Doom Editing thread, but I'm curious if there is a
place for these more general topics.

If anyone can suggest some other mailing lists and how to
subscribe... I'll give you a megasphere for your troubles! :)

BTW... I've converted many heathen keyboard users to the true mouse sect!!

RUN = <LEFT ARROW>
STRAFE = <RIGHT ARROW>
FORWARD = <UP ARROW>
BACK = <DOWN ARROW>
FIRE = LMB
OPEN = RMB
TURN = MOVE MOUSE

This works pretty good... the only tricky part is strafing, since you can
only strafe so far without picking up your mouse and slamming it back over a
foot or so! :) A friend of mine actually uses an alternate KB scheme that I
suggested, but never converted to myself:

STRAFE L. = <LEFT ARROW>
STRAFE R. = <RIGHT ARROW>
FORWARD = <UP ARROW>
BACK = <DOWN ARROW>
FIRE = LMB
OPEN = RMB
TURN = MOVE MOUSE

Hmmmm... but how does the poor shmuck run, you ask? Well... this involves a
very low tech solution... he actually jams a paper clip into his KB to force
the run key permanently on (I think he actually has some letter assigned to
'RUN') After laughing at him for a few minutes, most people get more serious
as he literally runs a perfect circle around a target while keeping his
sights lined up precisely on the target and shooting! TRY THIS WITH A
KEYBOARD!!!! I can do this with the first setup... but like I said... I have
to keep picking up the damn mouse every few seconds, which causes a fatal
pause in my "Dance O' Death Circle". ;)

Any help on the alternate mailing lists would be apreciated!

Dave

I'll be happy to answer extensively in the doom newsgroups. For training,
try the H2HMud wads. :)
