C A R O L I N A No 131, Friday, September 23, 1994.
EVENTS OF PAST TWO WEEKS (7 - 21 SEPTEMBER)
Defense Minister Forced Out
Defense Minister Antonin Baudys was removed from his post Wednesday
by President Vaclav Havel. The action followed demands for Baudys's
removal by Prime Minister Vaclav Klaus and by Baudys's own party - the
Christian Democratic Union-Czechoslovak People's Party (CDU-CPP).
The new defense minister will be Vilem Holan. (See following story.)
The CDU-CPP leadership called for Baudys's replacement after
a meeting on Monday. "Baudys's actions in the ministerial post do not
correspond to requirements of CDU-CPP for the member of Government,"
said party Chairman Josef Lux.
In press coverage of the ouster, attention was drawn to several
flaps that developed during Baudys's tenure: a Bosnian peace initiative
Baudys launched without consulting other members of the government; the
accidental discharge of a gun by one of the soldiers accompanying him on
a flight to Sweden; and the case of a general caught stealing from
a department store who was allowed to retain his rank.
However, Mlada Fronta Dnes reported that the party also had reason
to seek Baudys's ouster because he was less than fully committed to
raising funds for the party.
President Appoints Vilem Holan New Minister of Defence
Vilem Holan, until now head of the Asia, Africa and Latin America
Departement at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, will become the new
Czech defense minister. Holan, an expert in health issues, has not
previously worked on issues connected to the army.
Holan has been a member of CDU-CPP since 1990. He is the father of
three children. He plays piano and works in the garden in his spare
time.
Government Approves 1995 Budget Proposal
The Czech government has proposed a 1995 state budget of about 480
billion Czech crowns. The proposal was approved Wednesday, and will be
presented to Parliament next week. The government anticipates a balanced
budget.
Poland Will Pay 57 Million Dollar Debt to Czech Republic
An agreement settling Polish debt to the Czech Republic was signed
by finance ministers Ivan Kocarnik, for the Czechs, and Gregorz Kolodko,
for the Poles, Saturday, September 10, in Nachod.
The debt dates from before 1989, when Poland owed the Czechoslovak
Socialist Republic 87 million dollars. The 57 million due to the Czech
Republic will be paid through the construction of recycling and
ecological plants in Czech Republic before 1996.
Bets on New Prague Mayor
Bookies from the Fortuna betting office find Prague Mayor Jan Koukal
(Civic Democratic Party) a hot favorite to retain his seat. A longer
shot is Michal Prokop, now deputy to the minister of culture and
a member of Civic Democratic Aliance. Former foreign minister Jiri
Dienstbier is slotted third. Municipal election campaigns start in
November.
CULTURE

SPORTS
Football - Czech Teams in European Cup
Slavia Praha entered the first round of UEFA by a scoreless tie with
AAIK Stockholm. The match was played in Sweden. The teams will travel to
Prague for a second meeting.
Viktoria Zizkov will have much more difficult position, because the
team lost in London against Chelsea 2:4, having dropped two gaols behind
by the fifth minute.
Seventh Round of Football League
The match of Sparta Praha against Liberec was awaited with great
interest. Sparta, reeling from inner turmoil including the firing of its
coach, could not withstand the pressure from home team Liberec and lost
1:2. Sparta fell to fifth place.
The standings are led by Slavia Praha, with 16 points, and by
Viktoria Zizkov. Slavia beat FK Jablonec 2:1 and Viktoria beat newcomer
Svarc Benesov 2:0. Team Boby Brno is in third, after beating Bohemians
Praha 3:1. In the Moravian derby, Sigma Olomouc and Banik Ostrava parted
with 1:1 tie. Viktoria Plzen and Ceske Budejovice finished with a tie as
well. Hradec Kralove is still in crisis, dropping to last place and
after it lost 0:2 in Zlin. Petra Drnovice has similar problems, having
lost in Cheb 1:2.
Hockey League Starts as Well
Slavia Prague and HC Vsetin are newcomers to the league. Both teams
are strong financially and in their rosters, and we can expect them to
stay longer than their predecessors. (Last year, newcomers Jindrichuv
Hradec and Hradec Kralove fell back to the lower leagues after only one
year.
The results of first two (out of 44) round of the basic part:
1th round
Jihlava - Kladno 5:3 Zlin - Plzen 6:2
