I tried playing DOOM II with a friend and he has version 1.7 and I have
1.666. Had error: Can't play with different versions.

To John Romero: Will there be a patch for 1.666?

I read a few days ago in alt.games.doom that some one had posted a wad
map program that creates a postscript map of all levels in a wad. However
it was posted to alt.binaries.doom which I can't get hold of and the file
has failed to appear on any doom sites. has anybody got it ???? If so can I
have it ????

Many thanks

Me too.

I am very interested in a program that can do this. If anybody has it or
knows where it can be found could you please help out Ben and I here. We
know we're not worthy (..right Ben?..) but we want it anyway.

There is a program called dm2ps v1.3 as far as i remember the version
number, which is able to convert .WAD levels into A4 postscript pages.
This works fine and looks very nice. You can get it via FTP at infant or on
every DooM Site. Normally it is in the misc stuff directory.

Shit, I did that too, but I packed it into a pwad. I merged the textures
from DOOM I and DOOM II and included all the patches from DOOM I. When I
invoked DOOM II with the resulting pwad it wedged.

Can anyone confirm whether all of the Doom ][ copies in stores, from
GT, etc. are 1.7? This appears to be a good way to separate pirates from
non-pirates, if it is indeed the case.

Interesting. Your doom2.wad is larger than mine. And I don't even
HAVE a readme.exe! I have a readme.txt. Also, your doom2.exe is
a different size. Is there some way we could generate a list of
diffs between the two .wad's, so I could list all the differences?
(I can guess what some of them are...)

Where did you get this BTW? (Guess you already answered "when"... :-) )

I can confirm that this is not the case. I have a legal copy of Doom II,
purchased from Software Etc., and it's 1.666, with no readme.exe, etc.
(I made sure to buy a legal copy before posting the secrets list, so
I wouldn't be caught by something like this... :-) )

The pirated version has an identical doom2.wad file, but the .exe is
686921 bytes. The legal doom2.exe I have is 687001 bytes (but is
not the same as the registered 1.666 doom.exe binary).

Congratulations! You have purchased an extremely fine device that
would give you thousands of years of trouble-free service, except that
you undoubtably will destroy it via some typical bonehead consumer
maneuver. Which is why we ask you to PLEASE FOR GOD'S SAKE READ THIS
OWNER'S MANUAL CAREFULLY BEFORE YOU UNPACK THE DEVICE. YOU ALREADY
UNPACKED IT, DIDN'T YOU? YOU UNPACKED IT AND PLUGGED IT IN AND TURNED
IT ON AND FIDDLED WITH THE KNOBS, AND NOW YOUR CHILD, THE SAME CHILD
WHO ONCE SHOVED A POLISH SAUSAGE INTO YOUR VIDEOCASSETTE RECORDED AND
SET IT ON "FAST FORWARD", THIS CHILD ALSO IS FIDDLING WITH HE KNOBS,
RIGHT? AND YOU'RE JUST NOW STARTING TO READ THE INSTRUCTIONS,
RIGHT??? WE MIGHT AS WELL JUST BREAK THESE DEVICES RIGHT AT THE
FACTORY BEFORE WE SHIP THEM OUT, YOU KNOW THAT?

Nope, pretty sure mine says 1.666. Kinda pissed if they fixed the bugs and didn't
tell us, the hardened followers of Doom. Could at least update the 'finger'
file, eh? In case anyone is counting, mine was purchased last Thursday...
the 6th of October.

I have a REAL, PAID for copy of DOOM ][ and it is says 1.666 when I run it.
It's DOOM2.EXE file is 687001 bytes. Dated 08-29-94 7:56p The Pirated
DOOM2.EXE (which I have seen) has a DOOM2.EXE 686921 bytes big with an
earlier date stamp.. Both are compatable and both run as Doom 1.666 I
have NEVER seen 1.7

No such luck. My copy of DOOM ][ arrived from GT yesterday (S.O.B.s!)
and is version 1.666.

A comparison of the file sizes and dates between 1.666 and 1.7 gives
the following differences:

1.666:
DOOM2 EXE 687,001 08-29-94 7:56p
DOOM2 WAD 14,943,400 08-29-94 7:56p
1.7:
DOOM2 EXE 686,993 09-21-94 6:38p
DOOM2 WAD 14,612,688 09-21-94 6:38p

So it appears that not only did GT get me copy to me a week after
Electronics Botique had it, but I don't even have the newest version.

It should be out on the net now... I'll be releasing a new version soon that
will create a PWAD file instead of throwing the extra and changed information
into the IWAD file. I'm also going to make it extract the levels from DOOM 1
and save them into a PWAD file in the MAPxx format... that way you could play
DOOM 1 with DOOM 3... and finally we all can nuke our copies of both DOOM 1
and DOOM 2. DOOM 3 will be all anyone needs.... joyee!

The copy I recieved was from one of my distributors, American Hardware
and Software. GT Interactive sells to them... The thing is thought, that
apparently it shipped out last Thursday, we didn't get it on Friday,
Monday was Thanksgiving, so I recieved it on Tuesday, but I think the ship
date is rather important, being last Thursday...

I wish I had a copy of RTPatch kicking around so that I could generate
a list of differences, but alas... And FILECOMP won't work on files of
different sizes... :(
