Well, the fact that GIF is so entrenched and common is one point for it.
Plus the fact that GIF's are smaller than BMPs. Take a copy of vpic
(grat program) and convert a gif to a bmp. Now look at the size
difference. Gif uses 256 colors. Now, I know this is limited but it
means that most any system out there can view it. I have noticed that
the color quantizing on some of the other formats to fit 256 color
limit is lacking. To tell you the truth, I'll wait for the Compuserve
police to come and beat me up for converting my targas to GIFs when I
raytrace.
