Subject: Swimpool and other FX: Need info

I'm writing a WWW page about WAD special effects.
Currently I've covered the subjects:

The Swimpool Effect
The Invisible Stairs
The Invisible Raising Stairs
The invisible Lift

And I've started a part about transparent doors, that I expect
to finish soon. I need to find out who posted the WAD:

Swimpool.wad

to this list a long time ago. I'd also like to find out who came up
with these special effects in the first place so I can give them
the credit they deserve.

If you know of other special effects that you think I should throw in,
I'd like to hear about them.

Oh and the page is at:

http://www.daimi.aau.dk/~hykkelbj/doom/special/

but it's not finished yet. I still need to cover a few more things!

With kind regards,
Jens Hykkelbjerg

This note is concerning the request on who posted
swimpool.wad. I know the question was 'Who posted the
swimpool.wad?'. Although I'm almost certain that the idea of the
swimpool effect was first regarded by a Mathew J Ledding-Hill
in his test wad called submerge.wad. The following is a
note that he posted in july 94.

ave, bellatores!

It seems a few people were interested in seeing my submerging 'trick'
so I've mailed the PWAD in a separate file (SUBMERGE.WAD). The effect is
not much to get excited about; all I have done is created a sector of
nukage and placed within another at a height less than the first. By
ommitting the 'necessary' lower textures the result is what appears to be
a continuous floor of green when viewed from a distance - closer
inspection reveals a slight difference in pattern.
Anyway, I whipped out a wad with DEU showing the effect There's two
troopers slogging around in the nukage at different levels to show the
effect as viewed from a distance. Use iddqd or blast them with the
shotgun and then go for a walk for yourself in the stuff (the -2%-5% type
has not been set).
Most of the nukage is set at height 0. 'Steps' lead down into a sector
of height of -32 and this shows off the submerging/emerging effect. Any
setting deeper than that results in HOM. The surrounding area of nukage is
necessary; I think the width of the surrounding area must be twice the depth
of the lowest level (otherwise HOM). Moving quickly through the lower
sector causes the nukage to 'jump' somewhat (splashes perhaps).
Darkenning the area seems to cover up that cosmetic problem.
One major problem : dead bodies rest on top of submerged sectors.
Anyway, have a look; I don't know if anyone thinks this could be put to
use but I found it an interesting execercise in the omission of textures.

This whole idea could do with a little tweaking; as I mentioned before
it was discovered by accident and is not on a par with the great
transparent door epic.

BTW, I've never mailed a binary before so I deserve a flame if it
doesn't work.

Sure.

I would. But what would actually be on it? Would it just be a .WAD
and editor collection? Or would it have actual info on editting.
I've never seen any.

Well, it wouldn't take up that much space, if that's what you're

It's not that important anyways.

Cool. I hope NWT 2.00 comes out soon!

Hello...

I visited your homepage, and needless to say, I was impressed. Its
nice having a clean and concise explanation of some of the techniques
used.

One bug report... my browser found special.zip, but not swimpool.zip
(It came back with a this file doesn't exist error message from your
server).

Another something you might want to add: (its not as nice as some of
the other topics you have, but I mad a wad that uses a "sky door".
of sorts. it looks pretty cool, since the sky just kinda opens up to
a room. You might check it out if you wish:
ftp.cdrom.com /pub/doom2/wads/deathmatch/sky1.wad
or something like that. Its not wholly a deathmatch wad, as it works
on single decently too, but that's where they chose to put it.

Anyway... nedless to say, I'm impressed.

If you're gonna flame, at least bring a lighter.
Don't quote binaries that have already been posted.

I am the one that posted the SWIMPOOL.WAD. I think it would be
better to call this effect the "deep water" effect.

I had started on such a special effects document myself months ago,
but never made time to finish it. I'll mail it to you (once I get it from
home) so you can take what you want out of it. Of course you will need an
ASCII art to GIF converter ...

Check out my web page, especially the collection of links (see below for
URL) there are some good resources listed there for writing WWW pages.

I would use your site.

Thanks for posting the entire file again, I didn't get a close enough
look at it the first time it FLOODED MY ACCOUNT. Just thought I'd say
"Thanks".

(Can you tell I'm not terribly thrilled?)
