Subject: Proper welding for valves
Find a weld shop that can do Tig welding of stainless. Sanitary weld is a
process of back flowing the argon on the back side of the weld. This leaves
the surface smooth and free off a by- produce called sugar. The key
element is to ask can you do backflow welds.
What I do here for brewers is sanitary Tig weld in full couplers. I make a
foil pocket to tape on the inside with a probe from an argon bottle and flow
a small amount of gas as I weld the outside. This leaves the inside smooth
as glass.
A weld with out the gas will leave the surface rough and hard to clean but
can still be able to use. The process pulls the iron out of the stainless
that's where the term sugar comes from and the area will need to have a
pacification none to keep from rusting. There are companies that make a
product for this but a good scrubbing with something like Barkeepers and a
stainless steel wire brush will work.
Ask to see a shop's finished work they will be happy to show it. Ask
question's before the work is done. Portland that's a little far to come
here but I would be happy to do it.

A sanitary weld is not necessary for the kettle and hlt. What is needed is
a threaded nipple - at least on the end which the ball valve will be
screwed. A 1/2" stainless nipple is a good choice. Depending on the skill
of the welder the nipple can either be positioned flush with the ID of the
tank or it can protrude a bit. Gas tungsten arc welding is required. While
welding from the ID side is the best situation, it can also be welded from
the OD side, but expect to grind off the "sugar" that will form on the
opposite side. Depending on the thickness of the wall not much heat is
needed. Too much heat, with an inexperienced welder, will result in a big
hole.
