THE EVENTS OF THE LAST WEEK (from May 13-20)


The Denouncement of the Agreement

Jozsef Antal, the Hungarian Prime minister, sent to Marian Calfa,
the Prime Minister of CSFR, the denouncement of the interntaional
agreement on Gabcikovo-Nagymarosz construction from 1977. Statement of
40 pages is a part of denouncement. Czech-Slovakian side is accused that
didn't take in the consideration law and possible ecological
consequences and eliminated the cooperation with EC. Hungaria is willing
to cooperate on the problems appearing after the denouncement but
ecological point of view has to be included.
According to Marian Calfa is the decision of the Hungarian
government unacceptable and it is contraversial to international law.
Jan Carnogursky, the Chairman of Slovakian government, views other
negotiations as discusting.


Major and Mandela to Prague

The British Prime Minister John Major will visit Czechoslovakia
from May 26-28. Major will visit Poland and Hungaria on his way around
the Middle Europe too. Major should confirm the support that Great
Britan will provide to the new democrasies in Eastern Europe and their
possible membershipin the EC.
Nelson Mandela, the chairman of the African National Congress, will
come to Prague too. He started his journey around European countries
last week. He is planning to visit Norway, Finland, Sweden, Switzerland
and Czechoslovakia.


The First Run Has started

The first run of voucher privatization was started on May 18. The
owners of coupons will give them to the businesses directly. The first
run will end on June 8.
The results of the first run should be evaulated till June 30. The
owner will be informed if his demand was satisfied and if he got the
shares of bussiness where he sent his coupons. If he failed to get the
shares, his coupons will proceed to next run of privatization. The
second run will take shorter period because less demanders will take
part in it.
Total offer is 300 billion Kcs of property in the first run of
privatization. The rate between shares nad coupons is 3: 100 and it is
same for all share companies. Each of owners of registrated voucher book
has 1000 coupons that he can divide to more businesses. Minimal amount
of investment is 100 coupons.


Petr Pithart in Belgium

Petr Pithart, the Prime Minister of the Czech government, visited
Belgium. He was invited by Luc van den Brand, the Executive President of
Flandern. The declaration aboutrelationships between Czech republic and
Flandern was signed. Van den Brande considers the cooperation with Czech
republic as most important compare to the coope Minister. Dagmar
Buresova, the Chairman of Czech Parliament is the member of OH too. Many
people from disent are members of the party but the party can't be
called as disident party.
The radical economical reform is pointed out in the programme. The
original economical plan is the basis that should be adopted to changing
situation. The state has to interfer economy minimally but can't avoid
certain responsibility in the period of transfer. The idea of maximal
decentralization is promoted in the state administration. The principle
of self-administration is prefered.
The coalition partners after election will be other parties of
former Civic Forum -ODS and ODA. The support of OH is changing from
4-7%.


Slovak National Party {SNS}

Slovak National Party was founded in the beginning of 1990. The
large support of people is seen in the Federal Parliment and Slovak
Parliament. The chairman of SNS is Jozef Prokes.
SNS is national oriented party fighting for Slovak interests. It
promotes the independent Slovak state. That's why it did not participate
in the negotiations on the Czech-Slovak President election . The party
criticise the economic reform and lustrace law.
SNS cooperates closely with Slovak "Matice"- the cultural, national
organization with big influence. Surveys shows the support between
9-11% that means SNS is the third most supported party in Slovakia.


CULTURAL SERVICE

Museum in Naarden

Jozef Miklosko, the vice-chairman of Czechoslovak government,
participated in the celebration of 400th anniversary of Jan Amos
Komensky in Netherlands on May 16. The museum of Jan Amos Komensky was
opened.


WEATHER


The summer is comming to Czechoslovakia. Last suterday the highest
temperature was more then 28 Celsia. However, sunday was getting
coulder. Now the day top temperature is about 18-21 C. The weekend
should be again hot.
