Ancient link between humanity and the Sirius star
Since ancient times, Sirius, the Dog Star, has captured the attention of many cultures, placing special importance on its occult symbolism. What makes Sirius so special? Is it just because it is the brightest star in the night sky, or is there something more, an ancient secret that connects the Dog Star to the origin of humanity?
Sirius is a white star in the constellation Canis Major, and is therefore also known as the "Dog Star". It is the brightest star in the night sky. It has a mass equal to 2.4 times that of our Sun and is also much hotter: its temperature of 9,400 K makes it appear intensely white.
Its nocturnal glow has fascinated man since the dawn of time, in fact, Sirius has been venerated by practically all ancient civilizations.
But is it only its brightness that attracts humanity's attention, or is there something more?
Several artifacts from ancient civilizations reveal that Sirius was considered of great importance to astronomy, mythology and occultism. In the oldest book of the Vedas, Sirius was known as the “Cape Star”; in other Hindu writings, it is referred to as the abode of the Rain God, or Rain Star.
Even the ancient Egyptians paid particular attention to Sirius, identifying it with the soul of the goddess Isis, sister of Nephthys, Seth and Osiris, of whom she was also the wife and with whom she had Horus.
In reality, for the Egyptians Sirius was not only important, but it was the astronomical foundation of the entire religious system. His appearance in the sky was accompanied with feasts and celebrations.
Some researchers have proposed that the Great Pyramid was built in perfect alignment with the stars, particularly Sirius. One of the ventilation ducts of the "queen's chamber" would point precisely towards the Dog Star.
Interestingly, there was a time when Sirius was not visible in the sky of Egypt. This circumstance is caused by the phenomenon known as "precession of the equinoxes", a very slow movement of the Earth that causes a particular effect: it makes the stars swing back and forth like a pendulum. Twelve thousand years before Christ, observing the sky from the Giza plateau, Sirius was below the horizon line. It made its first appearance in the skies of Egypt around 10,500 BC.
According to the study https://arxiv.org/abs/1307.8397 the megalithic pillars of the Gobekli Tepe sanctuary also appear to be aligned with the point where the star Sirius rises. At the latitude of Gobekli Tepe, Sirius would have remained hidden under the horizon until 9300 BC, and then suddenly 'popped up' in the sky.
The Dogon Enigma
In Mali, West Africa, there is a population, the Dogon, known for their knowledge of the star Sirius which would be considered impossible without the use of a telescope.
They pass down a creation myth whose protagonist is a being coming from the star Po Tolo (Sirius B), venerated as the god Amma. The Dogon claim to be his descendants.
In 1947, after living with the Dagon for more than seventeen years, the French anthropologist Marcel Griaule reported a truly incredible story. The tribal elders revealed to Griaule one of their most closely guarded secrets, hidden even from most of the tribal community.
The leaders told how the Nommo, an amphibious, half-fish, half-human species, founded an ancient civilization on Earth. Despite their primitive culture, the Dagon elders say they have received profound knowledge of the solar system from one of the mysterious Nommo.
The elders are aware of the four moons of Jupiter, the rings of Saturn and are aware of the spiral shape of the Milky Way and know that it is the planets that move around the Sun and not vice versa.
But what most baffles ethnologists is the Dagon's knowledge of the orbits, dimensions and density of the stars in the Sirius system. The Dogon have carefully confirmed the existence of Sirius A, B and C, knowledge that modern science has only recently acquired.
Sirius C remained unknown until 1995, when astronomers noticed the gravitational influence it exerts on the movement of the entire system.
Yet, for hundreds of years, the primitive Dagons were not aware of the three stars, but they also knew some details. Where did this knowledge come from?
The mythological system of the Dogon is surprisingly similar to that of other great civilizations, such as the Sumerians, the Egyptians and the Babylonians, as it contemplates the archetypal myth of the creative intervention of the gods from above, who, through the intervention of "great masters” (such as Enki for the Sumerians, Horus for the Egyptians, Hermes Trismegistus for the Greeks, Quetzalcóatl for the Maya, etc…), have “given” civilization to man.
Occultism and Freemasonry
The association of Sirius with the divine, which considers the Dog Star as the home of origin of the "great masters", is a knowledge that has survived to this day, widespread especially in the world of occultism and freemasonry.
The mystery schools consider Sirius as "the Sun behind the Sun": just as the heat of the Sun keeps the physical world alive, so Sirius keeps the spiritual world alive. It is the "true light" that illuminates the spirit, just as the Sun illuminates the physical world, considered as an illusion.
Even some modern secret societies, such as Freemasonry, the Rosicrucians (who base their knowledge on the teachings of Hermes Trismegistus) have given the utmost importance to Sirius. An educated eye on their symbolism provides insight into the profound connection between Sirius and occult doctrines.
Therefore, simply stating that Sirius is important to the Hermetic orders is an understatement. The Dog Star is central to the teachings and symbolism of secret societies.
In Masonic lodges, Sirius is known as the “Brightening Star”: «it is the first and most sublime object that demands our attention in the lodges», writes the Masonic author William Hutchinson. It represents the omnipresence of the Creator and his omniscience.
Sirius is therefore a symbol of the "sacred", the source of divine power and the destination of divine individuals.
To reach perfection, the initiate must understand and internalize the dual nature of the world: good-evil, male-female, black and white, etc. through alchemical metamorphosis. This concept is symbolically represented by the union of Osiris and Isis (the male and female principle), to give life to Horus, the perfect man of Freemasonry.
In short
From the dawn of civilization to modern times, from the remote tribes of Africa to the great capitals of the modern world, Sirius was and still is seen as a giver of life and wisdom. Despite the distance in time and space, various cultures have attributed the same meaning to Sirius.
The question is: how is it possible that the meaning of Sirius harmonises in such a transversal way between the various human cultures? Is there a common original source for these Sirius myths? Is there a secret link between human evolution and the Dog Star? The solution to this mystery could represent the answer to one of the most important questions of human beings: where do we come from?
