Well, since it relates directly to Doom, I'd say it's mailing
list-worthy. You're right--it's not standard double-buffering. Id used
a tweaked VGA mdoe, sometimes known as unchained mode or mode X, to give
themselves four buffers--all in video memory. Mode X involves setting
standard 320x200x256 mode 13h, then modifying the registers of the VGA
card. You can change the resolution (from 160xsomething to 360x480!) and
lots of other neat stuff. Catch is, it's harder to write to video RAM.
But, with a good algorithm (like ID has =) ) it goes pretty damned fast.
How'd I find this out? Try and run Doom or Doom ][ in an OS/2
window--you'll notice that, instead of one normal-sized image of the
title screen, you get eight or so smaller ones. This is how things
running in Mode X tend to look. Same thing happens if you try and get
screen shots of a Mode X screen.

In my humble opinion, I have created a pretty fun Deathmatch WAD
using DCK2.0 and DEU2C.
DCK2.0 is the EASIEST wad editor I have ever seen. The texture alignment
features are a dream. The linedef codes are the most complete, and the
whole sector "theme" painting is the funkiest feature I have seen in a while.
(You can paint whole sectors with the same textures and styles all in one
swoop.)
:-) Very neat.
The wad I created to prove the above comment is called GOTOHELL,
and I uploaded it to ftp.cdrom.com after a lot of testing this week.
Try it. Tell me if you like it. And, check out DCK2.0, as it's FREEWARE.
(NO, I am NOT the author...)
Ciao.

I must agree.. I have thus far been using DEU for Doom (and hacked
variants for Doom ][ since I can't wait!) and decided to try out DCK20..
It really is a nice little tool for doing wads.. Nice features and easy
to use.. I cut my time spent on wad design due to DCK .. It does take
getting used to (after spending days and days using the DEU interface..)
but it was worth it.. I still use DEU every now and then for extra
tweaking of my wads however..

Just wanted to jump on Wayne Radford's bandwagon here and throw my
support for editor of the year in the corner of Doom Construction Kit
V2.0
The ease of use and overabundance of features that Ben Morris (the
author) has dropped into this update is great. Most of the other
editors I've used had some major drawback (usually in the interface or
node building departments) but this baby shines on all fronts.
Do yourself a favor and hook the dile DCK20.ZIP off of one of the
sites. I think I found it on doomgate.cs.buffalo.edu. Try it out and
post your comments on the list. I'd really like to see this effort get
it's just recognition.

Well, I don't want this to start sounding like a testimonial for the Hair
Club for Men, but I must agree, DCK 2.0 is pretty damned nice. As an
avid command-liner, I feel sort of foolish saying this, but it makes
.WAD-building less technical. I did have to tweak it quite a bit to get
it to work with QEMM's @*##*& DPMI server, but after that, it was most cool.

yeah, DCK is just great except for the fact that its memory management sucks
(it locks up my P90 system every few minutes)..I must say the editor itself
is pretty nice though..

i find DoomEd to be the easiest to build wads in, but I'm rather reluctant
to use it due to the fact that it can sometimes destroy your .Wad...
What's the latest version of it? I tried e-mailing it's creator, but I
got no reply.
