I agree with your opinion to a certain extent, the textures
don't seem to give the same effect of photorealism that Doom
does, but having said that, when I first saw Doom I had
reservations about the walls and how surreal they were.

In reply to several recent critiques of heretic's textures I'd like to
add my two cents. I really enjoyed the new textures in the shareware
version and expect that the registered version will have many more.

Another post asked about a version of Dmgraph for Doom2 and the response
was essentially empty of useful information. There are two excellent
tools available for editing textures for either doom 1 or doom 2
(heretic support may also be there) they are called:
deutex31.zip and nwt102.zip and they are available from ftp.cdrom.com.

I recommend deutex despite it's command line (or batch file) interface.
Once you read through the docs and experiment with it for a while you
can get it to do just about anything you'd like in the way of adding
graphics or sound to doom. Nwt (New Wad Tools) is also good and has
a graphical interface. I use it mainly for viewing textures and visually
building textures from basic wall patches.

I have no association with the authors of either of these utilities
other than as a satisfied customer.

.. I just _have_ to say that the textures sucked (yes, that's the best
description I can come up with -- ok, ok, they were too bright and big,
cartoony, Mickey-Mouse).. They took away from the feel of the game (I
dodn't feel like I am really in the game when I play [unlike Doom])..
Same goes for the sprites.. In fact, I deleted it, 'cause it was -*gasp*-...
dull!

Yeah, I know what you mean, even tho I can't exactly put it into words.
It's almost like things are "fuzzy"....I don't know. When I really noticed
it, tho, is when I started playing DeathMatch. The human figures seem
blurry and hunched over, and noticeably smaller than in DOOM. I found it a
*lot* harder to pick my opponent up, regardless of his color. But it sure
was enjoyable to fly out of nowhere and blast him to bits from above!!!
Man, I hoarded those wings just for that opportunity!!


It was also great to turn him into a chicken and then blast him to bits. I
did this to my opponents several times, but it only happened to me once, and
it was then that I discovered that you can still use your magic items even
tho you are a chicken, 'cause I threw one of my eggs at him (actually,
"her", my daughter) and turned her into a chicken, too!!! We decided at
that point to have a "pecker to the death" contest (what a pun!), and
started running at each other to see who could inflict the most damage with
that deadly beak <g>. It was then that I made my next discovery -- the
chicken spell is not permanent!!! As I was turning for another pass, I
turned back into a human. Imagine my opponent's surprise when she turned
expecting to face a beak, and got a "dragon claw sandwich" right in the
chops instead!!!

But I digress....

Well, I feel the opposite from the far above. I think the textures in
Heretic are much better than in doom. The graphics are mostly better,
thats why a company dedicated mainly to doing graphics did the graphics!
The wall textures in particular were well thought out and placed (though
I can't belive they forgot to align most of them) and often do a pretty
descent job of camoflage(sp?). Heretic gets a big thumbs up from me as
what I see as *my* (not exactly everyones, but my) ideal edditting
environ.

Maybe you have yours in low-res mode?
