I hear you, I got into an online discussion with some guys from the UK that
claim to be the gods of doom, these guys were so pompous, and they were
giving terrible deathmatch advice on their web pages. Things like "the
mouse is always superior to the keyboard" and junk like that. We exchanged
many messages. I would love to trounce those guys. I play with the
keyboard only! Anyway, I know what you mean.

I'm not sure what you mean about the teammates here, we don't play team doom
either, it's yoo difficult. We just kill anything that flinches!
As far as levels go, check out the igor series, level 6 is especially good.
My levels are called pot.zip for "Pot-o-boilin' frags", and shogun.zip.
There's another one that I uploaded called jump.wad, but someone already had
that name, so I think it got nuked, I plan to re-upload it as jump2dth for
"jump to your death". I know, corny, but who cares, it's doom!

I like it! Do you keep track of who wins in sex? For that matter, do you
keep score? He he ;)

Could this be the first video game ever to actually become a REGULAR,
full time sport/hobby? I mean, the term "video games" generally refers
to the whole electronic gaming world... but DOOM is different. The game
has been out for over a year, and granted, its spunk and glee has worn
out a bit, but there are MANY people still actively playing deathmatch games.
Any input?

Maybe it is a nice idea to edit the marines sprites to make the
living players all the same color (much more fun if you can't tell
friend from foe until you get shot), but leave the dead ones their
own color, so you can tell who has been killed.

Ross, who exactly were you talking to? I'm the least pompous
person in the UK, but I'd love to find these loud mouths, then
proceed to wipe the marble with their guts :) They had this
competition held by a magazine called "PC Zone" and the bloke who
won has the biggest head you can imagine. He also happens to be
pretty much of a nothing outside computing, so the less said about
him the better (I won't name names, but he's called John Ripley).
As for the mouse thing, I used to be an avid Keyboard King, but
was woooed to the mouse by the fact that my brother always managed
to pick me in the distance with the shotgun, and he managed to
flick around and take me out in the back while I was still
turning! very annoying. So I converted to 'mousedom' and kicked
John Ripley's ugly butt >:)

I agree that four player co-op is a sham. OK, so it was my
mistake, but I only had 5% health and 1 rocket left, so what so
you think I did at the beginning of E2M4 of 4P co-op? that's
right, a triple frag the moment the action started! After numerous
insults and temper flares, It degenerated to bloody massacre, with
more telefrags than anyone could count. Great laugh.
And a bit of bait for y'all, this 'ere REALLY IS a Doom, God, all
others can claim it; I demonstrate it regularly.

life span of the game will extend for a while yet, possibly even
when Quake is released, as today's computers may not run Quake as
smoothly.
I bought an OTT PC a couple of months ago (I won't bore you, P90)
and thought "Great, now I'll run all these games really fast and
I'll never get off the computer", but the other games died out
because the extra speed wasn't that enhancing, but with Doom it
was different, even now I can see the game slowing on a DX4 100,
because it is SO smooth on my PC. It makes the game so
pleasurable, 37 FPS, so I tacked up an Egypt WAD level and scanned
in some beautiful textures. Lo and behold, it looks superb and
animates superbly. I think that is another reason why Doom has
lasted this long, hands up how many of you would still be paying
those old original levels! not me.

Yeah, I think you're right. Actually, as a 44-year-old white collar
professional and grandfather (professional grandfather?), it bothers me how
much I think about DOOM. A significant percentage of the time I'm not
playing DeathMatches, I'm thinking about playing DeathMatches, e.g., where
to find my next match, what I did wrong in my last match, how to play better
against a particular opponent, specific tactics for specific levels and
WADs, memories of esp. sweet matches and kills, how to get up the guts to
play John Romero, etc. I also spend some time watching other people play
DeathMatches, usually others in my family/extended family (altho not as much
fun as playing, the wife can't count it as time actually spent playing, plus
she has to give me points for sharing and taking turns, plus you can pick up
great tips about playing the particular levels being played and the people
doing the playing). If I initiate a conversation, my first choice for a
subject is DOOM....others have noticed this. If the conversation I am in is
*not* about DOOM, then there's a good chance that part of my mind *is*
thinking about DOOM.
The vast majority of my "DOOM time" nowadays, whether playing, talking, or
thinking, is devoted to DeathMatch. Sure, I have a few WADs a haven't played
thru, and I haven't finished Aliens-TC, but now when I play a WAD, my
mindset is on getting experience for DeathMatch, honing my mousing
techniques, etc. I'm playing DOOM II thru again on UV (again), with the
goal of getting 100/100/100% on every level, but to be honest, my main
motivation is to learn every nook, cranny, and inch of all 32 levels, so as
to have no disadvantage during a DeathMatch, since DOOM II is where I play
the majority of my matches.
What is it about DeathMatch? It totally seizes me!!! I keep telling myself
that I'm gonna read that book or whatever, but when someone calls for a
match, I throw everything else to the wind and go bonkers. Last night, a
match with a friend fell thru at 1915, but someone I have never met called
at 1925 for a match, and we played until about 2115 (he kicked my butt,
BTW). I finally had to quit, since my wife had made a comment earlier about
looking forward to spending a quiet evening with me (hey, it *was*
quiet....I had my headphones on!), and she was sitting there looking at me.
Only then did it dawn on me that I might want to eat supper. I was sitting
there with a full bladder, an empty stomach, and a system starved for
nicotine, and I was in heaven!
DOOM/DM has affected my sleeping habits and patterns. Altho I have always
been a night owl, now that I am in my mid-forties, my system would really
like to have 8 hours of sleep a night. But I find myself up till 0300 or
later most nights, either playing DOOM or catching up on things that I
didn't do earlier because I was playing DOOM. This really wreaks havoc with
a guy who has to get up every morning and make at least a token appearance
at the office (I am a PC systems programmer by trade). So I find that I
feel tired most of the time. I'd probably feel better if I got some
exercise and lost some weight, but who wants to do that when they could be
playing a DM (at least I'm honest!). But I rarely "feel sleepy" at night
(just at work <g>), since I am in a state of almost constant excitement
either about the last DM I played or the next one I will play. After I
finish a DM, it takes me quite a while to "come down", whether I won or lost
(losing matches eats up more of my time, because I spend so much time
combing over them in detail trying to pick out what I did wrong and how to
improve).
John Romero told me recently that I was a "total DOOMaholic", and he's
right. He went on to say that that was "totally cool". Is it? I'm 44 now,
and I still listen to 50s and 60s oldies in my car. I have often wondered
whether I will still be doing that when I'm 70, or more appropriately, "when
I'm 64" (if you don't get it, you just don't get it). Will I also still be
in the obsessive/possessive clutch of DOOM or QUAKE (or whatever is the top
game of that time) when I'm 64? It sounds ridiculous, but I spent 1994 in
that condition, and in 1995 my condition is worse, not better. What will
make it end? Oh well, at least then I'll be retired, so I'll have more time
to play DOOM......
I don't know the answers to my questions or my dilemma. All I know is that
when I think about these issues, it makes my head hurt and me feel bad.
When I play DeathMatch, it makes my head hurt and me feel good. Obviously,
I have too much idle time on my hands which is causing all this
introspection, so the solution is: I WILL PLAY MORE DEATHMATCH!!!!!!!

Sorry, mate, gotta disagree with you a bit there. Every once in a while, I
go back to original DOOM and play the first (shareware) episode for a while.
There's just *something* about E1....the other two episodes are not even
remotely in the same class....either id was rushing to get the registered
version out, or they had someone else do E2 and E3. To me E1 *is* DOOM, and
altho I like DOOM II a lot, it's not the same. Kinda like ST:TOS vs.
ST:TNG, I guess....hmmm, exactly like that, as a matter of fact. 'Nuff said!

Cool idea! But I fight differently depending on who I am up against. I
have learned my friends dodging patterns, although they have learned mine as
well, so it would still be fair, just not as much fun. There's a certain
amount of satisfaction when you know that Ben is gonna dodge left, so you
fire your rocket to your right, and BLAMMO! HAHAHAHA!

I have released WinTex 3.4 in two versions:
big one (600k) with VBRUN300 and all the utilities
small one (300k) with only the core of WinTex.
It has taken a long time, especially since the help file

but I think it's finished and usable now. :-)

He He, I feel your pain! You just about describe me to a T. Except I am
only 24. I stay up until 3 or 4, sometimes even 6 in the morning playing
DM. A friend of mine has a 4-man network, and we never have trouble finding
challenging opponents, so we do this 2 or 3 nights a week, we drink too much
beer, and spend too much money on pizza or chicken wings. I hold iD

Yeah. I agree. I actually jump sometimes when I hear that DB shotgun
shoot right behind me, and know it was aimed at me. I hated Descent cause
of that: the controls were so overwhelming for me that I couldn't do much
with it. Quake must be equally simple.

I agree here too. The add on WADs are what made Doom so much fun.
I have a P60, and it is damn fast. The only time I ever saw slowdown was
in a PWAD with tons of enemies in a 2player game. The wad was huge, and
slowed doom to chunkiness. But, I have always had great speed other than
that. How bout uploading that Egypt level to cdrom.com? Or, whats the
filename if you already have. Sounds like fun.
