I use a Gravis Gamepad and I can really cut a rug. All the buttons are
right there, I can perform most of the keybord functions pretty damn
fast. A regular joystick just doesn't have the buttons and a mouse is
only good for aiming (I only have a 2 button mouse). The keyboard is just to
spread out, the only game I use it for is Dark Forces(ObnewbiDumbQuestion: has
anyone heard anything about a level editor? Personaly I don't think there will
be since the odds are Lucas Arts won't be quite as free with thier code as iD).
Once I got the Gravis I haven't gone back, give one a try and see.

Try redefining the buttons to have RIGHT move forward (and screw strafing
with the mouse; it sucks anyway.) Then as long as you hold down shift with
your index finger and have your little finger on < and ring finger on > you
can strafe well too. Stretch your little finger to change weapons, just
lean it down to open a door, or stretch your tumb if you want to move
backward. With the exception of occationally switching for berzerk, I can
move forward while running and strafing while changing weapons. Oh, and
pumping up the sensitivity all the way both in DOS and in DOOM is a must

My guess is that most (not _all_ mind you) players who tried the mouse and
didn't like it had one of the following things happen: they didn't like
strafign (you need to use keyboard in conjunction), the mouse was too slow
for turning (you need hgih sensitivity), or they didn't do as well as they
did with the keyboard (this is natural; give it a week and a half and you'll
be at least as good if not better.)

Oh, sorry... I think this post relates more to playing than editing. My
apologies.

Well, there are a few things you can do to the EXE, but only with display.
For example, you could set it up to permanently give you light amp. Or
so that all players are permanently bright. Or so that hitting F12 shows
you their view even in deathmatch. I don't know how to do the last one.
In fact, I don't know how to do any of those, but I've never tried dehacked.

And yes, iFrag consistancy checks EXEs, so if someone has the cheat, everyone
has the cheat. I'm almost certain Dwango doesn't do a CRC check.

Yeah, I use a Gamepad too, and it beats just about anything. Mice,
keyboards, you name it. Gamepad aside, tho, I don't see how anybody
could even manage to control their movements with a mouse. If your mouse
is like mine, it requires about four inches of movement to get across the
screen, it often runs into invisible little barriers, or decides your
horizontal movement was really vertical, and it's constantly running off
the mousepad.

Since when is -altdeath for beginners? I prefer having Beserk
respawn, it is one of the best weapons in IDMAP01.WAD, you can
waste someone hanging around for the DB shotgun - loadsa fun.

Could the slow WAD be INVSEIGE.WAD ? it is a GREAT idea, and works
well, but with the numbers of monsters it creates at the exit, any
net game will slow down, mainly becuase other net players have
slower CPUs. A couple of days ago we were on this WAD (co-op by
the way) with my P90, a DX4 and a DX2 and it slowed down to a
crawl, we found this was the DX2 slowing us, as with just the DX4
and mine, it was fast as ever.

I have almost finished Egypt wad, I still have to sort the
textures out, I have them ready to put in, but don't know how to
create new entries to make a graphics patch wad. Can you help?
Once it is done, I will offer it to TNT (probably as secret level
number two as there are bosses in it) and if it is not taken, it
will go to my home page:

http://www.linefeed.com/linefeed/alek/dario.html

As soon as I get these damn textures sorted.

Cheers,
Dario

PS. it is 300k before texutures are added, even can notice some
jerkiness on my PC in the arena, so will be horror for the 486 :)

You have it set up incorrectly. With ballistics maxed and sensitivity
maxed, I need about 1/2 to 1 inch of travel to do a 180.
With practice, these types of moves become natural and automatic,
requiring no thought whatsoever.

Bill

The Gravis is almost as bad as the keyboard. Hundreds of dead
deathmatchers agree, switch to mouse/keyboard if you value
winning.

Many people are turned off by the mouse, because they don't have
it set up right. You want to max out the sensitivity in Doom,
AND set senstitivity and ballistics to max when you LOAD the
mouse driver. Different mice have different names for this.
Some use ballistics, others call it acceleration, etc.

Toy with the settings enough and soon you will be spending
more time on your opponent's six.

This is in response to the latest disagreement - just because we
all have our preferred control methods doesn't mean we have to
go round saying "my method rules" because it probably doesn't. I
know someone who uses a trackball, and is VERY good at Doom, I
use a mouse (MS ver 2.2) and it is so sensitive that you can
turn 360 with but a flick of the wrist, which means you can

strafe easily using the right button. I'm not saying this is best
but it is possible with the right mouse setup. As for the gamepad,
is this the type that has that + shaped thing on it? if so, is it
as accurate as the mouse for mid-to-long distance shooting?

After saying all this I should add that we're not beginners at
Doom, I was playing with the keyboard for a year before making the
switch, no people who used to walk over me with the mouse have no
chance. Maybe it's best for everyone to start on the keyboard, to
learn the rection times and compensate for character movements,
then switch to the mouse. It worked for me and some others here.
But which ever control suits you, so be it.

If only the INTERNET Doom wasn't so slow, I wish I could play some
gamepad people to see if they really ARE that good...:)

I have put a BETA of STOCKADE.WAD that will be submitted to TNT
for the second secret level. It is far from finished but shows you
what it will be like. I have also included a LUMP (D2 ver 1.9)
showing me in action. Tell me if I'm shite or not..:)
