FROM LAST WEEK'S EVENTS (May 19-26, 1993)

Vaclav Havel after departure from Greece

Greece will support the Czech Republic in the process of
integration into European structures, summarized Czech President Vaclav
Havel his three-day visit to Greece. During his talks he met premier K.
Mitsotakis and president K. Karamanlis.
According to Havel, Greece realizes that it is in the continent's
interest that Central European countries should join democratical Europe
and its organisations as soon as possible.
On Monday Havel received international award Athinai which has been
awarded for merits in understanding between nations, for service to the
humanity and human dignity since 1980 by Onassis Foundation. The value
of the award is USD100 000.

Klaus's Civic Democratic Party (ODS) is in the lead

More than one third (35.1 percent) of the votes would come today
for ODS, 13.9 percent to social democrats, 9.5 percent to Civic
Democratic Alliance and Communist Party of Bohemia and Moravia. These
are the results of a poll carried out by Centre of Empiric Research
published this week.
As according to this poll, people are most satisfied with
government foreign policy, privatization and strengthening democracy.
Most of them are discontent with governmental activity in security,
environmental protection, agriculture, health service and education.

Prague spring after a quarter of a century

International conference Prague - Berlin - Paris 1968 held by
Heinrich Boll Foundation took place on May 21, 22 in Prague's Carolinum.
It is just a quarter of a century from student barricades in Paris,
manifestation of German radicals, and Prague spring follow by august
occupation. The presidium consisted of the organizer Milan Horacek,
legendary Daniel Cohn - Bendit, today's mayor of Frankfurt above Mohan,
widow after Rudi Dutschke Gretch, and Joschko Fischer, current
vice-premier of Hessen government. Attending were also Eduard
Goldstucker, Zdenek Mlynar, Ivan Dejmal, Darel Kosik, Bernard Poulet,
Zdenek Zboril, Petr Uhl,u Miroslav Tyl, Zdenek Jicinsky, Jiri Kanturek,
dr. Jiri Hajek.
In this year's nineth issue of Lettre Internationale connected with
the 1968 anniversary, Adam Michnik wrote in an article called
Noncomfortable Anniversary:
"What was Prague Spring? A movement for freedom or a communist intrique?
A reform whose aim was destruction, or a mascarade aiming at saving the
dictatorship? Who were the people from Prague Spring - organizers of
mutiny against totalitarian oppresion or dyed foxes changing their
coats?... From something which was the truth and the testimony of the
generation, there is now a subject to ridicule and communist lie. More
and more often now we can hear that it was just the time when communists
were fighting for power, and that from a point of view of national
interests these were only indifferent events because communists were the
same... Today often repeated opinion that communism was nothing else but
a Soviet agency unables us to understand ways towards communism, sources
of this ideology, and finally the mechanism of departure from
communism."
Michnik's understanding provoked and anticipated contributions of
most of the participants to the discussion. A.J.Liehm compared the 1968
year to 1948. Revivalistic movements, no matter the appearance, swept
through all Europe, and though they were defeated, their thoughts gave
rise to several generations. Professor Kosik described the 1968 year as
a heroic attempt endoubting old paradigms, and also explained his
thought that a modern man sinks in the bondage of a system he has
created, that people are reduced to consumers and producers. All
essentials have already happened, history finished with the year 1989.
Other participants also expressed their opinions on understanding
the then events in today's context. This was the first big opportunity
for significant representatives of 1968 from both former blocks to meet.

Thirty five percent people for military intervention in Bosna

In May poll of the Centre of Empiric Research, 35 percent of the
population of the Czech Republic agree with a military intervention in
Bosna and Hercegovina. Particulary young people, university graduates
and rightists rather than leftists spoke for the intervention.

FROM SLOVAKIA

Meciar's statement cannot put Czech-Slovak relation in doubt

An answer to the Czech note connected with Slovak Premier's
statement in German weekly Der Spiegel (we covered this last week) will
be delivered probably very soon. This comes from Czech press information
given by Slovak minister of Foreign Affaires Jozef Moravcik at
Tuesday's press conference in Bratislava.
"We are considering now how to reply to this note. But one thing is
sure - neither this or any other statement like this can put in doubt
our frank relationship to the Czech Republic and our interest in
creating another reliable partnership between our republics", he said.

Slovak premier after a visit to the US

Slovak premier Vladimir Meciar described his five-day non-official
visit to the USA as succesfull. At Saturday's press conference held
right after his departure he also said that the most important was his
talk with representatives of International Currency Fund about a credit
amounting at USD90,000,000 for the stabilization of Slovak currency.
According to V. Meciar, both sides agreed that former negotiations with
this institutions were effected by a lack of basic information about
Slovak economy. During his visit to the USA Meciar also presented his
proposal - "analogy of Marshall plan". "Everywhere where I presented
this, they took it as a very progressive and interesting new thing",
said V. Meciar in his regular ten-minute TV programme. He did not
present any details of his project.

Meciar and his party are losing favour

In the favour-ledder, Movement for Democratic Slovakia (HZDS) is
still in the lead with 15 percent but since January has lost another
nine percent. The second - Party of Democratical Left Wing (SDL) has
strengthened its position in the same period and has also 15 percent of
devotees. Nine percent of the votes went in January and April for Slovak
National Party (SNS) and number of people prefering Christian Democratic
Movement of Jan Carnogursky dropped from 8 to 6 percent. A group of
impartialists rose remarkably - 39 percent of the population do not
prefer any political subject.
The most trustworthy politician in Slovakia is President Michal
Kovac with 22 percent before Vladimir Meciar with 21 percents and Peter
Weiss with 18 percents.

Knazko's Alliance of Democrats got registered

Petitions with apr. 1100 signatures were turned in for registration
to the Ministery of the Interior of the Slovak Republic by a member of
the National Council of the Slovak Republic Milan Knazko who had left
the governing Movement for Democratic Slovakia some time ago. The new
political party will, according to him, be inspired by liberal thoughts.
In the political spectrum they should be positioned in the right centre.
