C A R O L I N A No 30.1, Monday, June 8, 1992.

Election has finished - what else ?

On June 6, 2 p.m., the second free elections in Czechoslovakia
finished. It was predicted these election would show especially two
main matters. Whether to continue with the economic reform and whether
to stay in a common state of Czechs and Slovaks. The votes were divided
like this:

(In per cents, chairs in brackets)

Czech republic

House of House of Czech National
Representatives Nations Council

ODS (Civic Democratic Party) 33.9 (20) 33.43 (19) 29.73 (17)

CSSD (Social Democrats) 7.67 (9) 6.8 (11) 6.53 (9)

LB (Communists) 14.27 (12) 14.48 (13) 14.05 (11)

LSU (Liberal-Social Union) 5.84 (7) 6.06 (5) 6.52 (8)

ODA (Civic Democratic Aliance) 4.98 (6) 4.08 (5) 5.93 (6)

SPR-RSC (Republican Party) 6.48 (4) 6.37 (4) 5.98 (4)

SMS (Moravian National Party) 4.23 (4) 4.90 (5) 5.87 (6)

KDU (Christian Democratic 5.98 (6) 6.08 (6) 6.28 (8)
Union)

Slovak Republic

House of House of Slovak National
Representatives Nations Council

HZDS (Movement for Demo- 33.53 (27) 33.85 (28) 37.26 (28)
cratic Slovakia)

SDL (Left-wing Democratic 14.44 (13) 14.04 (11) 14.70 (13)
Party)

KDH (Christian Democratic 8.96 (9) 8.81 (8) 8.88 (9)
Movement)

SDS (Social Democrats) 4.86 (6) 6.09 (5) 4.0 (5)

SNS (Slovak National Party) 9.39 (9) 9.35 (12) 7.93 (12)

M-E-M (Coalition of Hungarian 7.37 (4) 7.39 (5) 7.42 (4)
parties)

The situation is quite complicated. While in Bohemia, the right
wing oriented ODS won, in Slovakia the situation is absolutely
different. The only right wing party there is KDH. Creating the federal
coalition will be very difficult, especially if HZDS does not give up
its nationalist demands.
After the elections issues were announced, President Vaclav Havel
asked Vaclav Klaus, the chairman of ODS, to create the new federal
government.
Vladimir Meciar, chairman of HZDS, the most succesful party in
Slovakia, said that the chances of Vaclav Havel for his re-election are
minimal.
Petr Pithart, former Czech premier and member of unsuccesful Civic
Movement said that in Central Europe disidents are returning back from
the governments. Jiri Dientsbier , former minister of foreign affairs,
member of the same movement said, that after the elections, in
parliaments there will be a serious lack of central parties. People
will be surprised, he said, how serious changes in all governments they
caused by their choice.
